The eighth Covid case of the
city exposed 81 persons to the
virus, as per the contact trac-
ing report. These persons
belong to Sectors 30-B, 51, 55,
and 44 in the city while five of
them belong to Mullanpur in
Punjab. What’s worrisome is
that the 22-year-old youth had
gone to his workplace, the
scooter market in Sector 38,
between March 11 and 22.
There is no count of people
who had a contact with him.
Making an appeal to the city
residents, an MC official said,
“Those who had gone to the
patient’s shop in Sector 38
may quarantine themselves.
It is very difficult to trace
unknown persons who came
in contact with him. The boy
was moving around in the city
since his return from Dubai.
This is a big worry.”
Around five persons from
Mullanpur had come in contact
with the patient. Their details
have been shared with the sur-
veillance unit of Punjab.

After three days of confusion,
city residents today heaved a
sigh of relief as the UT
Administration allowed open-
ing of grocery shops from 10
am to 6 pm.
It was the fourth experiment
the UT Administration did in
less than a week for making
beleaguered residents get
essentials such as milk, veg-
etables, fruits and medicines.
From starting selling vegeta-
bles and fruits at community
centres to calling up grocery
stores for home delivery, all
efforts came a cropper for the
ill-prepared Administration.

Though the initial reaction
to the UT move of opening
shops drew criticism, most
people found it convenient as
all other measures to bring
respite to residents had failed
over the last few days.
Earlier, there was a percep-
tion that the UT move will lead
to overcrowding in markets
and defeat the purpose of
social distancing. However,
the authorities had marked
circles at a distance for people
to queue up outside shops at
several markets. Customers
too were found observing the
distance. Vehicles were not
permitted in markets, which
further helped preventing
overcrowding.
“There was no rush at the
Sector 22, 23 and 24 mar-
kets I visited. We have told
people to buy only accord-
ing to their need and not to
stock consumables,” said
Rakesh Kanojia, president
of Social Welfare Associa-
tion in Sector 24.

The Virology Department of
the PGI has tested 328 sam-
ples for Covid, out of which 38
have tested positive. A total of
26 positive cases are from
Punjab, eight from Chandi-
garh and one from Haryana.
Four city residents have test-
ed negative for the virus today.
Among them is a 38-year-old
woman, who was a contact of
man, a 54-year-old woman and
others who tested negative.
They had come in contact with
the city’s second positive case.
A 23-year-old youth from Sec-
tor 29-B, who is a contact of the
eighth positive case of Chandi-
garh, is admitted to the isola-
tion ward of the GMCH-32. He
has been sampled for Covid-19.
A five-month-old girl, a resi-
dent of Zirakpur with travel
history of Australia, was
admitted to the PGIMER
today and has tested negative
for nCoV.
With a capacity of 2,200 beds,
over 800 patients are still
admitted in PGI. Prof Jagat
Ram, Director, PGI, said, “The
patients are being provided
logistics and ambulance to
take them to their homes.
Over 50 patients are being dis-
charged daily.”

High Court today gave the
Chandigarh Administration
and the District Magistrate

petition filed in public interest
questioning the decision to
open shops across the city for
eight hours from 10 am.
Among other things, the peti-
tioner contended the order
allowed 1.5 lakh people to step
out on the pretext of procuring
essential commodities, facili-
tating the spread of Covid-19.

285 inmates to be released from Burail Jail

As many as 285 inmates of
Burail Jail have been given the
benefit of parole or interim bail
to decongest the prison in view
of Covid-19 threat.
A total of 130 convicts have
been ordered to be released on
parole. Of the total, the parole of
14 convicts has been extended.
At least 95 undertrials have
been granted interim bail.

Administrator VP Singh Bad-
nore said after the imposition
of curfew, the Administration
had put in massive efforts to
maintain the supply chain of
essential items, including milk,
vegetables, groceries, medi-
cines, etc, but it achieved limit-
ed success.
He stated that after the
appeal of the Prime Minister
for lockdown, a majority of
states/UTs in the country had
gone for the lockdown option
during which the establish-
ments for essential items have
been kept open. Only in
Chandigarh and Punjab, a
decision was taken to impose
total curfew which also result-
ed in the closure of all estab-
lishments including that of
essential Items.
Badnore said a large number
of complaints were received
about the unavailability of
essential items, their quality,
high prices, short duration of
stay of mobile vendors, etc.
There were also complaints
from periphery areas and vil-
lages about the people going
without food due to absence of
rations and medicines.
He consulted the senior offi-
cials of the Administration,
including medical experts,
who stated that if the same
social distancing is being
observed by people near the
CTU buses, then the same can
be ensured at the shops in
their respective markets. It
was felt that it would be easier
to ensure and regulate social
distancing in three or four
shops that would be opened in
respective sector markets
which are more spread out.
The DGP also stated that
nowhere in the country any
curfew could be sustained for
more than three days without
giving relaxations.

More than 55,600 LPG gas
cylinders have been supplied
to people in the district
through 31 gas agencies dur-
ing the curfew imposed owing

three members of a family
from committing suicide.
As per the information, a
woman, along with her hus-
band and a kid aged four, was
about to commit suicide
because of their inability to

needed for the treatment of

The poor said due to high

19 shutdown.
Labourers of the unorgan-
ised sector have been facing
crisis. The operation at the
brick kilns have already been
shut due to the Covid-19.
Consequently, their wages
have been reduced to half.
