Light and Shadows Quiz

Name: Answer Key

1. Write the correct word beside each definition. Each word is used once.

Transparent Materials that let all light through.

Absorbed Light that is soaked up.

Natural Light from something in nature.

Refraction Light that is bent

Artificial Light that is made by man.

Translucent Materials that let some light through.

Reflection Light that is bounced back.

Opaque Materials that do not let any light through.

reflection, refraction, artificial, natural, translucent, transparent,

opaque, absorbed
2. Name 2 sources of natural light. Sun, lava, lightning, stars, bioluminescent animals (jellyfish, firefly)

3. Name 2 sources of artificial light. Lightbulb, cellphone, laptop, fluorescent lights

4. Light waves travel in a straight lines until they hit something. (besides waves)

5. What are 3 qualities of a reflective object?

Shiny , Smooth and Light-colored

6. What are 3 qualities of a non-reflective object? (absorbs light)

Dull , Rough and Dark-colored

7. Give an example of a transparent object clean glass (window, cup, fishtank)

8. Give an example of a translucent object wax paper, tea, fabric, leaf, thin and light plastic

9. Give an example of an opaque object desk, tree trunk, school chair, wood, metal, hard and thick
plastic

10. What two things do you need to make a shadow? object & light source

11. When is it safe to look at the sun? It is NEVER safe to look directly at the sun, even if you are
wearing sunglasses. However if you are wearing UV rated safety goggles or a welding mask it is less
dangerous. Looking at it through a pinhole projection safer than looking directly at the sun.

12. If an object is moved closer to the light source, the shadow will become bigger, thicker
13. If an object is moved farther from the light source, the shadow will become smaller, thinner

14.In each of the pictures below draw the tree’s shadow. Use detail to show the exact shape and size of the
tree’s shadow throughout the day. Be accurate.

Why did the tree’s shadow change? The tree’s shadow changed because the Sun is the light
source causing the tree’s shadow changes position and the Sun’s position changes throughout the
day.
How did the tree’s shadow change? The tree’s shadow went from west to east as the Sun goes
from east to west. The tree’s shadow is long at the beginning and the end of the day because the Sun
is low in the sky. The tree’s shadow is short in the middle of the day because the Sun is directly
above the tree.

15. Label the type of lens below the picture and show how the light rays are refracted.

Concave Lens Convex Lens

16. The visible spectrum is made up of colours. Name the colours in order.

(1)Red (2) Orange (3)Yellow (4)Green (5) Blue (6) Indigo (7)Violet
17. Explain why we see the colors that we do.We see the colors we do because when white light hits an
object that object absorbs all colors we do not see and the object reflects the colors that we can see.
18. You live in Hawaii which is hot all year round, would you buy a black car with black seats or a white car
with white seats? White car and white seats Explain why: A white car with white seats will reflect all the
light that hits it. This will keep the car and the seats cooler than a black car with black seats because
light waves are a source of energy that gives of heat. A black car and black seats would be hotter
because black absorbs the light waves and produces heat. 19. What is the difference between the Sun
and the Moon in regards to light? The Sun is a natural source of light because it emits light waves. The
moon is a natural source of light because it reflects the Sun’s light waves.
