Lab activity #2

Exercise I:
1. After logging in google earth navigate to the location
(31°54ʹ22.30ʺ N, 56°38ʹ59.91ʺ E)
2. You should see the structure indicated in Fig. 2.1
which is a “Doubly plunging anticline”. Our focus
will be on the tilted layers on the eastern side of the
structure in Figs. 2.2.
3. Fly around the are in Google Earth to get a feel of
the landscape, the direction that the ground slopes
and the direction that the rock layers are tilted.
Make sure you are viewing the terrain at 1x
elevation exaggeration (use Tools-options icon) in
google earth.

54°22ʹ30ʺN, 56°38ʹ59.91ʺE).

detail for mapping.
4. Define mappable units based on outcrop color and
features in Google Earth.
5. Draw red lines separating the map units (contact
surfaces) (Fig. 2.3) (notice those covered with fine
deposits make this portion dashed lines).
6. Label oldest layer (1) and youngest layer (10)
7. Draw blue lines centers of major valleys and show
drainage direction
8. Draw red arrows that point in the direction of tilt of
units

9. Sketch a cross section along XXʹ shown in Fig. 2.4.
Tilt the view to low angle and look parallel to the
ridge to see both the elevation profile and cross
section view. To draw the cross section do the
following:
a. Use the path tool in Google Earth to draw the cross
section line as indicated in Fig. 2.4.
b. Select the line, and show the elevation profile by
clicking (Edit/Show Elevation Profile) which
appears in a new window with an arbitrary vertical
scale (Fig. 2.5).
c. Drag the elevation profile box down to equalize the
vertical and horizontal scale to give a profile without
vertical exaggeration (Fig. 2.5).

d. Based on your sketch map and low angle view of the
elevation profile and tilted layers sketch in the
contacts between the map units in a cross section
view (use graph paper). Make sure you extend your
contacts above (dashed lines because the have been
eroded and below the elevation profile (solid lines to
show the geology underground).
