14. Finger exercise

Design a colour scheme

Before you start

• What do you know about colour? About decoration? About promoting a scheme? Choose your
teammates according to their and your strengths.
• Make sure you use the correct vocabulary talking about colours.
• Make sure you use can in the correct way.
• Make sure you use the simple present correctly.
• Make sure you take into account all the things your colour scheme needs to do (creative – study –
joy and peace, favourite colours …)
• Consider a “theme” to keep it all together.
• Make sure your colour scheme is: beautiful, realistic and convincing.

67 Design a colour scheme for your class.

Work in groups. Make sure you have an area used to study, an area to be creative and an overall atmosphere of
joy and peace. You can use paint, accessories, furniture … But keep it real: we are talking about a classroom,
not a living room.

Take into account:

• the favourite colour of your teacher
• the overall favourite colour of your classmates
• the colours of your school, if your school has a logo of any kind

Work it out in a model, so your classmates and teacher get a clear vision of what you want.
Present your colour scheme to your class explaining why you chose these shades:
• What are the benefits?
• Why is your colour scheme better than the others?

After you finish

• Did you choose your teammates according to their and your strengths? What is your strength?
What is theirs?
• Did you use the correct vocabulary talking about colours?
• Did you use can in the correct way?
• Did you use the simple present correctly?
• Does your colour scheme take everything into account?
• Does your colour scheme have a theme?
• Is your colour scheme: beautiful, realistic and convincing?

Unit 6 A Matter of Loaf and Death 375

15. Did you know?
Why is the sky blue?
68 Read the text and answer the questions.

Light is a kind of energy that can travel through space. Light from the sun or a light bulb looks white, but it is really
a mixture of many colours.
The colours in white light are red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. You can see these colours when you look
at a rainbow in the sky.
The sky is filled with air. Air is a mixture of tiny gas molecules and small bits of solid stuff, like dust.
As sunlight goes through the air, it bumps into the molecules and dust. When light hits a gas molecule, it may
bounce off in a different direction.

white light
directly from
the sun blue sky from
scattered light

Some colours of light, like red and orange, pass straight through the air. But most of the blue light bounces off in
all directions. In this way, the blue light gets scattered all around the sky.
When you look up, some of this blue light reaches your eyes from all over the sky. Since you see blue light from
everywhere overhead, the sky looks blue.

white light
directly from
the sun no scattered light,
sky black and dark

In space, there is no air. Because there is nothing for the light to bounce off, it just goes straight. None of the light
gets scattered, and the "sky" looks dark and black.

90 Read Brian’s post. What were his highs and lows?

Brian

It’s five months now since we moved to Australia, time for a recap! I will never forget the day we arrived. We lost half of
our luggage; Stephanie couldn’t find her keys, Lilly was angry because she didn’t want to leave England. And I … well …
I was kind of angry and sad and curious and afraid all at the same time. It was the first time ever I saw my dad actually
cry. There were only two tears rolling down his cheeks, but I am positive: I saw those tears!
Time for the highs and the lows then. One of the highs definitely was learning how to surf. I hated it until I started loving
it. An all-time low was the day Lilly wanted to teach Hobbes how to behave. My cat was so angry! And I was so angry!
