Introduction
For the following multiple choice questions, highlight the best answer.

1. How did atoms of Magnesium (Mg) form?

a) The Big Bang c) Dying High Mass Stars

b) Merging Neutron Stars d) Human-made

2. How did atoms of nobelium (No) form?

e) The Big Bang g) White Dwarf Supernova

f) Merging Neutron Stars a) Human-made

3. How did atoms of silver (Ag) form?

h) Dying High Mass Stars j) White Dwarf Supernova

i) Merging Neutron Stars k) Human-made

For each of the elements listed below, explain how it was formed. Use the provided

4. Carbon is an important element for life on Earth. It is the basis for the food
that gives us energy, the structure of our skin, fat, and muscles, and is
responsible for many of the chemical reactions in our bodies. Also, diamonds
are made of carbon as well! Where do atoms of carbon form?

Dying low mass stars

5. Did you know that the symbol for gold, Au, refers to the Latin word aurum, which means
“shining dawn” or “glow of sunrise”? How does gold form?
Merging neutron stars

6. The above images show materials that have been chromium- coated (left) and zinc-coated
(right). Chromium (Cr) and Zinc (Zn) are both elements. Were both of these elements formed
in the same way? How were each of them formed? Explain how you know.

Chromium was made of white dwarf supernovae and zinc too. So yes, they were formed the
same way. I know this because of the NASA table of origins of elements.

7. The quote, by Carl Sagan, at the start of this article is quite famous: "The nitrogen in our
DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in
the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of star stuff." What does it mean, that “we are
made of star stuff”? Explain the quote in your own words.

It means that ‘we’ and the planet are all made of matter/star stuff.
