Common disease of the GIT
❑1. Peptic ulcers (P.U) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
❑2. Vomiting.
❑3. Diarrhea.
❑4. Constipation.
Peptic ulcers and gastro
esophageal reflux disease:
Causative factors for peptic ulcer are:
5. tumors (rare).
Treatment approaches for peptic
ulcers:
1. Eradication of the H. pylori infection.
2. Reducing the secretion of gastric acid with the use of proton pump
inhibitors (PPIs) or H2-receptor antagonists.
3. Protection the gastric mucosa from damage by using agents like misoprostol
and sucralfate.
❑ Gastro esophageal reflex disease (GERD) which has a heart burn like
sensation is not associated with H. pylori infection and does not require
treatment with antibiotics
2. H2-receptor antagonists:
❑Gastric acid secretion by parietal cells of the gastric mucosa is stimulated
by acetylcholine, histamine, and gastrin.
