Part 1 Social Problem

A social problem that currently exists is abortion. Abortion is the removal of

pregnancy tissue, fetus, and placenta from the uterus. Abortion rights are a
form of both gender and racial oppression. Abortion rights directly impact
women and within recent laws created an enormous impact on gender
equality. The Dobbs V Jackson women's health case was brought forth,
attempting to fight for women's rights to access abortion and body autonomy.
However, due to the current laws preventing abortions it oppresses women
from their right to the 14th amendment and takes away women's right to liberty
and equality. When abortion is accessible it increases the probability, a
women will finish college by 20% and have a professional occupation by 40%
(reproductive rights). These probabilities drastically increase for African
American women. In fact, the maternal death rate for black women is 4 times
as likely as a white woman. By taking away rights to access and have an
abortion you are directly oppressing all women and targeted racial groups.
Safety, equality, autonomy, and healthcare are all being oppressed through
the social problem of abortion.

Summarize the causal explanations of the problem according to each theory:
why it occurs?
Discuss what particular manifestations of the problem the theory focusses on?
Consider who is most affected by this problem and what/whose experiences
are fore fronted by this theoretical approach? What groups, experiences are
not considered by this theoretical approach?

Part 2 Identify Solutions
Identify responses to the problem informed by each theory at micro, mezzo
and macro level. Identify and briefly describe 3 types of interventions with
great potential to address the problem: at individual level (e.g. trauma
informed practice), at group/community level (e.g., support groups, community
development) and at macro-level (e.g.)social policy and/or social movement).

more detail and provide 3 persuasive arguments ( what are the most

address the problem. Present these arguments in class in a brief speech.

intervention would address the issue through education to understand the

treatment of women of color will change unless policies are in place to make
room for a new way of viewing the issue. This would give health providers a
better understanding of their patients as a whole and what accommodations
may be necessary to ensure the safety of a patient. This would not help the
issue of abortion, but it will help to put all women on the same level to fight
together. To bring equality for all women there needs to be equality for the
groups of women that are being harshly oppressed due to race.
