EARHART
The first woman to fly solo across the atlantic
BACKSTORY
Earhart's mother was from a wealthy family, and her father worked
as a railroad lawyer. Even as a young child, Amelia Earhart showed
the independent spirit and spirit of adventure for which she would
later be recognized. Her father was an alcoholic, and the family had
financial difficulties following the passing of her grandparents. The
Earharts relocated frequently, and in 1916 she graduated from high
school in Chicago. Earhart was allowed to attend the Ogontz School
in Rydal, Pennsylvania, following her mother's inheritance. But while
visiting her sister in Canada, Amelia became interested in providing
care for World War I troops who had been injured. She dropped out
of junior college in 1918 to work as a Toronto nurse's assistant.
Earhart had her hair cut short and was dressed like a man.
She also owned her own clothing brand,
Amelia Earhart Fashions, although this is a little-known fact.
In addition to dresses, Earhart's range of clothing also
included women's blouses, shirts, suits, and slacks.
