It is Friday morning. Some of the teachers are standing in front of the school, talking to each other. We are
watching them. Not all of us. Jim and Sara are doing their homework. They are always late. And Jeff is answering

game. But they never pay attention to what’s happening. So why are they suddenly paying attention now?

18 Read the joke. What does it tell you about the use of the present continuous?
Mum But you’ve got your eyes closed, Alice. Why are you doing that?
• We use a present continuous tense when we want to say that the action is going on in the
present. We usually see this action as temporary.
• Some verbs are not normally used in the continuous because they express a state rather than
an action.
e.g. to know, to remember, to understand, to believe, to cost, to mean, to like, to love, to want,
to prefer

Where am I waiting?

21 Listen to the song and mark the present simple in blue and the present continuous in
green.
Look around you. Write down ten sentences describing things that are happening right now.

Work out a schedule for one week. Where will you go? When?
Why? How much money will you save?
Make sure you use the correct vocabulary about public places and money.
On the spot
Shopping. We all do it – but beyond basic food and housing, why do we buy? What forces act upon us in a [1]? Is
your [2] hobby a dangerous habit? After 14 years in New York, expat Australian Fiona Dadswell now shops every
single day, 'I feel excited when I find something I want to [3]. I have only one question when I see a nice T-shirt:
where are the [4], I want to [5]! I have a golden [6] – that says it all, no? I never [7]. And I never listen to [8].
I hope this way I [9] less [10]. I don’t know if it really works that way. Maybe I have to buy a [11]. Sometimes when
I am in the city, I visit the [12], [13], [14] … All these places where I can’t spend money. But it doesn’t help.'
We spend a lot of money shopping for our hobbies as well. Think about all the stuff you need when you have a
hobby like surfing or collecting stamps. Not everybody likes bird watching or solving puzzles.
Shopping can cause the brain to release dopamine … the same pleasure pathway activated by food, sex, and
drugs. But why would the brain be programmed to respond so powerfully to something so … ordinary?
Paco Underhill: 'There is nothing trivial about shopping. How much hunting and gathering does the modern man
or woman do? That gene, that DNA has been transformed into our shopping instinct when we walk past the [15]
in a [16]. [17] use that instinct. We don’t need 60% of what we buy when we walk into a shop. I want you to notice
the use of the right hand. We know that in most shops, they work better with a counter clockwise circulation
pattern that puts the grabbing hand closest to the [18]. The more time we spend in a shop, the more we buy.
Or the less money we [19].'
A groundbreaking study last year found that 5.9% of Americans have a shopping addiction. All the evidence
points one way – the shopping instinct, ordinary as it sounds – is actually one of life’s more powerful forces.
