)), calculate
w z
wz, z and w . Express your answers in polar form with the principal value for the argument.

(b) Let u = − 3 − i. By writing u in polar form, or otherwise, find u3 .
[3 marks]

(c) Find a cubic polynomial f (x), with real coefficients and highest order term x3 , such that
f (x) = 0 for x = 5 − 2i and x = 3.
[3 marks]

2.

(a) The line y = mx + c, where m and c are constants, passes through the point P with coordinates
(1, 3) and the point Q with coordinates (4, −6). Find m and c, as well as the length of the
segment between P and the point where the line crosses the y-axis.
[2 marks]

(b) Given that a circle passes through the points (−16, 6), (−9, 13) and (14, −10), find its equation
in the form
(x − a)2 + (y − b)2 = r2 ,
where the centre is at coordinates (a, b) and the radius is r.

3. I receive 13 pence for returning a large bottle to a shop, 10 pence for returning a medium size
bottle and 7 pence for each small bottle I return. I hand back 10 bottles in total for which I receive
91 pence. I return twice as many small bottles as large ones. How many of each sort do I return?
