1.

(a) For complex numbers z1 = 7 + i and z2 = 4 − 3i, calculate

3z2
z1 z2 − ,
z1
(where z2 denotes the complex conjugate of z2 ). Write your answer in standard Cartesian form
z = a + bi, where a and b are real numbers.
[5 marks]

(b) For each of the following complex numbers z, calculate the modulus |z| and the principal value
of the argument arg(z). Hence in each case write z in polar form.

(i) z = −5 + 5i.

(ii) z = 1 − 3i.

[6 marks]

(c) Find the cubic polynomial f (x) = x3 + αx2 + βx + γ with real constant coefficients α, β and
γ, two of the roots of which are 1 + 3i and 4.
[3 marks]

2.

(a) Find the equation of the line perpendicular to the line y = 7 − 5x and which passes through
the point P with coordinates (10, 3).
[2 marks]

(b) Find the two points of intersection of the circles

x2 + 6x + y 2 − 2y = 90,
x2 − 36x + y 2 − 2y = −36.

3. I have a bag of change made up of 1p, 2p and 5p coins that adds up to exactly £3. I have 144
coins in total, and twice as many 2p coins as 5p coins. How many of each denomination do I have?

B= 4 1 0 .
0 −2 −5

(a) Calculate the difference A − B.

[1 marks]

(b) Calculate the product BA.

[2 marks]

(c) Calculate the determinant of B.

5. A tank leaks at a rate proportionate to the square root of the depth of the water in it. Write
down a differential equation describing the rate of change at time t hours of the depth h(t).
Given that at t = 0 the depth is 81 cm and that after 4 hours it is 9 cm, find an algebraic
expression relating h and t. Also determine when the tank empties completely.
