Malala Yousafzai is a young
Pakistani human rights
activist who rose to fame
after working with the BBC
when she was just 11 years
old. In addition, she is the
youngest winner of the
Nobel Prizes: she received
the award at the young age
of 17.
Malala Yousafzai became an
international symbol of the
struggle for girls' education
after she was shot in 2012 for
opposing Taliban restrictions on
women's education in her home
country of Pakistan. In 2009,
Malala had started blogging
under a pseudonym about the
increasing military activity in
her home village and the fear
that her school would be
attacked.
In 2013, Malala and her father
co-founded the Malala Fund
to raise awareness of the
social and economic effects
of girls' education and
empower them to demand
change. In December 2014,
she became the youngest
recipient of the Nobel Peace
Prize. Secretary-General
António Guterres appointed
Malala as a United Nations
Messenger of Peace in 2017
to help raise awareness of
the importance of girls'
education.
