INTRODUCTION

The configuration is a crucial part of a computer system and most of these

settings are configured during the system’s first boot up. It plays an important role that
affects the function and performance of your computer; from the choice of hardware,
software, and firmware, to the architecture itself. Aside from that, Local Area Network
& Wide Area Network are configured based on clients’ needs that will help their
businesses and agencies work efficiently.

In this module, you will be able to identify the process of configuring the client
device system setting which includes setting time and date, setting up computer name,
and installing network driver. You will also be able to configure Local Area Network
(LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) which include the presentation of the materials
and equipment needed to configure, and the different processes in configuration and
setting up these networks.

Through these configurations, you can specify settings that are needed and
required for the computer to function and perform better. You will also understand how
to build these networks, how to execute these steps, and recognize their importance.

ABSTRACTION

The configuration is an important process that must be performed manually or

automatically. The life of the device and its performance oftentimes depend on its
configurations where speed and stability become factors to understand its importance.
There are hardware and software with minimum configuration to limit its performance
and should be upgraded to access new configuration that will bring about the new level
of performance.

For software configuration, it can be accessed through the application’s

settings; it could be by default or manually configured by the user. The information will
be an aid in the system’s optimal usage to prolong the life and the performance of your
device.

On the other hand, network configuration is also necessary to support the flow
of traffic within the network, its operations, and controls especially in sharing,
accessing, and storing data in a centralized location, and improve the network stability.
With proper configuration, the network will be stable regardless of the devices
connected to it.

I. CLIENT DEVICE SETTINGS

Client Device Settings is an avenue to specify and define the necessary settings
in your computer from its default settings. Every client device system is configured
based on the manufacturer’s instructions and the preferences of the end-user. In this
module, you will learn the steps on how to configure your client device manually.

These are the settings to be configured:

17
II. LOCAL AREA NETWORK

A local area network (LAN) is a collection of computers and computer

peripherals (disk storage devices, printers) linked inside a building or adjacent
buildings by high-speed data lines. LAN is a network that is designed to operate over
a small physical area such as an office, factory, or a group of buildings. It has a limited
area and does not cover a larger geographical area compared to WAN. LANs
developed as a means of interconnecting different electronic devices within an entity,
allowing local processing while also giving access to other network-connected
devices. LAN traffic is theoretically not limited to character transmission: some
architectures would allow voice and video signals to be transmitted. Up to a few
kilometers may be the total distance covered by a LAN.

1. PREPARE YOUR WORKSTATION

Your workstation should be spacious, clean, and dry. Prepare the needed tools
and equipment. Always apply the OHS policies and procedures and where PPE if
necessary.

2. DETERMINE THE NUMBER OF COMPUTERS

For you to identify the network hardware needed to build a network, you need
to consider the number of computers you want to be in the network.
a. If there are only four (4) or fewer computers, you may use a router only.
If you don’t have to connect it to the internet, you can use a switch.
b. If there are five (5) or more computers, you may use a switch and a
router.

3. DETERMINE YOUR NETWORK LAYOUT

You need to create a network layout for you to visualize the network itself. You
should also consider if you are installing a permanent network to determine the
network cable to be used based on your
network design. You can either use CAT5e
or CAT6, each has differences that will fit on
the network you are building. Every device
specifically the computers needs an
Ethernet cable that will be connected to a
router or switch. That will create a pathway
for your data to travel from one computer to
another.

4. PLUG THE ETHERNET CABLE

You need to plug one end of your Ethernet cable to the computer Ethernet port
and the other end to any open LAN port on either your router or switch. Make sure that
you are using an Ethernet cable and not a telephone cable.

18
5. RESET THE ROUTER
If all the devices are connected using the Ethernet cable, you need now to reset
the router. In resetting your router, click and hold the small button at the back of the
router until all the lights in the router will illuminate. It will probably take about 5-10
seconds before the lights will illuminate and the router will be restarted.

6. CONFIGURE YOUR ROUTER

After resetting, you can now configure your router.
a. Look for the default IP Address of the router.
You can search the default IP address of the
router using cmd. Go to the start button and type
“cmd” or “command prompt”. Type “ipconfig”
and look for the default gateway under the
wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network
Connection.

b. Open any browser and type the default IP

Address in the address bar so that you can
access the router’s setting.

c. The first thing that you will see after entering

the router’s IP address is its login. You have to
provide the username and password of the
router. The default username and password is
“admin”. You can also look for the router’s
manual if “admin” is incorrect. After the login, the
router’s user interface will appear and you can
now configure your router.
d. Navigate to the Network tab to change your
router’s default IP Address. After you change
the router’s IP Address, the router will reboot.
After restarting, your new IP Address will appear
in the address bar and you will be asked to
provide again the router’s username and
password.

19
e. The DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration
Protocol) server of your router will provide the
TCP/IP configuration for all the PCs in your
network. Go to the DHCP tab, click “Enable” and
define the starting and ending IP Addresses to
automatically provide the devices connected to
your router their IP addresses. For example,
your starting IP Address is 192.168.1.100 and
your ending IP Address is 192.168.1.199. When
you save this setting, the expected IP addresses of your devices when you check on
them should be in the range of 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.199. This is the easiest
way to establish a LAN connection for your network. If you wish to establish a
connection manually, you can disable the DHCP.

III. WIDE AREA NETWORK

Wide Area Network (WAN) is different from Local Area Network (LAN) but is
related to it. When a network spans over a large distance, a local area network cannot
be used which is why we need a wide area network (WAN). The communication
established using leased telephone lines, satellite links, and similar channels. WAN
circuits and leased lines are
provided by service providers.
WAN is cheaper and more
efficient to use the phone
network for the link. In other
words, a WAN is formed when
you connect multiple LANs that
are geographically far apart.

Big companies, schools, and even government agencies are using WAN to
carry out data and send it to the other network across different areas. With this,
businesses carry out daily functions regardless of location.

For example, a company that is expanding and has different offices in areas
that are geographically far should contact a service provider that is present in all areas
where their offices are located and see if what type of WAN services can be offered.
The company needs to pay the service
provider fees to connect remote sites.
The service provider will access your
area and will install the necessary
hardware and circuits needed to build a
WAN and they will provide a link for it.
WAN services providers include MPLS
network, telephone company, cable

20
company, and satellite service provider provides a link to interconnect remote sites to
send data from one office to the other. Without the WANs, LANs will be a series of
isolated networks because it can only cater to small geographical areas.

In a Local Area Network, you install a router to interconnect the different

broadcast domains which is also the device generating the data. These routers will
also connect geographically
separated LANs but they need
additional equipment like a
modem for the routers to be
connected to the service
provider's network and this
equipment will put the data on the
local loop.
Communications equipment used to
connect to the service provider’s
network that is located on the
customer’s premises is called
Customer premises equipment
(CPE). The customer can own the
CPE or can lease it from the service
provider. These CPEs will be used to connect to the service providers nearest
exchange through copper or fiber cable called a local loop.

After the data leaves the customer’s location, it arrives at the service provider’s
central office (CO). These are like a distribution center sending data to other COs
along the path to its final destination.
