The Computation of % Reduction of Line Losses due to

Compensation of VAR Loading

Let us assume an Apparent Load being fed by a 11 KV System is V x I1

10 MVA --------------(A1)

Let us assume that the Power Factor of the loaded system is 0.85 (lag)

Therefore, the Active load requirement of the system is 0.85 x 10 =

8.5 MW

Now, let us assume that the Power Factor has been improved by
installing proper rated capacitor bank to 0.95 (lag)

The Active load of the system is fixed at 8.5 MW.

Therefore, the Apparent load requirement of the system is

(KW/p.f.)= KVA= V x I2

8.5/ 0.95= 8.95 MVA--------(A2)

∴ 𝑪𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒄𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝑹𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆 = (𝟏𝟎 − 𝟖. 𝟗𝟓)𝑴𝑽𝑨 = 𝟏. 𝟎𝟓 𝑴𝑽𝑨

We assume for the simplicity of Calculation that the voltage before

and after compensation is constant (though actually does improve)

The % decrease in Line Loss= (I1)2 - (I2)2 x 100

(I1)2
Dividing the Numerator and denominator by V 2 we get
(VxI1)2 - (VxI2)2 x 100
(VxI1)2
= (A1)2 - (A2)2 x 100
(A1)2
= 1- (A2)2 x 100
(A1)2
Substituting the values of A1 & A2 we get:
% Reduction In loss= 19.89%
Actual reduction of loss is more as voltage will increase in turn
reducing the current to further extent. Actual result can be obtained
by Load Flow Analysis.
