CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

A. Background
English is the international language. By mastering English
well, we will be able to communicate with other languages in this
world. Besides that, we can also add to our insights and knowledge
for the betterment of our nation and country, because we can read
English literature, listen to foreign radio broadcasts, and watch
other scientific films. Thus, we can eventually master knowledge
from all fields.
In addition to increasing understanding of international
languages, by learning English this will at least make it easier for
us to get a decent job, or for our provision in the future. Studying
an international language properly and correctly, of course, has
very good benefits for all of us.
For this reason, it is necessary to understand the grammar in
English first. In addition to facilitating pronunciation, we will also
understand how to arrange the words to be spoken so that they
become one coherent and correct sentence according to tenses.

CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION

A. Present Continuous Tense

1. Definition of Present Continuous Tense
Present continuous tense is a form of tense that is used to
describe activities that are being carried out or are taking place
at this time or now (present).
This tense is also known as the Present Progressive
Tense. Progressive here has the same meaning as continuous,
which can be interpreted as continuous, repeated or currently
happening. In essence, the present continuous tense functions to
show an activity or condition that is happening now, occurs
frequently, and can be carried out or continued into the future.
To better imagine, try to look at examples of sentences in the
present continuous tense based on the situation.
1. A situation where an incident is taking place right now.
Example: Mr. Mandala is making dinner right now.
2. A situation in which an event is planned with certainty to
occur in the future.
Example : The event is starting next week.

2. Pattern Present Continuous Tense

The present continuous tense is formed using a subject +
an auxiliary verb, namely be in the form am/are/is + verb-ing +
complement or complement.
a) Present Continuous Tense Positive Sentences
The subject in a sentence is usually a pronoun or a noun.
There are 3 types of pronouns based on their point of view,
namely, first person: I (I/me) and we (we/us). Second
person: you (you/you), Third person: she/he/it and they. and
there are 2 types of pronouns and nouns based on the
number. Namely singular (single) and plural (plural). In
first person, I is the singular and we is the plural. In third
person, she/he/it is singular and they are plural. Whereas in
the second person, both singular and plural forms are you.
The meaning of you as "you", and you as "you", is adjusted
to the context.
The pattern is : Subject + be (am/is/are) + verb (-ing) + …
For example :
1. I am watching Netflix.
2. Andini is riding a bicycle.
3. They are dancing in the rain.
b) Present Continuous Tense Negative Sentences
The main characteristic of this sentence form is the word
not which is located between be and verb-ing. So, the form
is subject + am/are/is + not + Verb-ing + Complement. To
make it easier for us to use the same example sentences as
the positive Present Continuous Tense sentences above.
For example :
1. I am not watching Netflix.
2. Andini is not riding a bicycle.
3. They are not dancing in the rain.
c) Present Continuous Tense Interrogative Sentences
There are two types of interrogative sentences or
interrogative sentences, namely yes/no questions and WH
questions.
a. Interrogative Yes/No Question
For questions with yes/no answers, you can directly
write be (am/are/is) followed by subject and verb-ing at
the beginning of the sentence. So, the pattern is be
(am/are/is) + subject + verb1 -ing + complement.
For example:
Am I watching Netflix?
Is Andini riding a bicycle?
Are they dancing in the rain?
b. WH Question
WH questions are what, who, where, when, why, and
how. So, to answer the WH question, put the WH
question at the beginning of the sentence before be,
followed by Subject and Verb-ing + Complement.
However, in this type of interrogative sentence, the
complement is optional, yes. So, may or may not exist.
For example:
What am I watching?
What is Andini riding?
Where are they dancing?
B. Past Continuous Tense
1. Definition of Past Continuous Tense
Past continuous tense is a tense to express an event or
incident that was happening in the past (past) during a certain
time.
This form of tenses indicates that an action may have
occurred before (began before), during (was in progress during),
and may have continued after (continued after) there were other
actions in the past.
So, the past continuous tense is a form of sentence that is
interrupted by other events and can also be combined with other
events at the same time.

2. Pattern Past Continuous Tense

Because the Past Continuous Tense shows things in the
past, so the be used must also be in the past form, namely was
and were.
Was is used for I, He, She, It, and Singular Subjects.
Were is used for You, They, We, and Plural Subject.
The pattern is :
(+) S + be (was/were) + Verb (-ing) + Complement
(-) S + be (was/were) + Not + Verb (-ing) + Complement
(?) Be (was/were) + S + Verb (-ing) + Complement ?
Examples:
(+) He was traveling to Venice.
(+) She was eating a burger.
(-) He wasn't sleeping.
(-) The people weren't waiting.
(?) Was he buying a book?
(?) Were the people playing tennis?

C. Future Tense
1. Definition of future tense
Tenses are a form of a sentence to describe an event from
a predicate with time. To describe future events, English
speakers use the Future Tense. So that the Future Tense is used
in sentences relating to an event in the future.
2. Types of Future Tense
In its use, the Future Tense is divided into four types.
a) Simple Future Tense
The Simple Future Tense is used to express an event that
will occur in the future. namely be in the form subject +
will/shall+V1+object.
Adverbs of time that are often used, namely:
tomorrow = tomorrow
the day after tomorrow = the day after tomorrow
next week = next week
next month = next month
next year = next year
b) Future Continuous Tense
Future Continuous Tense is used to express an event that
will occur or be carried out at a certain time in the future
namely be in the form subject+will/shall+be+verb ing.
Adverbs of time are used.
for example:
at 3 p.m tomorrow = at 3 pm tomorrow
Example of sentences:
(+) She will be dining here at 9 p.m tomorrow
(-) She won't be dining here at 9 p.m tomorrow
(?) Will she be dining here at 9 p.m tomorrow? (Will he
have dinner here at 9 tomorrow?)
c) Future Perfect Tense
Future Perfect tense is used to express an event that will be
completed in the future namely be in the form subject+will
have/shall have+V3+object.
Adverbs of time that are often used, usually:
by this time next year = at this time next year
by the end of this year = at the end of this year
Also read: Types of Tense
Example of sentences:
(+) I will have written a novel by the time I reach 30
(-) I won't have written a novel by the time I reached 30
(?) Will you have written a novel by the time you reach 30?
d) Future Perfect Continuous Tense
Future Perfect Continuous Tense is used to express an
action or event that has been going on for some time when
another event occurs, in the future namely be in the form
subject+will have been/shall have been+Verb-ing+object.
Adverb of time used, usually:
by this time = at this hour
Example sentences:
(+) She will have been married for 3 years by the time I
come home
(-) She will not have been married for 3 years by the time I
come home
(?) Will she have been married for 3 years by the time I
come home? (will he be married for 3 years when I come
back?)

D. Future Continuous Tense

1. Definition of the future continuous tense
future continuous tense is a combination of simple future
tense and continuous tense. Future continuous tense is a form
of the verb to express events that are taking place in the future
or at a time that will come with a specific time description, aka
sentences that use this tense have a duration of time.
2. Pattern Future Continuous Tense
Actually, this tense formula is not much different from
the simple future tense. However, you need to note that in the
future continuous tense formula there are several additional
components. The following are sentence patterns and future
continuous tense pattern:
Positive Sentences (+): Subject + will + be + verb-ing +
complement.
Examples:
(+) Rama will be running in a marathon race this Saturday
morning.
(+) He will be staying at the office at 4 o'clock this afternoon.
(+) I will be doing an exam at this time tomorrow.

Negative Sentences (-): Subject + will + not + be + verb-ing +

complement.
Examples:
(-) I won't be sleeping at this time tomorrow.
(-) Bima will not be playing games for a month
(-) My brother will not be practicing football tonight at eight
o'clock.

Interrogative Sentences (?): Will + S + be + verb-ing +

complement
Examples :
(?) Will you be coming to Susi's birthday party tomorrow
night?
(?) Will he be sleeping in this room?
(?) Will they be calling you tomorrow night?

E. Future To Be Going To
1. Definition to be going to
"To be going" usually refers to the state of preparing to
leave a place or taking a journey. It indicates that someone is
getting ready to depart or is in the process of leaving.
2. Pattern Future To Be Going To
The phrase "to be going" doesn't really have a specific
formula or pattern, as it's a grammatical construct in English.
It's formed using the present continuous tense of the verb "to
go," which is "going."
For example:
1. I am going to the store.
2. She is going to the party.
3. They are going on vacation.

The structure is: subject + am/is/are + going + infinitive verb

(to go).
BAB III
CLOSING

The discussion on tense 1 highlights the importance of verb

tenses in conveying the timing of actions and events in English. Tense
1, also known as the present simple tense, is used to describe actions
that are habitual, general truths, or routine occurrences. It is
characterized by its straightforward structure, using the base form of
the verb for all subjects and the addition of "s" or "es" for third-person
singular subjects. Understanding tense 1 enables effective
communication and precise temporal context in various situations.
The present continuous tense captures ongoing actions or events
happening at the moment of speaking or around the present time. It
employs the present tense of the verb "to be" and the "-ing" form of
the main verb.
The past continuous tense depicts actions that were ongoing in
the past, emphasizing their duration or interruption. It employs the
past tense of "to be" and the "-ing" form of the main verb.
The future tense indicates actions or events that will occur after
the present moment. It uses modal verbs like "will" or "shall"
combined with the base form of the main verb.
The future continuous tense portrays actions that will be in
progress at a specific point in the future. It combines "will be" with
the "-ing" form of the main verb.
Mastering these tenses allows us to communicate with accuracy
and clarity, enabling the description of actions across different times,
durations, and circumstances. Each tense adds a unique dimension to
our language, enhancing our ability to convey a wide array of
information effectively.
