I want your midnights
by ananabzin

Summary

Kara becomes a mess around her roommate. Stammer, stumble, be totally stupid, everything
that could go wrong definitely will because she's in love with none other than Lena fucking
Luthor, who could blame her?

However, a moment of vulnerability can change things a little (or not).

Notes

If you find any mistake please tell me, I hadn't my usual helper to translate this one.

There's a depiction of a panic attack on the second scene, it isn't graphic, but still be careful
reading.

I hope you enjoy it <3

When I'm not dreaming about you

The bedroom door slams as Kara leans against it, sighing loudly. That was probably her least
subtle – but not more shameful – attempt to hide a gay panic and leave with some dignity.
But let's be fair, who wouldn't be constantly panicking when their roommate is Lena fucking
Luthor? That woman is flawless at 7am while Kara is still struggling to keep her eyes open,
it's almost supernatural.

Kara lets herself down on the bed and sends a "SOS I NEED YOU NOW" text to her sister,
asking Rao not to delay her reply. In the silence of her own thoughts the blonde girl could
hear the sound of the TV coming from the living room, Lena might be there yet, that magical
green eyes focused on the screen as she's thinking Kara has just two communicating neurons.
The thought makes her blush even more with embarrassment, at this point she's sure that
could throw herself out of the nearest window if it meant never having to see Luthor again.

Luckily for her – or not –the cell phone rings before she decides to start her plan.

"Are you fine? I'll be there in 15." Alex says in a hurry as she answered the call.

"Wait, what's going on?"

"What do you mean with 'what's going on'?" The oldest talks indignantly. "I'm the one who
should be asking this, you just sent me a SOS message."

"Oh, yeah, about that..."

"If you tell me it was a false alarm because of something totally stupid I'm going to block you
right now."

"Alex! I swear it wasn't stupid, it was Lena." The blonde whimpered.

"Again, Kara?"

"I know, but this time was different."

"That's what you always say before tell me the gayest thing ever."

"Please Alex, I need to talk to someone or I will go crazy." Kara could hear her sister sighing
on the other end of the line.

"Fine, tell me what happened."

"Lena was watching a series in the living room when I came home today and, I swear, she
was so beautiful. Her hair down kind curly, the glasses that she only wears at home, loose
sweater. She looked so comfortable and relaxed, she was not even using makeup, she is..."

"I already understood that she's the most beautiful woman you've ever seen, continue the
story."
"She invited me to watch with her and I obviously accepted, but as I sat on the couch she just
got closer and put her head on my shoulder!"

"Let me guess, you panicked and ran away?" Kara was sure her sister was rolling her eyes
saying that.

"Of course not, I'm better than this. I despaired internally, but she kept talking about the
series, asking me about my classes, if I was good and I couldn't build one single sentence."
Her attempts were nothing more than shutter and mumbles flashed before her eyes. "At some
point I just couldn't take it anymore and ran away without giving an explanation. She might
think I'm an idiot."

"So I was right, you panicked and ran." Alex said confidently, she always seemed to be
having fun with her sister's romantic catastrophes.

"Yeah, congratulations. Now, can you help me here?"

"Kara, I can only tell you what I've said to you every time: talk to her. In my opinion Lena is
clearly flirting and you are the only one who doesn't see it."

"I can't suddenly declare myself to her. We live together, how will I meet her every morning
if she rejects me?"

"She won't. Lena looks at you as if you were her dinner, which is actually very uncomfortable
for me."

"Of course not!" The blonde exclaimed and her voice turned to a high-pitch. "Where did it
come from?"

"She literally said her type is blondes with glasses. There's no way you will be rejected."

"I'm sure she thinks I'm dumb. I always become a mess in front of Lena, I can't think straight
or act like a normal person, she'll never see me as nothing more than a funny friend."

"Kara, you're amazing, beautiful, smart and anyone would be lucky to be with you. I'm sure
Lena also see that." Alex used a softer and comforting tone, one of those reserved for her
sister. "Now, would you excuse me to get back to my own love life?"

"I interrupted your night with Sam, didn't I?" She questioned feeling guilty.

"Yes, I kind of left her alone in my room when I got your text."

"Sorry, next time I'll try to make it clearer when it's a Lena kind of emergency."

"I'd really appreciate it" Alex said laughing and Kara could hear a glimpse of Sam's voice.
"Bye, just call me tonight if someone is dying." The oldest girl hung up before Kara could
answer, though too late to avoid hearing Sam saying things that she would rather forget they
were directed for her sister.
Back to the silence of her room she noticed that no sound was coming from the living room.
It was after 11pm and, judging by Lena's heartbeat, she was sleeping – yes, Kara had
memorized and listened to her roommate's heartbeat more often than she could be proud to
admit. Lying in her bed she reviewed the last week's interactions with the girl next door.
Whenever they met she felt like the awkward pre-teen who she was when had just arrived on
Earth, before learning English and the culture of a new planet. Now she's an adult about to
graduate with a degree in journalism, how in Rao's name she couldn't make a single sentence
in front of a beautiful woman? She should fix it, Alex might be right, what could get worse
than having to find a new place to live? Was with this thought and the rhythmic sounds that
she focused on every night she fell asleep.

[...]

Something was wrong. Kara didn't know why she woke up in the middle of the night, but
something was telling her that she needed to be awake.

Looking at her cell phone on the bedside table she realized that it was 3am, she still had a
long time to sleep before need to get up. She analyzed the room, but everything seemed to be
in their place, no sign of what interrupted her sleep. Until a sound of an erratic heartbeat hit
her. Lena. Definitely something was wrong with Lena.

Without think for a second time, Kara got up and crossed the room to the door on the other
side of the hallway. She had the foresight to knock, but all she could hear was panting breath
and sobs. Oh Rao, she was crying?

"Lena?" Nothing came back. "Lena, can I come in?"

Becoming even more nervous, Kara opened the door and came in without even being
allowed. Luthor was sitting against the headboard of the bed, her knees close to her chest
hiding her face. The scene broke her heart in a way different than everything she had already
felt.

Walking slowly she sat on the edge of the bed keeping some distance between them, afraid of
invading her friend's space and only make the situation worse.

"Lena, what's the problem?" Kara kept her voice low and soft, so much so she was afraid that
the other woman didn't hear what she said.

The smaller girl raised her head, wide green eyes met blue ones in an instant. "Kara?"

"Hi" she said with a nervous laugh. "Are you okay?"

She didn't respond verbally, actually it was the opposite, she closed her eyes tight and the
blonde noticed her fists clenching until her knuckles got white. Kara knew how to recognize
a panic attack when she saw one, she had her own experience with them some years ago and,
even if it wasn't the case, Lena's breathing seeming to oscillate between being stuck in her
lungs and hyperventilating was a good enough sign.
"Lena, look at me." Nothing. Danvers put her hand on another's knee and felt her tremble,
making her move away, even though the brunette opened her eyes and faced her again. "I
need you to pay attention to me, okay?" A quick nod. "Take a deep breath with me. Just focus
on keeping up with me, okay?"

Kara took a few deep and slow breaths as Alex used to do with her, saying words of
encouragement every time that Lena looked to start being lost in her head. After several
minutes the brunette found a stable rhythm, but she still seemed very anxious.

"You're doing well. Is there anything I can do to make you more comfortable?"

"I-I don't know... I just... Kara, I'm s-sorry..."

"Hey, it's okay. Remember, deep breaths." The blonde gave her some more time to try
recovering, but it didn't seem to be working very well, so she decided to take a new plan of
action. "Lena, look around you and tell me what you see."

Luthor scanned the room with her eyes in a frenectly way, as if she expected that someone
would jump from the shadows and attack them.

"It's j-just my room." She replied with a thin voice

"Well, tell me what's on your left."

"M-my desk with the notebook a-and..."

"What else are you seeing, Lee?" Kara's voice was as strong and assured as never sounded
around her roommate.

"Books and a c-chair. T-there's a picture on the wall too."

"Perfect. Now, what's in front of you?" Lena's eyes ran back to Danvers, but just as quickly
they ran to a spot on her back.

"The dresser, with perfumes and makeup. And the mirror above it."

"Anything else?"

Kara saw Lena's attention slowly returning to her. Her breathing was much steadier now, but
she still let out a deep sigh when their eyes met.

"You. Hair down, no glasses and smiling." The smallest of smiles showed on Luthor's face.
"T-shirt and jeans?"

"Hm, I kind of fell asleep like that." The blonde scratched the back of her head, a bit
embarrassed as she remembered the moments just before she fell asleep.

"I would recommend pajamas." Lena dried the last tears that escaped and her smile had
grown a little, still enough to make a weight left Kara's chest.
"Are you feeling better?"

"Yes, a little bit. Sorry for waking you up."

"Don't worry, I was already awake... hm, exercising?" The blonde lied shamelessly. Where
had the confidence of minutes ago gone?

"Really?" She frowned when she saw the time on her cell phone somewhere near her pillow.
"It's 4 am."

"Go an extra mile, right?" She said with a clumsy chuckle.

"That's what my mother would say." A yawn sounded at the end of her sentence. "Anyway,
thank you."

"You don't need to thank me. Is there anything else I can do? Maybe bring water or I can
make some tea? Or, if you want..."

"I'm fine, Kara. Sleep always makes me feel better after... You know, this." Lena makes a
vague gesture with her hand as if the panic attack were an inconvenient object thrown in the
corner of the room.

"So I'll let you rest, but if you change your mind just call me."

"Thank you, you're amazing."

As if the words weren't enough, the smile that Luthor gave at the end made Kara's heart skip
a beat, her legs trip over themselves and she almost fell halfway to the door. "You are
amazing, I mean, thank you. I'll be here if you need me, not here in your room because that
would be weird, I'll be in mine, but you can call me and I think I already said that. Sorry, I'm
just leaving and leaving you alone. Bye."

"Good night, Kara." Lena said laughing, a laugh too cute for Kara's own good.

"Goodnight." She shouted from the other side of the hallway.

[...]

The annoying sound of the alarm woke Kara up the next morning. She moaned loudly and
turned off the noise, how she hated morning classes. She got up, still half asleep and crossed
the hall, she really needed coffee to be able to do anything after the long night she had.

Before arriving in the kitchen, she was greeted by an unusual smell for a weekday. She was
used to the smell of coffee that Lena left for her every morning before leaving for classes, but
today there was something else that made Kara's stomach growl. Getting in the room she saw
a scene that immediately woke her up, Lena wearing jeans and a white shirt that seemed to be
tailored, preparing a lot of pancakes that looked delicious.

"Good morning." The blonde said a little confused at the door of the room.
"Good morning, you woke up on time." Luthor placed the last pancake on the plate and
brought it to the counter where they ate meals along with a steaming mug of coffee. "I made
breakfast to thank you for last night."

"You do not need..."

"I already know what you're going to say." Lena interrupted her by stopping right in front of
her and placing her hands on her shoulders. "I wanted to do something to show how grateful I
am for having you with me. Please, go eat and enjoy, it's all yours." Then, just like that,
without any warning, Lena leaned over and kissed her cheek very close to her lips. Needless
to say, Kara almost fainted in her roommate's arms, it was a miracle she could still mutter a
"thanks"

"I have to hurry or I'm going to be late for my first class. See you tonight."

Kara only registered the door to the room slamming and then realized that she was staring at
a fixed point in front of her where Lena had been just before and, believe it or not, was
floating a few inches off the ground. Rao, she was really fucked up.
2am, who do you love?
Chapter Notes

Welcome to the final chapter chapter of "Kara Danvers being dumb and oblivious but
Lena Luthor thinks it's cute".

I hope I made the wait worth :)

It's curious how an ordinary day can become terrible in a short time. Leaving home that
morning Kara wasn't ready for anything that came next, she didn't plan to deal with her
arrogant cousin and for sure she didn't want to see Jack too close to Lena – who looked
especially pretty when she left the apartment and perhaps had made her choke with her
coffee.

Kara might have locked herself in her room as soon as she arrived home, she wouldn't be
bothered there for the rest of the night, but she was so tired that she decided to take a break
on the couch in the living room. Her plan was simple: text Alex cursing Kal – and Jack, if she
is still angry enough –, avoid meeting her roommate as much as possible and go to bed two
hours earlier than normal. Well, the only mistake in her plan was sitting on that couch.

She was too distracted with her own thoughts to listen to the keys in the lock and have the
chance to run away, so the first thing her brain registered was the door being slammed,
making her jump in fright.

"I hate men!" Lena punctuated each word and dropped her purse on the ground giving an
extra touch of drama. "They are so dumb and annoying and..." A frustrated grunt was the
final complement.

Kara was speechless, which was common when Lena was involved, but she had never seen
the brunette so angry and seeing her walking like that toward her was messing with her
logical thought.

"Why do they have to be so self-centered?" Luthor said as she fell on the couch. Seeing that
the blonde wasn't responding, Lena stopped for a moment and took a deep breath to calm
herself. "Sorry, I had a shit day."

"No problem, mine wasn't much better."

"Really? What happened?" Lena turned to face her now, interest and concern written all over
her face.

Kara didn't think "I was jealous of you hugging a guy" or "My stupid cousin thinks he knows
more about our dead planet than I do" were good answers, so she preferred to keep it short.
"Men." Lena nodded strongly as if that was the best explanation possible.

"Finally someone who understands me! I tried talking to Jack about this earlier and, you
know, he's great but he's still a man." Kara shifted uncomfortably, but the other didn't seem to
notice. "You know what we should do? Order pizza and finish the ice cream in the freezer
while we talk about our shitty days. What do you think?"

Lena was smiling excitedly and it wasn't very often that Kara saw her like that, in fact, she
could count on one hand how many times she had seen her relaxed enough to demonstrate
anything more intense than polite smiles. So, does anyone think Kara even thought about
refusing? Yeah, she was wanting to ignore Lena until the next day just minutes before, but
that no longer matters.

After receiving the agreement, Luthor picked up her cell phone even more excitedly. "I'm
going to order two pizzas for us and take a quick shower before they arrive, okay?"

The blonde muttered "great" and watched her roommate get up and disappear into the
hallway. Maybe her night just took a surprising turn.

[...]

"Do you wanna start?" Lena asked before taking a bite of her slice of pizza.

They were sharing the couch again, Luthor's leg pressed against hers from time to time as
they were sitting a little more closer than strictly necessary. The brunette came out of the
bathroom just as the delivery man rang the doorbell, her hair was still wet, wearing a
university sweater and leggings that held Kara's attention for longer than she could admit.
The coffee table in front of the two of them was filled with pizza, ice cream and cans of soda.

"You can go ahead, I can wait."

"Okay, first of all, do you know how many students there are in the final year of engineering
physics?" The blonde shrugged. "37 men and, attention now, 3 women."

"Wow, that's kind of scary."

"And it's not even the worst part. We're constantly having to prove that we deserve to be there
even after eight semesters. They still treat us like mascots and make bets on who will be the
next to drop out, it's ridiculous."

"I thought that kind of behavior wouldn't be a thing anymore after high school."

"That's what I expected too, but seem it's impossible for us to be taken seriously." Lena's
eyebrows were furrowed and her face was red with anger. "It's bad enough that I'm always in
Lex's shadow, the last thing I need is idiots making jokes about my work."

"Who is Lex?"

"Lex Luthor? Don't you know my brother?" Lena shot back immediately, looking confused as
much as Kara felt embarrassed.
"S-should I?"

"Yeah. I mean, he's kind of famous."

It's not like the blonde doesn't know anything about Luthor's family, but she's also not the
type to stalk them before Lena feels comfortable telling her about them. She was aware that
they owned a million-dollar technology company, but nothing deeper than that.

"Sorry, it's not really my thing."

"Don't be, I was just surprised as everyone here seems to be a fan of him, it's actually nice
that you're an exception."

"Is my ignorance in the technology world good?" Lena grimmed and agreed, making Kara
smile too. "And what did he do to have fans?"

"He's been the CEO of Luthorcorp since our mother gave the position to him a few years
ago."

"He runs the family business and people think that's special?" The brunette looked at her
almost in disbelief, only then Danvers noticed that there was too much mockery in her tone to
sound polite. "I didn't mean to say your company isn't important or anything, it is! Like, I
don't know anything about it, but it must be really cool. It's just, you know, it doesn't take
much effort to inherit something. I also don't mean to say that you don't put..."

Lena burst into laughter that made her lean forward and abandon the half-eaten piece of
pizza, this was very effective in shutting the blonde up.

"I probably shouldn't think it's so funny someone pointing out my family's nepotism." She
said, still catching her breath.

"Aren't you offended?"

"Kara, of course not. I love my brother, but I'm aware that he's an idiot with a big ego. It's
nice to find someone who doesn't put him on a pedestal sometimes."

"Oh, that I understand very well." Her smile fell slightly and noticing this, just like before,
Lena turned her body towards Kara ensuring that all her attention was on her friend.

"Do you want to talk about your shitty day now?" The brunette gave him a friendly smile.

Kara took a sip from her can to get some time before answering. Sometimes it was really
hard to hide her past, for obvious reasons it wasn't the simplest task in the world to vent to a
friend when half the story had to be changed to avoid details about Krypton and superpowers.
That's why she usually only talked to Alex, but in front of those green eyes full of interest she
could never say no.

"It's kind of a family problem."

"Well, as you had just seen, I have some experience on the subject. Feel free if you want to
share anything." The playful tone helped Kara return to her previous relaxed state and she
was grateful for it.

"I had an argument with my cousin today. He is my only biological relative and also the most
inconvenient."

"Are you adopted too?"

"What do you mean with 'too'?"

"I was adopted by Luthor's when I was 4." Kara noticed how her roommate's relaxation failed
and made a mental note about it.

"I did not know that."

"It's not information they're proud enough to share. Anyway, let's not take the focus away
from you. Keep talking about the discussion."

"He treats me like I'm still a child, he acts like he knows more about our family than I do,
even though he's not even..." The blonde interrupted herself because technically on Earth Kal
was actually older than her and realizing this somehow irritated her even more. "Sometimes I
just think I don't really like who he becomes."

"And that's okay, you don't have to like anyone who doesn't treat you with the respect you
deserve."

"He's the only family I have left." Kara felt the weight of loneliness of having lost everything
she knew, she began to think that it wasn't a good idea to talk about this with a human.

"That's not true. You have a great older sister, and from what I've heard, your adoptive
mother is amazing too." Even though it wasn't Lena's intention, the words made a seed of
guilt grow in Kara's chest. "And I'm sure you know that very well because I see how much
you love them every time you talk about them."

"I don't mean to say they're not my family, but I don't have much that reminds me of who I
was before becoming a Danvers, and I hate that Clark is so condescending. He was adopted
when he was a baby, all the lessons and culture I've lived with my parents are just folklore to
him and he still acts as if I'm the one who needs to be reminded of our family values."

She felt the same rage as hours before while talking to her cousin on the phone. Without her
being able to control herself, the can in her hand was reduced to nothing more than twisted
metal due to the strong grip that she held it, soda splashed on Lena and she herself was
slightly soaked. They both stared at each other in shock for some time before the brunette ran
towards the kitchen.

"S-sorry, I don't know how that happened. I'll clean it up in a second." Kara shut off too
quickly for anyone to understand more than a few words.

"Hey, it's okay, breathe." Lena said calmly as she returned with a roll of paper towels.
"I made you dirty and the couch is all wet."

"Don't worry, we can fix this."

Kara should have been helping Lena dry up the mess, but she was too mortified with
embarrassment to act. Disastrous thoughts about her roommate finding out about her super
strength filled her mind and, adding the anger of the past situations, she was starting to panic
a little.

Seeing her behavior, Lena stopped everything she was doing and sat down on the coffee table
to face Kara, very carefully took one of the blonde's hands in hers and drew comforting
circles with her thumb to get her attention. "Kara, don't worry, it was just an insignificant
accident."

"I'm sorry, I wasn't thinking straight."

"Has anyone ever told you that you apologize too much?" A light laugh followed her words.
"Besides the fact that you're surprisingly strong, what happened wasn't a big deal, it was just
a can."

Kara looked at Luthor's previously gray sweater that now had dark spots on it, guilt might
have been marked in her expression.

"Please don't make that face. I swear it's alright." Lena brought one of her hands to the
blonde's face to emphasize her words and... Wow, at that moment Kara felt much more than
butterflies in her stomach.

Blue eyes locked with green ones and that was all she could see, hands together and the
affection on her face dominated her other senses. The world could have exploded around
them and Kara wouldn't have noticed, not while Lena stayed so close and staring at her in a
way she would never have enough words to describe.

"Now that expression is better." The brunette had a slight smile that was impossible not to
mirror. "Come here, I hate seeing you upset like that." Lena pulled her into a hug that was a
little awkward due to the position they were in, but it was still the best Kara had ever got.

"Now I'm kind of jealous of Jack for getting hugs like that all the time." She said before
thinking about the sentence her mouth was formulating.

"What do you mean? Why specifically Jack?"

"I don't know, I just figured your boyfriend gets a lot of hugs." Suddenly Lena pulled away
and stared at her in pure astonishment.

"My what?!"

"Your boyfriend?" Now Kara was as confused as the woman in front of her and somewhat
disappointed at losing physical contact so fast.

"Where did that come from?"

"I might have seen you guys hugging on campus today."

"Because he's my best friend, not my boyfriend. Kara, I'm obviously a lesbian."

"Oh, that's...I didn't...you never told me that."

"I've been flirting with you for months! How could you think I'm with Jack?"

"Wait, are you flirting with me?" Lena groaned in frustration and got up, for a second Kara
was afraid that she'd just leave, but she just stood in front of her.

"I literally told you I had a crush on blondes from the first day I came to live here, I gave you
flowers on your birthday, I left notes every day before I went out in the morning and you
thought this was all platonic?"

"Saying like that, things make a lot of more sense." They were both red as tomatoes, Danvers
with embarrassment and Lena, well, it was hard to tell. "I'm sorry, I don't..."

"Damn Kara, just shut up."

That was all the warning Kara got before Lena leaned over her for a kiss. It took the blonde a
second longer for her brain to process that Lena Luthor was kissing her and that she should
reciprocate, but when it happened it seemed like her entire purpose in life was to end up in
that moment. Luthor's hands were on her face and neck, while hers held the brunette's waist,
everything fit perfectly. When they separated, they were both out of breath.

"Was I clear enough to you?" Luthor asked in a provocative tone.

"Maybe I need a little more demonstration."

"I like this new confident side." She said, already on her way to another kiss.

Kara's night had definitely gone better than expected.
