Importance of Literature
Literature is a collection of the written word of a particular culture, language or period in history. It is a
reflection of life. And it fuels the mind to think, imagine and create. Many literary works keep a strong connection
with people through stories and the message they carry. The readers associate themselves with the emotions
portrayed and often become one with the character and the story too.
Great literary works like the Bible, Quran and Indian epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata, provide
society with guiding principle of life. The epics of Homer, Plato, Horace and Virgil are the beacons of literature.
Shakespeare’s Sonnets and poetry by Sidney, Spencer, Yeats, Wordsworth, Tennyson, and William Blake are
timeless. All these are depicting people’s culture in diversity.
As a mirror of life, literature helps readers to see life through the eyes of others and helps gain a new
perspective on living. This can be reflected on different fictions where the stories were made by the author
through their creative imagination with moral lessons. We usually read this material for fun. For example, a book
about a cat that talks. Non-fictional works like biographies of people are real life or factual stories of courage,
sacrifice and other such values never fail to inspire readers. For example, a documentary Film about poverty.
Importance of Literature
1. Literature is the foundation and reflection of life. It tells us about the history of mankind. It holds within
the universal themes of love, justice, hatred, war, desire and many others.
2. It allows us to develop thinking skills, new ideas and ethnical standpoints.
3. It provided gateway to teach the readers about life experiences from saddest stories to the most joyful
one.
4. It is a form of art, capable of bringing about emotions and also allows to learn about unique cultures of
other religions.
5. It connects human of different era, location, time, and culture and provides us direct approach to the
unique lifestyles that have been lived across the globe.
