Duration: 1.15 Hrs. M.Marks:25
SECTION-A
Q1. Attempt any three questions. 3x5=15
a. Explain the general design procedure.
b. Classify different types of shafts.
c. What is the difference between keys and splines?
d. Explain the caulking and fullering.
e. Write advantages and disadvantages of screwed joints.
f. Differentiate between clutch and coupling.
g. What are the advantages of welded joints over riveted joints?
h. Discuss the comparison between designed and un-designed work.

SECTION-B
Q2. Attempt any one question. 1x10=10
i. A solid circular shaft is subjected to a bending moment of 3000 N-m and torque of 1000 N-m.
The shafts are made of 45 C8 steel having ultimate tensile stress of 700 MPa and ultimate shear
stress of 500 MPa. Assuming factor of safety as 6, determine the diameter of shafts.
ii. Design a knuckle joint to transmit 150 kN. The design stress may be taken as 60 MPa in tension,
45 MPa in shear and 130 MPa in compression.
