Quarterly Labour Force Survey, October - December 2012: Teaching Dataset

Overview
Identification 7418
Abstract
The Quarterly Labour Force Survey October - December 2012: Teaching Dataset is based on the Quarterly Labour
Force Survey, October - December, 2012 (QLFS OD12) (available from the UK Data Archive under SN 7220) and
constitutes real data which are used by the government and are behind many headlines. The teaching dataset contains fewer
variables and has been subjected to certain simplifications and additions for the purpose of learning and teaching.

The main differences are:

the number of variables has been reduced;

extra variables (based on variables
from the original QLFS OD12 dataset) have been added, including a weight for which mean=1;

a reduced codebook
is provided.

Further information is available in the study documentation (below) which includes a dataset user
guide.

Main Topics:
The main topics covered are: socio-demographics, employment, housing tenure,
education, health.

Weighting
Weighting used. See documentation for details.

Data Collection
Data Collection Dates start 2012-10-01
end 2012-12-01
Data Collection Mode Compilation or synthesis of existing material. The QLFS is collected by face-to-face interview and
telephone interview, but the teaching dataset has been created by simplifying the original data.

Data Processing & Appraisal

Data Editing
The data were processed to the UK Data Archive's 'A*' standard. This is the Archive's highest standard, and means that an
extremely rigorous and comprehensive series of checks was carried out to ensure the quality of the data and documentation.
Firstly, checks were made that the number of cases and variables matched the depositor's records. Secondly, checks were
made that all variables had comprehensible variable labels and all nominal (categorical) variables had comprehensible value
labels. Where possible, either with reference to the documentation and/or in communication with the depositor, labels were
accordingly edited or created. Thirdly, logical checks were performed to ensure that nominal (categorical) variables had
values within the range defined (either by value labels or in the depositor's documentation). Lastly, any data or documentation
that breached confidentiality rules were altered or suppressed to preserve anonymity.
