Ultrasound Service

SCAN PREPARATION INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS

(1) MSK or Testes - No preparation is required.

(2) Abdomen Ultrasound Scan PREPARATION:

Please DO NOT eat or drink anything (other than water) for 6 hours before your scan
appointment.

*If you are diabetic and need to treat a low blood sugar event, please treat with
glucose tablets. If you must eat to correct a hypoglycaemic event – the food must be
low fat, avoiding dairy products such as milk, cheese, and cream.

(3) Renal (Kidneys and Bladder) Ultrasound Scan PREPARATION:

Please finish 2 pints of water 1 hour before your scan appointment time and do not
go to the toilet until after the scan. We need your bladder full.

If you are concerned about timing and think you are unable to hold your bladder for
that long, please try and drink 2 pints of water 30 minutes before your appointment.

(4) Pelvic Ultrasound Scan PREPARATION:

Please finish 2 pints of water 1 hour before your scan appointment time and do not
go to the toilet until after the scan. We need your bladder full.

If you are concerned about timing and think you are unable to hold your bladder for
that long, please try and drink 2 pints of water 30 minutes before your appointment.

There is a possibility that your examination will include a transvaginal (internal) scan.
The sonographer will discuss this with you if it is needed. You will be able to empty
your bladder before that part of the scan.

*If you currently have light bleeding/spotting/discharge – this will not affect the scan.

*If you are currently having heavy bleeding/flooding/clots – we might need to


reschedule the internal part of the exam. It is still advised for you to attend the
appointment given. If this makes you uncomfortable, please ring us in advance and
we can reschedule to a more appropriate time.

MEDICATION: If you need to take medication, please take as normal with


water ONLY
