13 Listen to and read this monologue of Leonard about memory and answer the questions.
Memory’s not perfect. It’s not even that good. Ask the police, eyewitness testimony
is unreliable. The cops don’t catch a killer by sitting around remembering stuff.
They collect facts, make notes, draw conclusions. Facts, not memories: that’s how
you investigate. I know; it’s what I used to do. Memory can change the shape of a
room or the colour of a car. It’s an interpretation, not a record. Memories can be
changed or distorted and they’re irrelevant if you have the facts.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Can facts be useful without memories, without a larger context to check and evaluate your
information?
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Should Leonard trust his own notes? Is it possible for him to do anything if he doesn’t trust?
Memory is not always very good. But Leonard’s facts aren’t always that factual.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Leonard’s most recent memory will always be the one of his wife dying. Can you heal without time?

You think you clearly remember something that never actually happened. Everybody can create false
memories, even those people who have amazingly good memories.
Researchers showed volunteers images and asked them to imagine other images at the same time. Later, many
of the volunteers recalled the imagined images as real. If you vividly imagine something, it can leave a trace in
your brain similar to that of a really experienced event.
It is an interesting finding. Witnesses to crimes can think they saw something that has actually been suggested
to them later on. False childhood memories can be difficult to separate from actual ones, especially when they
are painful. Advertisers use false memories to make us want to buy.

How to make a fancy bow
7
In this step, you create the centre loop of your bow. Take the tail end that is on the front and create a
H backward loop with the tail end now going down over the top of the bow to the back.
8
To secure the bow, use a length of wire that is twisted around the back. Wire is ideal because it holds
E securely, but also allows you to move the loops around to spread out the bow when you’re ready to
fluff it.
3
Fold a length of ribbon backward to create a loop and pinch it with it your thumb. This loop will be the
G smallest (inside) loop on the left-side of your bow. The tail of your bow will continue to hang down in
front.
5 Continue making loops on the back alternating from the left to the right. Remember that each loop
C should be a bit bigger than the one before it.
2
Hold the ribbon in your hand and leave a tail long enough to work as one end of your bow plus the
C length you’ll need for the centre loop. When in doubt, leave more! The tail should be in the front of
your hand.
9
Now you’re ready to fluff! For this, all you need to do is pull the loops alternating up and down so that
D each one is visible. I tend to like the biggest loops on the back to come down toward the tail of the
bow, as shown below.
6
When you have reached your desired size, you are ready to finish it off! The number of loops
A you create and the size of the loops will depend on the size you want for your finished bow, but
regardless, always use an odd number of loops on each side. Here you can see that I have five loops
per side going from smallest to biggest and one tail of the bow is on the front and the other (still
attached to the spool) is on the back.
4
Fold another loop backward on the other side that matches in size to the first loop. This will be your
F smallest (inside) loop on the right-side of your bow, so you want the two sides to be even. Each loop
thereafter will get progressively bigger. You should now have two matching loops, one on the left and
one on the right. The tail is still hanging down in the front.

• If there are 23 people in a room there is a 50-50 chance that two of them will share a birthday. This is
known as the birthday paradox, because it appears there are only 22 possible pairs and therefore a low
chance of a match. In fact, because every guest could match with every other guest, there are 253 possible
combinations (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 … up to 22) and the probability of finding a successful one is 50.048 per cent.
• The most common birth date of the year is 5th of October which falls 9 months after the New Year’s Eve.
• The Sultan of Brunei hosted the world’s most expensive birthday party to celebrate his 50th Birthday on 13
July, 1996. The cost was a whopping US $27.2 million. Three concerts featuring Michael Jackson costs US $16
million of the total amounts.
• In the 19th and early 20th centuries, a popular 21st birthday present was to have all your teeth removed and
replaced with a set of dentures – the idea was it would prevent the expense of dental treatment later in life.
• More people celebrate their birthdays in August than in any other month (about 9% of all people). The two
other months that rate high for birthdays are July and September.

In that same period, Uncle Sam became a superhero in comic books. He is the spirit of a fallen
soldier from the American Revolution and pops up whenever his country needs him to fight.
1
Uncle Sam is a walking symbol of America. He became “the American people and government”
A during the War of 1812. According to legend, the character of Uncle Sam is based on the real
Samuel Wilson, a meat packer from New York and a fervent American patriot. He stamped the
initials “U.S.” on barrels of meat he sold to the Army in the War of 1812, it became a joke to say
these initials stood for Uncle Sam instead of United States.

How many carrots / cabbage / lettuce … does the rabbit want? The rabbits wants some vegetables.
How many carrots / cabbage / lettuce … does the butcher have? The butcher doesn’t have any. But neither does he
have nails and a hammer to do as he threatens.
One day a rabbit walked into the butcher’s shop and asked the butcher, “Do you have any carrots?”
The butcher replied, “No, I’m sorry, sir, but this is a butchers’ shop. We don’t sell vegetables in here. Go to the
greengrocer at the other end of the street. I’m sure he’s got some carrots.”
The rabbit thanked the butcher and left the shop.
The next day the rabbit went into the butcher’s shop again.
“Good morning! I’d like a lettuce and some carrots, please.”
“Look, I’m sorry, sir! I told you yesterday - we don’t sell any vegetables in here, only meat.”
“OK, I see,” said the rabbit and left the shop.
On the third day, the rabbit walked into the shop again and said,
“Hello, could you give me some carrots and a cabbage, please?”
This time the butcher was very angry.
“I told you yesterday and the day before. We don’t sell any vegetables in here. No carrots, no lettuce, no cabbage
and no onions. Do you understand? The next time you come in here and ask for vegetables, I’m going to take a
hammer and I’m going to nail your ears to the floor!”
The next day, the rabbit was in the butcher’s shop again.
“Good morning!” he said. “Do have any nails?”
“No,” said the butcher, “I don’t have any nails.”
“Do you have a hammer?” asked the rabbit.
“No, I don’t,” the butcher replied.
“Good,” said the rabbit, “Then can I have some carrots, please?”
Some / any
Some (een beetje, wat, enige …) is used in affirmative sentences.
I’d like some potatoes.
I’d love some water.
Yes, I’d like some.
You use any when the speaker is uncertain about the answer.
Is there any lemonade? (The speaker doesn’t know if there is lemonade.)
57 Some or any? Put the number of the sentence in the correct column.
some any
1-3-4-7-8-9 2-5-6-10
58 Turn these words into a good sentence. Do you need some or any?
The class is divided in two teams. The teacher draws a frame on the board. You
make a good sentence with some (nought) or any (cross). If the other team
decides your sentence is good, you can add a nought or cross. The first team to
get a row of three wins.
Question tags
Expecting that someone will agree: tags with falling tone. This tag is not a real question, because the
speaker expects that the other person will agree. Like we use “Niet waar?” or “He?” in Dutch.
Asking if you are right: tags with rising tone. This tag really is a question, the speaker is not sure. Like we
use “Toch niet?” or “Toch wel?” in Dutch.

Discussing gender
He’s a tough guy. He doesn’t show emotion.
Man up! Boys don’t cry.
She can’t help talking so much. She’s a girl.
Of course boys can cry and show feelings. But they don’t know how. They need a role model.
That girl is tougher than any boy.
She’s a girl. You should treat her like a lady.
He can’t help being stubborn. He’s just a guy that way.

What type of girl is she? She’s a queen bee / girly girl / fashionista …
She’s a real tomboy.
What type of girl do you want to be? I don’t know. What do you think?
I don’t know. Do I have to choose?
I definitely want to be a queen bee.
I don’t care. But not the girl-next-door. Nobody
wants to be the girl-next-door, do they?
What type of boy do you like? I love bad guys. They are interesting!

This is such a quietly depressing (and Wow. I don’t really know where to get started on
revealing) image. Not least because this “Jennifer Lawrence wearing a revealing dress
in the cold” controversy. This is not only utterly
I’ve been outside today and it’s bloody ridiculous, I am extremely offended. That Versace
FREEZING. dress was fabulous, you think I’m going to cover
that gorgeous dress up with a coat and a scarf? I
was outside for 5 minutes. I would have stood in
the snow for that dress because I love fashion and
that was my choice.
This is sexist, this is ridiculous, this is not
feminism. Over- reacting about everything
someone says or does, creating controversy over
silly innocuous things such as what I choose to
wear or not wear, is not moving us forward. It’s
creating silly distractions from real issues. Get a
grip people. Everything you see me wear is my
choice. And if I want to be cold THAT’S MY CHOICE
TOO!
