Agreement of Verb and Subject

In today’s lesson, we will discuss the concept of subject-verb agreement. In


simple words, the subject must agree with the involved verb in terms of number.
The concept has been explained in detail in the current lesson. The rules to be

Subject Verb

The subject is Singular The verb should be Singular

The subject is Plural The verb should be Plural

First-person- I/You I go, I walk, I talk (Plural verb)

Third-person singular- He/She He goes, he walks, he talks (Singular verb)

Third-person plural- They They go, dogs walk, people talk (Plural Verb)

• If the subject is singular, the verbs should be also singular.


For example, Ramu goes to the museum.
• If the subject is in the plural form, the verb should also be plural.
For example, Children go to the museum.

• If the subject is in the plural but is represented by a unit or a single figure.


In this case, it is considered a singular verb.
For example, a thousand steps is a great achievement.
• If the subject of the sentence consists of two or more nouns or pronouns
connected by the conjunction, and. The plural verbs have to be used for
such subjects.
For example, the teachers and the parents connect every day.
• If the sentence consists of two or more singular nouns or pronouns and is
connected by "or" or "nor," then a singular verb has to be used.
For example, the teacher or guide agrees with the curriculum.
• If the sentence consists of the words, "each" "each one" "somebody"
"someone" and "no one" "either" "neither" "everyone" "everybody"
"anybody", and "nobody" singular verbs has to be used, as these are
singular.
For example, everyone gets excited about the excursion.
• If the uncountable words are present, they have to be considered as
singular and singular verbs are to be used.
For example, mental health is the key to a happy life.

The subject-verb agreement usage is very crucial for the structuring of the
sentence. It is of utmost importance we follow the rules that are to be followed
while using a subject and a verb. This makes it easier for the reader to
understand the meaning one is trying to convey. Even with a few exceptions for
the first person and third person usage in the sentence one can clearly
differentiate and understand the usage of plural and singular verb respectively.
