Tonight, my father meets Jennifer Lawrence. His company Someone who is really loving his job …
won an award for the things they do to get a greener
planet. A project Jennifer Lawrence supports, apparently.
So I repeat: tonight, my father meets JENNIFER LAWRENCE!
And the thing he’s worried about most is the weather.
Because there's a barbecue planned and the weather
forecast predicts storm.
The thing I worry about the most is that I have to stay
home … Because my father has a job to do. It’s a hell of a
job, but someone‘s got to do it …
Izzy Ooooh … jealous! She’s such a great actress! The future of our transport: very interesting if you
And she seems to be such a great person too! worry about our eco system!

Brian is talking with his friend Amy from Yorkshire via Skype. You are Brian. Your partner is Amy.
Talk about the weather. Use the following structure.
Divide yourselves into groups. Take turns asking the question “What do
you do when it is … ?” followed by the different types of weather. If two of
you have matching answers (e.g. you both like to go to the beach when it is
sunny), you both get one point. Continue asking and answering questions
until you have read all your sentences. Whoever has the highest number of
points in the end wins the game.
The storm starts, when the drops start dropping; When the drops stop
dropping then the storm starts stopping.
Dr. Seuss
Everyone talks about the weather, but no one does anything about it.
Charles Dudley Warner
You can’t get mad at weather because weather’s not about you.
Apply that lesson to most other aspects of life.
Douglas Coupland
Good evening. This is Mike Robbins with the weather forecast. It’s almost the weekend and a lot of people are
going away. But should they? We are going to look at the European weather forecast for Saturday.
Let’s start in England. It’s going to be wet and cloudy and you can expect a hurricane.
If you are tired of the rain, you can go to Italy. In Italy, there’s going to be a drought.
Denmark in the meantime is suffering its third blizzard of the year.
Many people predict there are going to be earthquakes in Spain this weekend, so that’s not the place to go to
either.
If you really want to leave the house, we suggest you visit France. It is going to be sunny with a temperature of
25 degrees Celsius over there.
What does this weather report give you? Is it talking about a plan, an intention?
Or is it a hope, a dream, a promise?

Phrases and pauses (stress)
14 When listening to English, you may think it is difficult to understand because it goes too
fast. And perhaps you would like to speak faster. But people don’t speak fast and non-stop.
They speak in short phrases and they stop or pause in between the phrases. Listen to the
following story and mark the pauses with a “/”.
Now practise reading the story aloud yourself. Make sure you pause!
“Is it possible that we should prepare for other threats beside terrorists?” Explain.
We focus on the danger of terrorism, but there are other dangers. More pressing dangers.

Global Warming
As many people don’t believe that climate change can really kill us.
Comic 3: We prefer what is comforting. Even though that may be a lie.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Comic 4: Science backs up what Al Gore is saying. The facts show he is right. But not all people believe facts.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
We choose what we want to believe.
What does each comic tell you about the issues people have with An Inconvenient Truth?
They can’t stop talking about it, because they don’t really believe it’s happening.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
People only want to believe the truth of their own time, to be critical of something is not appreciated.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
What do all comics tell you about the problem of An Inconvenient Truth?
You have believers and non-believers. You need all people to really change things.

How much electricity did the data centre in the U.S. use last year?
✘ 3% of the total power consumption of the U.S.
✘ 70 billion kw
There wasn’t enough energy.
20 If we want to change global warming, we all have to change things. Work out a plan for you,
your classmates, your teachers and your school. What can all of you do to make the future
a little bit greener?
We always use Celsius to indicate the temperature, but a lot of English speaking countries use Fahrenheit.
0°C = 32 °F
100°C = 212°F
Formulae: y°F = (y-32) x 5/9°C
y°C = (y x 9/5) + 32 °F
20°C 1832°F
35°C 14 °F
-10°C 68°F
1000°C 95°F
Look up the weather forecast for the next three days. What are the maximum and minimum
temperatures in Celsius and Fahrenheit?

62 You work in pairs and try to find out the jobs of your partner’s parents, asking questions
using the present continuous.
e.g. Is your father driving a car?
Is your mother working with a computer?
Is your mother talking to co-workers?
Your teacher will show you eight cards that picture actions (e.g. he is swimming). Make sure you know all the
actions pictured on the eight cards. Now the teacher shows one picture to one half of the class. They must
concentrate on it and send out telepathic signals about what the person in the picture is doing. The other half of
the class has three chances to receive the telepathic signals. Do they know what action is pictured on the card?
63 Play snakes and ladders. Your teacher will give you the game.
Here’s to it!
The fighting sheen of it,
The yellow, the green of it,
The white, the blue of it,
The swing, the hue of it,
The dark, the red of it,
Every thread of it!
The fair have sighed for it,
The brave have died for it,
Foeman have sought for it,
Heroes fought for it,
Honour the name of it, Drink to the fame of it,
The Tartan!
What is “tartan“?
Make correct combinations. To what aspect of the tartan can these lines from the poem refer?
A The fair have sighed for it Black Tartan is a blended malt whisky created in
Edinburgh. Weaving together four premium malts, it is F
a scotch of singular quality.
B The brave have died for it The tartan is an ancient show of allegiance. Tartan
patterns were handed down from generation to D
generation.
C Foeman have sought for it A person who wears the crest of a clan of which he is
C
not a member, may be fined £8 6s 8d.
D Heroes fought for it An astronaut took his tartan to the moon and back.
E
E Honour the name of it One such myth is that red tartans were "battle
B
tartans", designed so they would not show blood.
Create a tartan for one of these people. What colours and pattern do you choose? Explain.
