THE CONCEPT ‘ALCOHOLISM’
• Taking alcohol is an ideology.
• A part and parcel of the concept of Drug
Abuse.
• Always an uncontrolled and unguided
behavior.
• Repetitive in nature; resolution lies in de-
addiction strategies.

• It makes one feel ‘abnormal’ without
consuming alcohol.
• Synonyms which are used are alcohol
abuse; alcohol dependence; alcohol
disorder.
• It is usually a psychological condition
reflected through social and physical
behavior patterns.

FACTORS/REASONS
• Family culture and tradition goes invariably
uncontrolled and triggered by external factors.
• Withdrawal (social , cultural, psychological
and the like).
• Financial inability: a vicious circle since it
needs more spending and may lead to mental
issues like depression, anxiety and finally drug
abuse and the like (unemployment and the
like).

• Stress buster; for relieving stress. Specially in
case of cooping with the losses and the like
situations.
• Other traumas which form concept of Social
or Psychological Pathology.
• Social Exclusion (egoist disorders).
• Excess of Social Inclusion (altruism).
• Peer group pressure or factor.

• Illiteracy and ignorance: not well explained
about impacts of consuming alcohol with no
limits.
• Undue availability of alcohol: accessibility.
• Weak social engineering and weak
socialization.
• Lack of institutional control on an individual’s
priority making abilities.

REPERCUSSIONS
• Physical: health issues and organ failure, reproductive
abilities and the like.
• Social: trust deficit bye society and lack of faith by
family members; avoidance in case of giving
responsibilities.
• Financial and Economic: income earning gets affected
and further in later stages of life, income earned gets
misused.
• Adverse impacts on mental health: dependent
behaviour starts perpetuating and aggravating leading
to social mal-adjustment and mal-adaptation.

• Domestic violence: marital and non-marital as
well.
• Social offences within and outside the familial or
domestic set ups.
• Distortion of marital relationships and impact on
kinship sanctity.
• Misuse for criminal or other activities : the crime
record shows that many crimes are done under
influence of alcohol and for the addiction
satisfaction of the same.

RESOLUTION/ CONTROL MECHANIMS
• De-addiction and psychiatric treatment for the
alcoholics (counseling and discussion including
outburst of addicts).
• Self help (no stocking; no emotional drinking;
developing socially instigated drinking habit;
healthy living including exercise and the like.
• Treatment for depression and other mental
disorders.
• Approaching self help groups and social activists:
anyone, one has faith in.
