How does Leonard try to cope with his condition? Does it work?

9 Listen to and read Leonard's thoughts on memory and answer the questions.
Memory’s not perfect. It’s not even that good. Ask the police, eyewitness testimony
is unreliable. The cops don’t catch a killer by sitting around remembering stuff.
They collect facts, make notes, draw conclusions. Facts, not memories: that’s how
you investigate. I know; it’s what I used to do. Memory can change the shape of a
room or the colour of a car. It’s an interpretation, not a record. Memories can be
changed or distorted and they’re irrelevant if you have the facts.
Discuss.
• Can facts be useful without memories, without a larger context to check and evaluate your information?
• Should Leonard trust his own notes? Is it possible for him to do anything if he has no trust?
• Leonard’s most recent memory will always be the one of his wife dying. Can you heal without time?
• If you could give Leonard one tattoo that would help solve all of his problems, what would it be?
• Do we manipulate our memories to be happy? Are we right to do so?

3. The basics
What do you like?
Question words you can use: what – why – where – how – who – when.
11 Fill in the question words. Then match the questions with the answers.

13 Make questions.
1) Where / sleep?
3) Why / laugh?
6) Who / love?
Work in groups of three. Answer these questions on a separate piece of paper. Now, your teammates have to
guess which answer matches which question.
You think you clearly remember something that never actually happened. Everybody can create false
memories, even people who have amazingly good memories.
Researchers showed volunteers images and asked them to imagine other images at the same time. Later, many
of the volunteers recalled the imagined images as real. If you vividly imagine something, it can leave a trace in
your brain similar to that of an event you actually experienced.
It is an interesting finding. Witnesses to crimes can think they saw something that has actually been suggested
to them later on. False childhood memories can be difficult to separate from actual ones, especially when they
are painful. Advertisers use false memories to make us want to buy.
a volunteer = een vrijwilliger / vividly = levendig / a trace = een spoor
• clue:
You think you clearly remember something that never actually happened.

• research:
• consequences:
Crime witnesses can think they saw something that has actually been suggested to them later on.

“Everybody can create false memories, even people who have amazingly good memories.”
Explain the meaning of memory in this sentence.
“Many of the volunteers recalled the imagined images as real.” Explain “imagined images”.
A woman goes into an ice cream parlour. She walks up to the man at the counter and says, “I’d like some
chocolate ice cream, please.”
“I’m sorry, madam,” says the man, “but I’m afraid we’re out of chocolate.”
“Oh,” says the woman. “In that case I’ll have some chocolate.”
So the man says, “No, no, madam. You don’t understand. We have run out of chocolate.”
“Oh,” replies the woman. “Then I’ll just have chocolate.”
The man behind the counter looks at the lady and says, “OK, spell “van”, as in “vanilla.”
So, the woman spells “V-A-N.”
“All right,” says the ice cream man, “spell “straw”, as in “strawberry.”
The woman says, “OK. S-T-R-A-W.”
“Good!” says the man. “Now spell “f”, in “chocolate.”
The woman looks at the man and says, “But there’s no “f” in “chocolate.”
The man shouts, “That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you, lady!!!”
5. The basics
There’s no “f” in chocolate

Close your eyes and test each other on the contents of the classroom.
Ask questions such as: How many chairs are there? Is there a green poster on the wall?
Now change things in your classroom while some students keep their eyes closed. Can they see the
differences?
e.g. There were four chairs, now there is only one chair.

Which one do you send to your mother / best friend / girlfriend / grandmother / teacher? Why?
1 2 3
4 5 6
Now, write a text to congratulate your best friend on his / her birthday.
6
In this step, you create the centre loop of your bow. Take the tail end that is on the front and create a
H backward loop with the tail end now going down over the top of the bow to the back.
7
To secure the bow, use a length of wire that is twisted around the back. Wire is ideal because it holds
E securely, but also allows you to move the loops around to spread out the bow when you’re ready to
fluff it.
2
Fold a length of ribbon backward to create a loop and pinch it with it your thumb. This loop will be the
G smallest (inside) loop on the left side of your bow. The tail of your bow will continue to hang down in
front.
4
Continue making loops on the back alternating from the left to the right. Remember that each loop
B should be a bit bigger than the one before it.
1
Hold the ribbon in your hand and leave a tail long enough to work as one end of your bow plus the
C length you’ll need for the centre loop. When in doubt, leave more! The tail should be in the front of
your hand.
8
Now you’re ready to fluff! For this, all you need to do is pull the loops alternating up and down so that
D each one is visible. I tend to like the biggest loops on the back to come down toward the tail of the
bow, as shown below.
5
When you have reached your desired size, you are ready to finish it off! The number of loops
A you create and the size of the loops will depend on the size you want for your finished bow, but
regardless, always use an odd number of loops on each side. Here you can see that I have five loops
per side going from smallest to biggest and one tail of the bow is on the front and the other (still
attached to the spool) is on the back.
3
Fold another loop backward on the other side that matches to the first loop in size. This will be your
F smallest (inside) loop on the right side of your bow, so you want the two sides to be even. Each loop
thereafter will get progressively bigger. You should now have two matching loops, one on the left and
one on the right. The tail is still hanging down in the front.

Uncle Sam is an interesting character. He is a colourful patriot on the one hand and on the other
hand a symbol of a violent and destructive superpower that sticks its nose in business that it has
no right to be in.
2
Most people recognise Uncle Sam from the World War I recruitment poster.
D
3
Uncle Sam has a violent history and is associated with war, so America decided to use him again
C during World War II. He represents millions of men and women who fought in WWII.
5
He got a big update as a mortal black man in New 52.
B

In that same period, Uncle Sam became a superhero in comic books. He is the spirit of a fallen
soldier from the American Revolution and pops up whenever his country needs him to fight.
1
Uncle Sam is a walking symbol of America. He became “the American people and government”
A during the war of 1812. According to legend, the character of Uncle Sam is based on the real
Samuel Wilson, a meat packer from New York and a fervent American patriot. He stamped the
initials “U.S.” on barrels of meat he sold to the army in the war of 1812, it became a joke to say
these initials stood for Uncle Sam instead of United States.
