Question 1

The Laboratory School was the established by Dewey in 1896. The curriculum
emphasized on theoretical work that work together with the demands on practice.
They are promoting occupational activities that are believed can help in the
development of students in various aspects.

The key pedagogical methods implemented in the laboratory is the

experiential learning which providing children with “first-hand experience”. Using

this method, children are given hands-on tasks based on their developmental levels

and able to help them to connect the knowledge gained with the real world practices.

The learning by doing process ables to promote them as an active learner. s At the

same time, it also involved the integrated of various skills in one particular

occupational activity. For examples, 6-year-old children were being enrolled into

agricultural field, which required them to build a farm, planted wheat, cotton and so

on. From here, they need to decide the design and set up of the farm, the measurement

skills and make their own decision in which crops to be planted. At the same time,

they also able to interact with nature and society which are considered as vital aspects

in order to step into adult life in future. The collaboration among the children are

believed that can produce a just society as they learnt to erase any kind of prejudices.

The pedagogical methods are aligned with Dewey’s educational theory as he

also students-based learning. According to Dewey, students need to carry out

experiments and solve problems continuously in order to create new knowledge. This

idea runs parallel to the concept, occupational activities which being emphasised in

the Laboratory school. Teachers will assign a task and work as facilitator in helping

them to create new knowledge. In this process, students will master the problems

solving skills and ready to apply it in their adult life.

Furthermore, the pedagogical methods also highlighted the collaboration

among the students. This idea aligned with Dewey’s educational theory. To Dewey,

some abilities and skills can only be learnt in a group such as social skill. From the

occupational activities, students are trained to work in group. They learnt to accept all

the opinions from their group members without any bias. This may help in their

intellectual and moral stature growth.

At the same time, students can participate in meaningful projects that will

enhance them in various aspects. For example, the 4 and 5 years old students are

engaged in cooking, sewing activities. This can fulfilling their learning experience.

The learning process will further let the educator to notice his/her interest and

potential. As long as they have interest in a particular activity, they will gain a lot

through the constructivist activity.

To put it in a nutshell, students-oriented method, experiential learning,

constructivist activities are the key to Dewey’s pedagogy. All this can be found in the

Labaoratory School’s curriculum, which are believed aligned to Dewey’s Theory.

Question 2

In this modern era, technology is widely used in schools. The technology has

changed the way students learn and teachers teach. With the use of technology,

education has become more accessible, interesting and effective especially for the

latchkey children. Latchkey children are those who stay alone or with sibling after

school hour.

One of the most significant effects is we can provide more opportunities for

the children to learn from anywhere and at anytime. Educators can prepare digital

textbooks and some interactive educational videos for the children to access

educational materials from any location. For example, the DiDik TV which launched

by our educational ministry. Through this, children can learn a lot even without

parents’ guidance. With the existence of technology in learning system, education has

become more inclusive and accessible.

With technology, educators can also tailor some learning plans for the

children according to their level. This ensures that each student learns at their own

pace and gain support they need to succeed. For example, teacher can use the adaptive

learning software such as Whatfix, Knewton to personalise learning for them. Hence,

the latchkey children can access it at home without wasting of time. Personalised

learning has been shown to improve the academic performance and able to motivate

the students.

Furthermore, artificial Intelligence (AI) can be utilised in our learning system.

It is due to AI can help educators to ensure the effectiveness of the activities being

planned for the latchkey children and able to evaluate students’ answers and

viewpoints automatically. For example, by using natural language processing and

image recognition techniques, AI can identify and evaluate students’ reports in the

activities.

Also, AI can be used to collect and analyse students’ assessment data. From

here, educators can have the detailed analysis of the students. The data can help

educators to identify the tendencies, weaknesses or additional needs of the latchkey

students. Hence, educators can adjust his or her teaching plans based on the data.

Besides, parents can also use technology to track their children’s progress at

school. For example, parents can use some communication platforms such as

Whatsapp to communicate with teachers. So, parents can get feedback on their

children’s achievement, behavior and attendance. Educators can also share some

parenting tips, resources and suitable learning strategies for latchkey children with

parents through the communication platform. Educators can also make use of some

social medias such as facebook to deliver the school updates, events, and students’

achievements. This can ensure that the parents always stay updated even if they

cannot attend physical meetings.

As conclusion, technology has huge impact on education as it increase the

access to education for all walks of life. As technology will continue to advance in

this era and in the future, hence, it is important that we continue to explore new ways

to use technology to enhance the educational experience. By doing so, we can ensure

all students have equal access to education, and well-prepare for future.
