212 Unit 4 Memento

13 Listen to and read this monologue of Leonard about memory and answer the questions.

Memory’s not perfect. It’s not even that good. Ask the police, eyewitness testimony
is unreliable. The cops don’t catch a killer by sitting around remembering stuff.
They collect facts, make notes, draw conclusions. Facts, not memories: that’s how
you investigate. I know; it’s what I used to do. Memory can change the shape of a
room or the colour of a car. It’s an interpretation, not a record. Memories can be
changed or distorted and they’re irrelevant if you have the facts.

What does Leonard say about memories?

They are useless, because they are manipulated.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

What does Leonard say about facts?

Only facts matter, because you can trust them.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Can facts be useful without memories, without a larger context to check and evaluate your
information?

Without context, you can’t trust facts either.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Should Leonard trust his own notes? Is it possible for him to do anything if he doesn’t trust?

Memory is not always very good. But Leonard’s facts aren’t always that factual.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

And they can be misinterpreted.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Leonard’s most recent memory will always be the one of his wife dying. Can you heal without time?

Maybe this is why all he wants to do is find the killer of his wife. Maybe he hopes that this way, he can finally
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

move on instead of being stuck in time.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

If you could give Leonard one tattoo that would help solve all of his problems, what would it be?

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Do we manipulate our memories to be happy? Are we right to do so? Discuss.

Unit 4 Memento 213

3. Finger exercise
Stuck in time

Before you start

• Choose a partner who complements you.
• How important do you think memories are? Discuss.
• Which situation do you choose? Why? Because it is funny / interesting / gives the best
possibilities … ?
• Who is in the situation? Why?
• Who is doing the dialogue?
• How are you going to make your dialogue memorable? Will it be funny / sad / clever …
• What can be a possible solution? Do you want a solution that is real? Imaginary?
• Make sure you use the vocabulary about memories.
• Make sure you use the correct forms of the present simple.
• Make sure you use the correct forms of to be.
• Make sure you use the correct personal pronouns.

14 The older you get, the more memories you have.

You change over time and you know it. What if your perception of yourself was stuck in time, because you can
no longer produce memories, like Leonard? What if you are a teenager, but in your head you are still a toddler?
What would be the consequences in one of the following situations?

Make it memorable! Here are some ideas:

• In the classroom when the teacher asks you a question.
• In the swimming pool.
• Out on the street with a bike.
• Talking to a boy / girl who is in love with you.

Work in pairs. Write out a possible situation.

Think about:
• appearances (what clothes do you wear)
• surroundings (do you recognise things?)
• other people (how do they react)

It has to have a dialogue that you will present to your classmates.

Think about a solution.

• How can you cope with the situation and make the best of it?
• How important do you think memories are?
• How does your work show this?

214 Unit 4 Memento

1

After you finish

• Does your work show what you think about memories?
• Is your work memorable? Why?
• Did you use the vocabulary about memories? Always – most of the time – sometimes – never
• Did you use the correct forms of the present simple? Always – most of the time –
sometimes – never
• Did you use the correct forms of to be? Always – most of the time – sometimes – never

False memories
23 Read the text and answer the questions.

You think you clearly remember something that never actually happened. Everybody can create false
memories, even those people who have amazingly good memories.
Researchers showed volunteers images and asked them to imagine other images at the same time. Later, many
of the volunteers recalled the imagined images as real. If you vividly imagine something, it can leave a trace in
your brain similar to that of a really experienced event.
It is an interesting finding. Witnesses to crimes can think they saw something that has actually been suggested
to them later on. False childhood memories can be difficult to separate from actual ones, especially when they
are painful. Advertisers use false memories to make us want to buy.

A woman goes into an ice cream parlour. She walks up to the man at the counter and says, “I’d like some
chocolate ice cream, please.”
“I’m sorry, madam,” says the man, “but I’m afraid we’re out of chocolate.”
“Oh,” says the woman. “In that case I’ll have some chocolate.”
So the man says, “No, no, madam. You don’t understand. We have run out of chocolate.”
“Oh,” replies the woman. “Then I’ll just have chocolate.”
The man behind the counter looks at the lady and says, “OK, spell “van”, as in “vanilla.”
So, the woman spells “V-A-N.”
“All right,” says the ice cream man, “spell “straw”, as in “strawberry.”
The woman says, “OK. S-T-R-A-W.”

30 How good is your memory?

Close your eyes and test each other on the contents of the classroom.
Ask questions such as: How many chairs are there? Is there a green poster on the wall?

Now, you change things in your classroom while some students keep their eyes closed. Can they see the
differences?

e.g. There were four chairs, now there is only one chair.

1
How to make a fancy bow

7
In this step, you create the centre loop of your bow. Take the tail end that is on the front and create a
H backward loop with the tail end now going down over the top of the bow to the back.

8
To secure the bow, use a length of wire that is twisted around the back. Wire is ideal because it holds
E securely, but also allows you to move the loops around to spread out the bow when you’re ready to
fluff it.

3
Fold a length of ribbon backward to create a loop and pinch it with it your thumb. This loop will be the
G smallest (inside) loop on the left-side of your bow. The tail of your bow will continue to hang down in
front.
5 Continue making loops on the back alternating from the left to the right. Remember that each loop
C should be a bit bigger than the one before it.

2
Hold the ribbon in your hand and leave a tail long enough to work as one end of your bow plus the
C length you’ll need for the centre loop. When in doubt, leave more! The tail should be in the front of
your hand.

228 Unit 4 Memento

1

9
Now you’re ready to fluff! For this, all you need to do is pull the loops alternating up and down so that
D each one is visible. I tend to like the biggest loops on the back to come down toward the tail of the
bow, as shown below.

6
When you have reached your desired size, you are ready to finish it off! The number of loops
A you create and the size of the loops will depend on the size you want for your finished bow, but
regardless, always use an odd number of loops on each side. Here you can see that I have five loops
per side going from smallest to biggest and one tail of the bow is on the front and the other (still
attached to the spool) is on the back.

4
Fold another loop backward on the other side that matches in size to the first loop. This will be your
F smallest (inside) loop on the right-side of your bow, so you want the two sides to be even. Each loop
thereafter will get progressively bigger. You should now have two matching loops, one on the left and
one on the right. The tail is still hanging down in the front.

Put the paragraphs in the correct order by numbering them.

Birthday facts
• Since your last birthday 31,536,000 seconds have passed in which you will have had about 1,460 dreams.
• If there are 23 people in a room there is a 50-50 chance that two of them will share a birthday. This is
known as the birthday paradox, because it appears there are only 22 possible pairs and therefore a low
chance of a match. In fact, because every guest could match with every other guest, there are 253 possible
combinations (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 … up to 22) and the probability of finding a successful one is 50.048 per cent.
• The most common birth date of the year is 5th of October which falls 9 months after the New Year’s Eve.
• The Sultan of Brunei hosted the world’s most expensive birthday party to celebrate his 50th Birthday on 13
July, 1996. The cost was a whopping US $27.2 million. Three concerts featuring Michael Jackson costs US $16
million of the total amounts.
• In the 19th and early 20th centuries, a popular 21st birthday present was to have all your teeth removed and
replaced with a set of dentures – the idea was it would prevent the expense of dental treatment later in life.
• More people celebrate their birthdays in August than in any other month (about 9% of all people). The two
other months that rate high for birthdays are July and September.

Unit 4 Memento 241

15. The basics
It is cold, isn’t it? Yes it is!

Question tags
Expecting that someone will agree: tags with falling tone. This tag is not a real question, because the
speaker expects that the other person will agree. Like we use “Niet waar?” or “He?” in Dutch.

You do like Christmas, don’t you? Yes, I do.

(affirmative statement + negative tag) (I agree)
It is hot today, isn’t it? Yes, it is.
You haven’t got pets, have you? No, I haven’t.
(negative statement + affirmative tag) (I agree)

Asking if you are right: tags with rising tone. This tag really is a question, the speaker is not sure. Like we
use “Toch niet?” or “Toch wel?” in Dutch.

It is Thursday today, isn’t it? Yes, it is.

You do like Christmas, don’t you? No, I don’t.
You have got a sister, haven’t you? No, I have a brother.

! They are yellow, aren’t they?

NOT: They are yellow, isn’t it?
I am clever, aren’t I?

65 Work with a partner. One of you is very decisive and wants to go ahead. The other one is
very unsure and questions everything (using tags). Have a conversation about:

• painting the classroom (when – why – how – what colour …)

• buying a dog and taking care of it together
• not doing your homework (without getting detention)

66 How much do you remember about these events? Use tag questions to check your
partner’s knowledge.

16. Mouth gymnastics

Contractions (stress)
67 Weak forms written with an apostrophe are called contractions (e.g. isn’t, they’re).
Contractions show the way we normally speak. In the sentence “Look, it’s snowing!”, the
most important word is snowing. The word “is” is unstressed and we use the contraction
“it’s”. But in the sentence “Yes, it is!” the word “is” is the most important word and we use
the full form, not the contraction. We use these contractions in many types of informal
writing, as well as in speech.
Read the sentences aloud and underline the form you use. The contracted form or the full
form? Why?

1) Why aren’t you listening? 5) They aren’t here.

But I am / I’m listening! You are talking about the weather. They’re / They are here. Look again!

6) You’re / You are mad!

2) The sun is / ’s shining very brightly, isn’t it?
No, I’m / I am not!
It certainly is.

7) I don’t think it is Friday today.

3) Right then, I’m / I am ready. Let’s go!
It is / It’s, actually.
No, I’m / I am busy right now!

4) What’s / What is the time?

It is / It’s ten to five.

Boys don’t cry

Discussing gender
He’s a tough guy. He doesn’t show emotion.
Man up! Boys don’t cry.
She can’t help talking so much. She’s a girl.
Of course boys can cry and show feelings. But they don’t know how. They need a role model.
That girl is tougher than any boy.
She’s a girl. You should treat her like a lady.
He can’t help being stubborn. He’s just a guy that way.

Boys don’t [1] – The Cure

I would say I’m [2] Hiding the [4] in my eyes

If I thought that it would change your mind Because boys don’t [1]
But I know that this time I would tell you
I have said too much That I [5] you
Been too unkind If I thought that you would stay
I try to [3] about it But I know that it’s no use
Cover it all up with lies That you’ve already
I try and [3] about it Gone away
Hiding the [4] in my eyes Misjudged your limit
Because boys don’t [1] Pushed you too far
Boys don’t [1] Took you for granted
I would break down at your feet I thought that you needed me more
And beg forgiveness Now I would do most anything
Plead with you To get you back by my side
But I know that it’s too late But I just keep on laughing
And now there’s nothing I can do Hiding the [4] in my eyes
So I try to [3] about it Because boys don’t [1]
Cover it all up with lies Boys don’t [1]
I try to [3] about it Boys don’t [1]

This is such a quietly depressing (and Wow. I don’t really know where to get started on
revealing) image. Not least because this “Jennifer Lawrence wearing a revealing dress
in the cold” controversy. This is not only utterly
I’ve been outside today and it’s bloody ridiculous, I am extremely offended. That Versace
FREEZING. dress was fabulous, you think I’m going to cover
that gorgeous dress up with a coat and a scarf? I
was outside for 5 minutes. I would have stood in
the snow for that dress because I love fashion and
that was my choice.
This is sexist, this is ridiculous, this is not
feminism. Over- reacting about everything
someone says or does, creating controversy over
silly innocuous things such as what I choose to
wear or not wear, is not moving us forward. It’s
creating silly distractions from real issues. Get a
grip people. Everything you see me wear is my
choice. And if I want to be cold THAT’S MY CHOICE
TOO!

• Who is in charge in your group? Why?
• Divide the research. Who is taking care of what? By when?
• Share your research: what are your most important findings?
• Brainstorm about how to put your research into practical, realistic tips.
• Write down a draft of your tips.
• Brainstorm about the social media you want to use? Which social media do you choose? Why?
Make sure you use at least two different types.
• Use the correct vocabulary about memory / time.
• Use the correct ordinal numbers for your tips.
• Use correct question word questions and question tags when discussing in group.

eat …) can help your memory.
• Write down four practical, concrete tips about how to use sport to boost your memory.
• Write down four practical, concrete tips about how free time is important to boost your memory.
• Write down four practical, concrete tips to use while studying. To make sure you don’t spend more time
behind your desk than necessary. And to make sure you know your stuff.

Wrap your tips in a social media campaign that lasts a week. (So your classmates get at least one new tip
a day.) After this week, your classmates will give feedback on:
• The effect of the tips.
• The use of social media. Did it work?
• How easy / difficult it was to use the tips.
• Which tip was the best?
• Which tip was the worst?
