NETWORK

● It is a group of computers connected to

one another for the purpose of sharing
data, hardware and other resources.

● The computers on a network may be linked through cables,

telephone lines, radio waves, satellites, or infrared light beams.
(Bluetooth share files through radio waves)

● An excellent example of a network is the Internet, which connects

millions of people all over the world.
Data transfer rate is a key issue in computer networks. The speed with
which data is moved from one place on a network to another
The generic term node or host refers to any device on a network
File server. A computer that stores and manages files for multiple users
on a network
Web server. A computer dedicated to responding to requests (from the
browser client) for web pages.
● Computer networks have opened up an entire frontier in the world
of computing called the client/server model

NETWORK TECHNOLOGIES
The most common types of network technologies:
1. Wireless- is a network that uses wireless distribution to interconnect
digital devices. To set up a wireless network, you need one wireless
network adapter, and one wireless access point router.
2. Ethernet To set up a Ethernet network, you need network adapter,
Ethernet hub or switch, Ethernet cables, and cross over cables.
3. Home PNA- or Home Phoneline Networking Alliance is a network that
uses phone lines to interconnect digital devices. To set up a Home PNA,
you need one Home PNA adapter for each computer on you network,
one Ethernet router, and standard telephone cables that can be
plugged into a phone jack for each computer on your network.
4. Powerline- is a network that uses power line to interconnect digital
devices. To set up a Powerline network, you need one Powerline
network adapter for each computer on your network one Ethernet
router if you are sharing an internet connection, and one electrical
wiring and outlet for each computer on you network.

CLASSIFICATION OF NETWORKS
Computer networks are classified by their various characteristics. One of
the most common types of classification is by area of coverage or size of a
network.
1. AREA OF COVERAGE:

⮚ Local Area Network (LAN). A network that connects a relatively

small number of machines in a relatively close geographical
area. Installing a LAN in an environment where several
computers are located is convenient, practical, and a cost-
effective means of sharing resources such as hardware files. A
LAN is usually owned and operated by individuals or
organization.

a. Personal Area Network – a network close to a person for

communication among different wireless IT devices like
laptop computers, mobile phones and printers. Wireless
Bluetooth, usually forms a wireless PAN.

b. Home Area Network-a network for residential use for

communication among different desktop computers, mobile
phones, and printers. There is usually a sharing of
broadband service through a Digital Subscriber Line or DSL
provider.

⮚ Campus Area Network. is a network that usually refers to a

school or university network. A CAN may be composed of
several LANs, usually used by big learning institutions that
covers several buildings and departments.
A CAN usually operated by the school owner or organization.

⮚ Metropolitan-area network (MAN). The communication

infrastructures that have been developed in and around large
cities

⮚ Wide-area network (WAN). A network that connects two or

more local-area networks over a potentially large geographic
distance. Often one particular node on a LAN is set up to serve
as a gateway to handle all communication going between that
LAN and other networks. Communication between networks is
called internetworking. The Internet, as we know it today, is
essentially the ultimate wide-area network, spanning the entire
globe.

Sharing of data can occur in two ways:

1. Wired connection such as fiber-optical cable & twisted pair

cable
2. Wireless connection such as Wi-Fi, radio communication, and
microwave transmission.
Applications of computer networks:
1. Resource Sharing- it means sharing hardware like printer and
software Adobe Photoshop among multiple users.
2. Information Sharing- a single information can be shared
among the users over the internet.
3. Communication- emails, chats, video calls, podcasts, electronic
funds transfer system and many others are examples of
communication.
4. Entertainment Industry- uses computer networks widely ex.
YouTube music downloads.
5. Access to Remote Databases- allow us to access the Remote
Database of the various applications by the end-users. Some
applications are Reservation for Hotels, Airplane Booking, Home
Banking.
6. Home applications- user-to-user communication, access to
remote instruction, electronic commerce, and entertainment,
managing bank accounts, transferring money to other banks,
paying bills electronically.
7. Business applications- without moving to the physical
location of the resource, all the data, plans, and tools can be
shared to any network user.
8. Mobile users- The rapidly growing sectors in computer
applications ex. notebook computers and PDAs (personal digital
assistants), new-age technology like smartwatches, wearable
devices & tablets.
9. Social media- a great example of a computer network
application. It helps people to share and receive information
related to all kinds of issues.

Vocabulary:
Downloading- the process of obtaining files from a server to a
workstation. (ex. download programs)
Uploading- obtaining files from a workstation to a server. (ex.
Attach a document and upload them to a certain server)
Bandwidth- the capacity of the network to transmit the amount of
data in bits per second(Bps).

E. Application

Which type of cable is commonly used to connect between a modem and a
laptop? Is it straight-through or cross-over? Why?

D. Abstraction

COPPER CABLE SPLICING AND TESTING

Ethernet cable color-coded wiring sequences exist as a cabling

industry standard. It allows cabling technician to predict how
Ethernet cable is terminated on both ends so they can follow other
technician’s work.
Ethernet cables are commonly used in computer networking. They
are used when we connect our router to the modem or when we
desire to share data and access to the internet via wired network.

ETHERNET CABLE COLORS AND ITS MEANING:

1. Gray Ethernet- standard Ethernet
connection found in residential and
commercial networks/jumpers.
2. Green Ethernet- used to classify a cross-
over connection, which are used to connect
two different computers/devices directly
together.
3. Yellow Ethernet- used for Power over internet connection/ wired
security camera.
4. Blue Ethernet- used for terminal server connections/denotes
network connectivity.
5. Black- used for equipment.
6. Red Ethernet- used for VoIP phone systems or other emergency
communications systems.

Two types of LAN cables:

1. Straight-through refers to cables that have the pin assignments
on each end of the cable. Pin 1 connector A goes to pin 1 connector
B., Pin 2 to Pin 2 until all colors are connected. This cable is most
commonly used to connect a host to client.

2. Crossover wired cables (commonly called crossover cables) are

very much like straight-through cables with the exception that
lines are crossed (they are at opposite positions on either end of the
cable).

Pin 1 on connector A goes to Pin 3 on connector B. Pin 2 in

connector A goes to Pin 6 in connector b.
Crossover cables are most commonly used t o connect two hosts
directly.
