14 LEARNER - CENTERED PRINCIPLES

Activity:

1. Explain the importance of discussion of the lessons in class.

Discussion of the lessons in class is important because it allows classroom interaction. In this
way of teaching, students are being involved and they become focus on the topic. If there is an
interaction, the students can learn from one another based on their experiences and prior
knowledge. It can help a student to gradually process information and this is much better than
just receiving it. Discussion in class also improves student’s communication skills as they
express their thoughts during class. This can also exercise the listening skills of the learner as
they involved with the conversation.

Discussion of the lesson in class helps to fix arguments from differing viewpoints. Every
student has different viewpoints and interpretation of the topic. Discussion can help to figure out
what is the much better idea and to have new perspective about the lessons. Therefore,
discussion of the topic is really important for the class to reach a common goal.

2. What learner- centered principle is applied when there is discussion in the teaching
– learning process?

In my own perspective, the learner- centered principle applied when there is discussion in the
teaching – learning process is nature of the learning process. Nature of the learning process deals
with an intentional process of constructing meaning from information and experience. For
example, the teacher is discussing and having an interaction with the students by giving a topic
and asking the students if what their opinions are. This is when the information (which is details
by the book) and experiences (opinion of students) will collaborate to create an educative
conversation.

Discussion also applied with the different learner- centered principles but in my own point of
view, nature of the learning process have more significance with the discussion in the teaching –
learning process since sharing student’s own thoughts and beliefs are present during discussion
and also one of the types of nature of the learning process.
