Too good to beat
Wayne Streams wanted a panel van for work – y’know, some old
beater he wouldn’t worry about…
■ Words: Mike Pye Pics: AlGoo
here’s a famous old VW advert

wondered how the man that
drives the snow plough drives to
the snowplough?”
Well, have you ever wondered what
a man like Wayne Streams, who quietly
does so much excellent work on other
people’s cars, chooses to build for
himself? At least, when he’s not fiddling

Wayne has an enviable rate of progress with his projects, but

on a trip in the USA,” explains the now
northern France-based Wayne. “We’d
been to Bakersfield for the Hot Rod

shipper with Roy Pitter as he was out
there at the same time, too.

It sort of looked

“There it was, this ’46 Panel, with John

all I need to do is the mechanical stuff, it
didn’t need any bodywork. It would be
perfect for what I needed.
“As I was seeing John later that day, I
asked him if it was for sale. Unfortunately,
he’d already sold it and it was going to
Australia, but he said he’d let me know if
another one comes along.”
Now, there are some people in the
world who say things like that and then
just forget. Or not bother looking. John’s
not one of them.

Two week wait

“Two weeks later, I’m sitting at home in
France and I get a call from John saying
he’s got me one…”
Wayne’s happy to admit that what
eventually turned up wasn’t quite like the
one he’d seen at the shippers, but he’d
committed to the project by then and so
just sucked his teeth and got stuck in.
“It sort of looked alright from a
distance, but someone had got at it. It had
some bad repairs and horrible paint, and
a load of bits were missing.” Luckily, that
man John was able to assist with all the
major bits he needed while, as Wayne put
it, “all the shiny stuff” came direct from

With CC having recently celebrated its 50th birthday, and the NSRA
planning celebrations for its half-century in 2022, it’s appropriate to

T
he ultimate celebration of hot rodding
as we know it converged on the
Kentucky Expo Center in Louisville,
Kentucky to celebrate the 50th Anniversary
of the National Street Rod Association’s
Street Rod Nationals.
With some 13,000 hot rods, customs,
classic trucks and muscle cars arriving from
all over America, and beyond, it was the
place to be to experience our hobby at its
finest moment.
Spread across nearly 500 acres of
manicured grounds, the air around the
Expo Center was charged with the sounds
of wicked V8s, dazzling chrome and excited
owners talking cars and street rodding.
The experience is deeper than that
though, with an endless stream of stuff
to do throughout your visit. Starting with
the 1.3m (yes million!) sq.ft indoor display
area, you were greeted in the lobby by the
Builders’ Showcase, with the country’s top
workshops exhibiting creations.

further advanced than shown here. There
is still a lot for Pete to do before the build
reaches conclusion, though, and we will
catch up with the progress he’s been
making in a future episode.
In the meantime, read on to find out how
parts from a ’48 Lincoln, ’37 Ford and Morris
Minor were added to this already unusual
mix. We kid you not, this really is a build
that’s breaking boundaries when it comes
to its constituent parts. And remember, it’s
being built to be IVA compliant, too. CC

Team talk
Drag racing is not just about the car and driver, it’s a team
effort. Understandably, when crew members put so much into
running the numbers, the euphoria when things go their way

64 CUSTOM CAR NOVEMBER 2020

2005 2010 201 2020

General
kidding
Over the years, General Motors has
made a great play of not being
involved with racing, yet its products
have never been far from the track,
whether that be circuit racing,
endurance racing or drag racing.
Here’s an interesting one – the
1983 ‘development programme’ GTP
Corvette. Not a racecar of course. At
least not an official GM one. Rather a
Lola T-710 chassis fitted with vaguely C4
Corvette-ish carbon / Kevlar bodywork
and a 775bhp, turbocharged, 209ci
V6 engine built from a production
GM engine by Ryan Falconer Racing
Engines. Not an official GM race engine
at all you understand?
Part of the programme was
apparently to develop a range of
tuning parts for GM’s production
229ci V6 at a time when V8s were
falling from favour with consumers.
And no doubt a bit of turbocharger
development on the side, too. This
 was the mid-’80s after all.
Seven cars were built in total, and
various versions of it raced for five
seasons between ’84 and ’88 in the
IMSA GT series, mostly under Hendrick
Motorsport. Ironically, though, it only
saw success when the V6 motors were
replaced with naturally-aspirated V8s.
