V. READ THE PASSAGE AND CHOOSE TRUE/ FALSE:
Passage 1: Taste or gustation is one of the five traditional senses including hearing,
sight, touch and smell. Humans can distinguish five basic tastes. Each and every one of them
is a message that tells us something about what we put into our mouth, so we can decide
whether it should be eaten. A sweet taste can signal the presence of natural sugars and other
carbohydrates found in many fruits and honey. They play an important role in giving and
storing energy. Salty foods usually signal the presence of sodium. This element is necessary
for maintaining our bodies’ water balance and circulating the flow of blood and nutrients.
Bitter tastes can signal the presence of 35 different proteins found in plants. However, some
of them are unpleasant to taste and can be toxic. A sour taste can signal the presence of acidic
solutions like lemon juice and organic acids. Acids may indicate that food is no longer
healthy and suitable to eat. Umami or savoury comes from protein building blocks (amino
acids) found naturally in protein-rich foods like meats and cheese.
* Decide if the statements from 1 to 4 are True or False:
1. The five basic tastes include sweet, salty, bitter, sour and savoury. ______
2. Sodium plays an important role in giving and storing energy. ______
3. All 35 different proteins found in plants are poisonous and inedible. ______
4. If the food tastes sour, it is unlikely to do you any good. ______
Choose the correct answer to each question:
5. What does the word “They” refer to?
A. sugars and carbohydrates B. blood and nutrients
C. lemon juice and acidic solutions D. protein-rich foods
6. Why does the author mention “amino acids”?
A. To explain how proteins can be found in meats and cheese.
B. To illustrate the use of protein building blocks in cooking.
C. To indicate that savory food can cause harm to human well-being.
D. To provide another biological term of the building blocks of proteins.
Passage 2: It is a common misconception that those who take part in extreme sports or
look for an “adrenaline rush” are most likely to be young and male. This way of thinking
makes extreme sports become viewed in a way that is inaccessible to “normal people”. In
fact, participation in extreme activities is beneficial to humans. Participants from all sorts of
extreme sports broaden their extraordinary sensory experience that is not usually available in
everyday life. This is because their ability to see, here and feel are all heightened during their
participation. For example, base jumpers often talk about an enhanced capacity to see every
nook and cranny, shapes and sizes of the rock even though they are travelling at 200 mph.
What’s more, there is clear evidence that most sensation-seekers develop positive
relationships with the natural world and pro-environmental behaviors. During their
participation in extreme sports, participants feel like they are merging with the environment
which invariably turns into a feeling of being profoundly part of nature. This may be one
reason why so many extreme sports athletes spend a great deal of energy and time protecting
the natural environment and working hard to raise public awareness of its importance.
* Decide if the statements from 1 to 4 are True or False:
1. Most people are under the impression that participants in extreme sports are young and male.

2. Participation in extreme sports does harm to human well-being. _____
3. Extreme sports participation is unlikely to be suitable for the general population. _____
4. Participants in adventure sports can experience the feeling of merging with nature. _____
Choose the correct answer to each question:
5. What does the phrase “sensation-seekers” refer to?
A. base jumpers B. normal people C. sizes and shapes D. extreme sports athletes.
6. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To warn about the potential risks of extreme sports.
B. To give information about pro-environmental campaigns.
C. To encourage the practice of extreme sports.
D. To demonstrate the positive effects of extreme sports on human well-being.
