Wildfires are a major annual issue in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in northern Russia, the largest region in Russia. In the summer of 2022, over 923,000 hectares of forest are burning. The fires spread widely due to dry conditions caused by human activity and dry thunderstorms. Local authorities have not provided adequate equipment to fight the fires, leading residents to battle massive blazes with shovels and tractors. Money allocated by the federal government for firefighting has already been spent by early July, and more aircraft and special equipment are needed to combat the massive fires across the region's vast territory.

My topic for discussion is wildfires in my native Republic. The causes
of annual fires are the human factor and dry thunderstorms in remote places. This is the major issue that occurs each year in summer period which spread in whole Republic and as you know this is the largest region in Russia. Forests, tundra, taiga are the largest zone that is in Yakutia. The total area of the forest fund lands is 255631 thousand hectares, including forest lands-193365 thousand hectares, of which 143818 thousand hectares are covered with forest vegetation. Forest cover is 46.6%; the total stock of wood at the root is 8917 million m3. Forests by area, stock and predominant species are extremely unevenly distributed, forest cover ranges from 93% in the southern uluses, to 25% in the northern ones. At the moment, 923 thousand hectares of forest are burning in Yakutia. Most villages are now in a dangerous situation. The authorities are not doing anything to extinguish the fires, they don't provide equipment for extinguishing, people go to extinguish massive fires with shovels and tractors. Sights like the Lena pillars are burning, and due to the fact that the Lena pillars recently became part of UNESCO, participants from "Greanpeace" flew here to extinguish fires. According to the minister, the Federal Forestry Agency does not transfer money to the regions for fighting fires, but sets limits. "Avialesookhrana" conducts auctions, enters into state contracts, and on the basis of acceptance certificates, the contractor transfers funds from the accounts of the Federal Forestry Agency. For example, for the whole of 2021, a limit of almost 290 million rubles was set for Yakutia. This limit was almost completely spent by July 7. Fires in Yakutia are tracked in two ways: satellite monitoring of ISDM and air patrol. The first method does not incur costs, unlike the second. 135.6 million rubles have been allocated for aviation monitoring this year. 21 aircraft are involved in monitoring, 13 helicopters are involved in extinguishing, and not one plane, as the media wrote. An hour of flight costs differently, the price depends on the type of aircraft. Yakutia wants to install equipment for causing precipitation on its planes The republic does not have such aircraft as the Be-200 and the An-26 "Cyclone" sounding aircraft. The Be-200 is only available from the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia. He works on request, the republic pays for fuel, accommodation and meals for the crew. The same is true with the "Cyclone", only in this case the federal "Avialesookhrana" pays for the maintenance and fuel. The head of Yakutia proposed to attract more Cyclone aircraft for extinguishing, because the territory of the republic is very large and one plane cannot cope. Also, Yakutia should contact the Russian government to order special equipment at the plant for independent work on causing precipitation. They want to install this equipment on existing aircraft. There are not enough people on extinguishing. The number of employees in forest fire formations is not enough. There are 193 forest firefighters in "Yakutlesresurs", 223 seasonal workers are additionally recruited. There are 224 parachutists — firefighters in the Aviation Security Service, 150 seasonal workers are additionally recruited. I would like the authorities to take decisive measures to extinguish fires and attract more equipment. They attracted more people to extinguish fires. If we manage to put them out, we will save the most beautiful nature and the largest forests in the world, beautiful sights and animals that are fleeing from their homes to survive.
