Tonight, my father meets Jennifer Lawrence. His company Someone who is really loving his job …
won an award for the things they do to get a greener
planet. A project Jennifer Lawrence supports, apparently.
So I repeat: tonight, my father meets JENNIFER LAWRENCE!
And the thing he’s worried about most is the weather.
Because there's a barbecue planned and the weather
forecast predicts storm.
The thing I worry about the most is that I have to stay
home … Because my father has a job to do. It’s a hell of a
job, but someone‘s got to do it …

Brian is talking with his friend Amy from Yorkshire via Skype. You are Brian. Your partner is Amy.
Talk about the weather. Use the following structure.

Brian Tomorrow, it is going to be … here.

Is it going to be cold in Australia tomorrow?
No, it is going to be hot, 32°C.

Unit 5 An Inconvenient Truth 269

8 What do you do when … ?

Complete these sentences, using the simple present.

1) When it is sunny, I ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ .

2) When it is rainy, I ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ .

3) When it is windy, I ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ .

4) When it is snowy, I ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ .

5) When it is cloudy, I __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ .

7) When it is hailing, I __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ .

8) When it is stormy, I _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ .

Now, play the following game.

Divide yourselves into groups. Take turns asking the question “What do
you do when it is … ?” followed by the different types of weather. If two of
you have matching answers (e.g. you both like to go to the beach when it is
sunny), you both get one point. Continue asking and answering questions
until you have read all your sentences. Whoever has the highest number of
points in the end wins the game.

9 Discuss these weather quotes.

The storm starts, when the drops start dropping; When the drops stop
dropping then the storm starts stopping.
Dr. Seuss

Everyone talks about the weather, but no one does anything about it.
Charles Dudley Warner

There’s no such thing as bad weather, just soft people.

You can’t get mad at weather because weather’s not about you.

10 Read this weather report and answer the questions.

Good evening. This is Mike Robbins with the weather forecast. It’s almost the weekend and a lot of people are
going away. But should they? We are going to look at the European weather forecast for Saturday.
Let’s start in England. It’s going to be wet and cloudy and you can expect a hurricane.
If you are tired of the rain, you can go to Italy. In Italy, there’s going to be a drought.
Denmark in the meantime is suffering its third blizzard of the year.
Many people predict there are going to be earthquakes in Spain this weekend, so that’s not the place to go to
either.
If you really want to leave the house, we suggest you visit France. It is going to be sunny with a temperature of
25 degrees Celsius over there.

What does this weather report give you? Is it talking about a plan, an intention?
Or is it a hope, a dream, a promise?

To express the opinion of the speaker about something.

It is going to rain. (I think it is going to rain, look at these clouds!)

4. Mouth gymnastics
Phrases and pauses (stress)
14 When listening to English, you may think it is difficult to understand because it goes too
fast. And perhaps you would like to speak faster. But people don’t speak fast and non-stop.
They speak in short phrases and they stop or pause in between the phrases. Listen to the
following story and mark the pauses with a “/”.

Britons spend six months/talking about weather/

You must talk/about how rainy May has been so far,/or how sunny April was before?/ You can't stop remarking /
on the coldest winter in years?/Do not worry./You are not alone./For Britons spend an average of six months of
their lives/talking about the weather. Lloyd TSB interviewed 2,000 people/and found they spent far longer talking
about the weather/than that other national obsession - football -/or trivial matters like one's job./Weather was
the most common subject/to break the ice when addressing strangers/or even at business meetings,/according
to the report./The weather changes every day,/so you have something new to talk about every morning./
source: Daily telegraph, 14 May 2010

Now practise reading the story aloud yourself. Make sure you pause!

Before you start

• Make sure you use the appropriate vocabulary talking about the weather.
• Make sure your plan is school specific.
• Make sure your plan appeals to the teachers.
• Make sure your plan appeals to the pupils.
• Make sure your plan is realistic.
• Make sure your plan can really change some things.

your classmates, your teachers and your school. What can all of you do to make the future
a little bit greener?

Your plan has to have at least ten different bullet points.

It has to appeal to pupils and teachers.
It has to be specific for your school.

After you finish

• Did you use the appropriate weather vocabulary?
• Is your plan school-specific?
• Does your plan appeal to the teachers?
• Does your plan appeal to the pupils?
• Is your plan realistic?
• What does your plan really change?

6. Did you know?

Celsius vs. Fahrenheit
In a weather forecast there are two ways to indicate the temperature:
4°C or 39°F

We always use Celsius to indicate the temperature, but a lot of English speaking countries use Fahrenheit.
0°C = 32 °F
100°C = 212°F
Formulae: y°F = (y-32) x 5/9°C
y°C = (y x 9/5) + 32 °F

21 Make correct combinations.

20°C 1832°F
35°C 14 °F
-10°C 68°F
1000°C 95°F

Look up the weather forecast for the next three days. What are the maximum and minimum
temperatures in Celsius and Fahrenheit?

Lemon tree - Fools Garden

I'm sitting here in the boring room

It's just another rainy Sunday afternoon
I'm wasting my time
I got nothing to do
I'm hanging around
I'm waiting for you
But nothing ever happens and I wonder

Unit 5 An Inconvenient Truth 303

I'm driving around in my car
I'm driving too fast
I'm driving too far
I'd like to change my point of view
I feel so lonely
I'm waiting for you
But nothing ever happens and I wonder
I wonder how
I wonder why
Yesterday you told me 'bout the blue blue sky
And all that I can see is just a yellow lemon-tree
I'm turning my head up and down
I'm turning turning turning turning turning around
And all that I can see is just another lemon-tree
I'm sitting here
I miss the power
I'd like to go out taking a shower
But there's a heavy cloud inside my head
I feel so tired
Put myself into bed
While nothing ever happens and I wonder
Isolation is not good for me
Isolation I don't want to sit on the lemon-tree
I'm steppin' around in the desert of joy
Baby anyhow I'll get another toy
And everything will happen and you wonder
I wonder how
I wonder why
Yesterday you told me 'bout the blue blue sky
And all that I can see is just another lemon-tree
I'm turning my head up and down
I'm turning turning turning turning turning around
And all that I can see is just a yellow lemon-tree
And I wonder, wonder
I wonder how
I wonder why
Yesterday you told me 'bout the blue blue sky
And all that I can see, and all that I can see, and all that I can see
Is just a yellow lemon-tree

62 You work in pairs and try to find out the jobs of your partner’s parents, asking questions
using the present continuous.
e.g. Is your father driving a car?
Is your mother working with a computer?
Is your mother talking to co-workers?

63 Do you believe in telepathy?

Your teacher will show you eight cards that picture actions (e.g. he is swimming). Make sure you know all the
actions pictured on the eight cards. Now the teacher shows one picture to one half of the class. They must
concentrate on it and send out telepathic signals about what the person in the picture is doing. The other half of
the class has three chances to receive the telepathic signals. Do they know what action is pictured on the card?

63 Play snakes and ladders. Your teacher will give you the game.
