Q1.In terms of analyzing the time that I spent on various activities, especially distinguishing
between my essential tasks and my leisure activities, is crucial in understanding how we
allocate our time and prioritize different aspects of our lives. In this analysis of my time being
spent, I will delve into the breakdown of time spent on my essential activities and my leisure
pursuits over my four-day period, which are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday,
identifying trends, patterns, and activities that blur the lines between my university work study
and leisure.
In terms of the time allocation analysis, the essential activities include:
1. Sleeping: On average, individuals require 7-9 hours of sleep per night for optimal health and
well-being, and for me personally my time or the amount of hours that I sleep at night is about 8
to 9 hours exactly. With that, tracking my sleep patterns can and will provide me with some
insights into my overall health and productivity as well.
9 Pharoun

2. Waking Up: The time that it takes to wake up, get ready for the day, and establish a morning
routine is essential for setting a positive tone for the day ahead. It takes me about 3 hours at
most or less.
3. Making Food: for my meal preparation and consumption are vital for nourishment and energy
levels throughout the day. Preparing my breakfast and lunch for the day would take about 15 -
20 minutes at the most, depending on what kind of food I would make or prepare.
4. Attending Events/Occasions: social engagements and events contribute to personal
connections and well-being. To attend events/occasions would take me about 1 to 2 hours to get
and arrive at least before it starts.
5. Gym/Workout: physical exercise is crucial for maintaining physical health and mental
well-being. To start and finish my workout, would take about 3 to 4 hours depending on my
schedule.
6. Personal Care: activities such as grooming, hygiene, and self-care are essential for overall
wellness. To do/ start and finish my care would take about 1 to 2 hours at the most.
7. University Lecture Classes: attending classes is fundamental to academic success and
knowledge acquisition. To attend from the start and finish my lecture courses on time would take
about 3 or 4 hours at the most.
8. Homework at the Library: study time and completing assignments are integral parts of the
academic journey. To get to the library would take about 1 to 2 hours depending on the traffic on
the road and construction as well. To start my homework would take about 10 or 15 minutes to
get it out, then start and finish right away.
On the other hand, my leisure activities include:
1. Checking Phone & Social Media: engaging with social media platforms like Snapchat and
Instagram can and would be a leisure activity, but may also blur the lines between my university
study work and leisure due to the potential for social networking or content creation. To check
my social media platforms would take about 1 to 2 hours at the most or less.
2. Identifying my Leisure Time Activities: In terms of leisure activities are those pursued for
enjoyment, relaxation, and personal fulfillment. Examples would include hobbies, recreational
activities, socializing with friends, watching movies, reading for pleasure, or engaging in creative
pursuits. However, the actual examples of my leisure activities are checking my phone & social
media platforms, going to events & occasions, doing my workout at the gym, waking up and
playing with my cat, arriving home, making food, eating while watching TV, doing homework in
the university library, going and participating in lecture classes, brushing my teeth, and washing
my face, in other words doing personal/ self-care, putting on pajamas, getting super tired, and
lastly going to bed.
In terms of the trends and patterns in my leisure activities include:
1. Sleeping Patterns: Analyzing the duration and quality of sleep my can reveal trends, such as
irregular sleep schedules, sleep disturbances, or sleep deprivation.
2. Technology Use: Monitoring the time that I spend on social media can highlight potential time
sinks and opportunities for more meaningful leisure activities.
3. Balancing Work and Leisure: Identifying activities that straddle the line between my university
study work and leisure can help me in creating a more balanced lifestyle.
Finally, examples of difficult-to-define activities are:
10 Pharoun

1. Social Media Use: While checking social media can be a leisure activity, it may also involve
elements of networking, personal branding, or information consumption that blur the boundaries
between my university study work and my leisure activities.
2. Personal Development: Engaging in my activities like checking my phone & social media
platforms, going to events & occasions, doing my workout at the gym, waking up and playing
with my cat, arriving home, making food, eating while watching TV, doing homework in the
university library, going and participating in lecture classes, brushing my teeth, and washing my
face, in other words doing personal/ self-care, putting on pajamas, getting super tired, and lastly
going to bed.
These activities of mine can be both leisure pursuits and investments in my personal growth. In
conclusion, understanding how my time is allocated between my essential activities and my
leisure pursuits is very essential for achieving a balanced and fulfilling lifestyle. Tracking and
analyzing the time that I spend on various tasks, can make and help me be or have informed
decisions about prioritizing my activities that contribute to my well-being and personal
development as a whole.
Q2. 2a)
In terms of analyzing a person's leisure patterns can provide valuable insights into how time is
spent and the underlying motivations behind various leisure activities. In this case, I have listed
a range of leisure activities that encompass different aspects of daily life. Each aspect of the
leisure activities will be mentioned and evaluated based on various criteria, such as group or
individual nature, motivation, indoor or outdoor setting, cost, activity level, equipment or facilities
required, longevity, and trends observed.

Group or individual activities include:

1. Sleeping: this leisure activity is typically individual and self-motivated, occurring in an indoor
setting. It is very essential for overall well-being and can be considered a passive activity.
2. Waking Up: while waking up can be an individual activity, it is often influenced by external
factors such as alarms or schedules. It is also self-motivated and usually occurs indoors.
3. Making Food: this leisure activity can be done both individually and group-oriented,
depending on whether a person is cooking for oneself or others. It is also self-motivated, and
indoor, and can vary in cost and activity level.
4. Going Out on Events or Occasions: this leisure activity is often group-oriented, driven by
external factors, and can be both indoor and outdoor. It may range from inexpensive to
expensive based on the nature of the event.
5. Going to the Gym for a Workout: typically, this is an individual activity, self-motivated, indoor,
and may require equipment and facilities as well. It is an active pursuit that can be both
inexpensive (bodyweight exercises) and costly (gym memberships).
6. Personal Care: this leisure activity is individual, self-motivated, and indoor. It may involve
various self-care routines and can vary in cost and activity level.
7. Attending University Lecture Classes: this leisure activity is a group activity, externally
motivated by academic requirements, indoor, and may require specific facilities. It is an active
engagement that contributes to personal growth.
11 Pharoun

8. Doing Homework at the University Library: This is an Individual leisure activity, externally
motivated by academic obligations, indoor, and requires specific facilities. It is an active pursuit
that contributes to learning.
9. Checking Phone and Social Media: This is an Individual leisure activity, self-motivated, indoor,
and can be both passive and active. It may or may not require equipment and is often a low-cost
or free activity.
On the other hand, the longevity and trends are:
● Lifetime Leisure Activities: Leisure Activities like personal care, attending university
classes, and engaging in physical exercise at the gym are sustainable for a lifetime and
contribute positively to overall well-being.
● Trends: A noticeable trend is the reliance on digital leisure activities such as checking
social media, which can impact mood and leisure satisfaction. Balancing screen time
with other activities is essential for overall well-being.
For my mood determination and leisure classification:
● For My Mood: my mood during these leisure activities can vary. For instance, attending
university classes may evoke feelings of productivity and learning, while excessive social
media use might lead to feelings of distraction or comparison.
● Leisure Classification: my leisure activities are subjective and can be classified based on
my enjoyment and relaxation. While some leisure activities like going to the gym may be
considered leisure, others like attending classes or doing homework may be viewed as
necessary tasks rather than pure leisure pursuits. In conclusion, analyzing my leisure
patterns can help me understand how I allocate my time, the motivations driving my
activities, and the impact of my leisure activities on my well-being. By considering factors
such as group dynamics, motivation, setting, cost, activity level, equipment needs,
longevity, and trends, I can make informed choices to enhance my leisure experiences
and the overall quality of my life as a whole.
Q2. 2b)
When considering the personal electronic media use of a person, it is essential to reflect on the
various activities that encompass this category. This includes music listening, cell phone use,
computer activities, internet browsing, electronic gaming, and television viewing. To provide a
comprehensive overview of electronic media usage, it is important to compile the duration of
time spent engaging in these activities and categorize them based on personal preferences or
patterns of the person. Additionally, quantifying the frequency of accessing electronic media can
offer insights into each individual's habits and behaviors.
Duration of Electronic Media Usage: In compiling the duration of electronic media usage, I can
calculate the total time that I spent on each activity and express it as a fraction of the overall
time spent engaging with electronic media. For example, I would spend 3 hours listening to
music, 2 hours on social media, and 1 hour playing electronic games in a day, and the total
duration of electronic media usage would be 6 hours. This will be represented as 3/6 for music
listening, 2/6 for social media, and 1/6 for gaming.
Categorization of Electronic Media Usage: Electronic media usage can be categorized in
various ways based on individual preferences or habits. With that, two possible categorization
methods could be based on the type of activity (e.g., passive consumption vs. interactive
engagement) or the device used (e.g., mobile devices vs. desktop/laptop). By categorizing
12 Pharoun

electronic media usage, I have gained insights into how time is allocated across different types
of activities or devices.
Frequency of Accessing Electronic Media: To quantify the frequency of accessing electronic
media, a person or individual can compile the number of times various activities are performed
in a given period. This can include sending or receiving texts, making phone calls, browsing the
internet, watching TV, or engaging with social media platforms like Snapchat and Instagram. By
tracking the number of times electronic media is accessed, I have gained a better understanding
of my usage patterns and behaviors.
In conclusion, understanding my personal electronic media use is crucial in today's digital age.
By compiling the duration of time spent on electronic media activities, categorizing usage
patterns, and quantifying the frequency of access, I have gained many valuable insights into my
leisure habits and behaviors. This information can and will help me in making informed
decisions about balancing electronic media consumption with other recreational activities and
responsibilities.
Q3.
During these days, there are several leisure activities that I commonly engage in but have not
been able to pursue. The three activities that I have not been able to participate in recently are
hiking, attending live music events, and not traveling as much. Each of these activities holds a
special place in my heart, but due to my super busy schedule, I have had to put them on hold.
● Hiking: Hiking is a recreational activity that I thoroughly enjoy. It allows me to connect
with nature, stay active, and clear my mind from the stresses of daily life. However,
during these days, I have not been able to go hiking as frequently as I used to. The main
reason for this is the restrictions imposed due to my super busy schedule, such as going
to university lecture classes and doing gym workouts. Some hiking trails and parks have
been closed or have limited access to the public due to the weather, especially now
winter is not over yet. Additionally, I still have the fear of contracting the virus while being
near others on popular trails has deterred me from pursuing this activity, even though the
pandemic is over.
● Live Music Concert Events: Attending live music concert events is another leisure
activity that I love. The energy and the positive vibe of a live concert performance, the
camaraderie of fellow music enthusiasts, and the overall experience of being in a concert
venue are unmatched. Unfortunately, due to my busy schedule, I barely go to the live
concerts of my favorite artists.
● Traveling: Traveling is a passion of mine that I adore and love the most, and I often seek
opportunities to explore new destinations, immerse myself in different cultures, and
create long-lasting memories. However, the current situation that is happening nowadays
with the unrest in the Middle East has made it hard to choose whether I want to go to the
Middle East or somewhere else. At different times of the year or when my university
patterns are not the same as the present, my 'time occupation pattern' would be
significantly different. For instance:
● 1. Summer Vacation Break: During the summer break when I have more free time, I
would typically engage in more outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and
swimming. I would also use this time specifically to travel to new destinations that are on
my bucket list and explore different cultures as well. Live music events, festivals, and
13 Pharoun

concerts of my favourite artists are also common during the summer months, and I
would make an effort to attend as many as possible I can.
● 2. University Schedule: When my university schedule is in full swing, my leisure activities
are often limited or are on hold for a while to weekends, evenings days off, or even long
breaks as well. I would dedicate time to socializing with friends, attending local events,
and concerts, or participating in sports or fitness classes. Balancing academic
responsibilities with leisure pursuits becomes crucial during the school year.

In conclusion, the current circumstances have forced me to adapt my leisure activities and 'time
occupation pattern' to align with the restrictions and challenges posed by my super busy
schedule. As my schedule evolves, I look forward to resuming these activities and embracing a
more diverse and fulfilling leisure routine.
Q4.
To effectively address the question, we first need to define leisure and understand its
significance in contemporary society. Leisure can be defined as the time spent in non-obligatory
activities that individuals choose to engage in for relaxation, enjoyment, and personal
development. It is a crucial aspect of human life that allows individuals to rejuvenate, pursue
hobbies, socialize, and enhance their overall well-being. The study of leisure is important as it
provides insights into how individuals allocate their time, the impact of leisure activities on
mental and physical health, and the role of leisure in shaping societal norms and values. In
contemporary society, leisure has evolved to encompass a wide range of activities, from
traditional hobbies like reading and gardening to modern forms of leisure such as
binge-watching TV shows and engaging in social media. The concept of leisure is deeply
personal, as individuals have unique preferences and interests that influence how they choose
to spend their leisure time. Understanding one's definition of leisure is essential in identifying
activities that bring joy, fulfillment, and relaxation. Operationalizing the concept of leisure
involves aligning one's definition of leisure with the activities they engage in. By keeping a time
diary that records activities in half-hour intervals, individuals can gain insights into how they
allocate their time and whether these activities align with their definition of leisure. This process
allows for a critical examination of how leisure is integrated into our daily routines and how it
contributes to our overall well-being. In my definition of leisure, I view it as any activity that
brings me joy, relaxation, and personal growth. The two examples of leisure activities that
operationalize this definition are reading and hiking. Reading allows me to escape into different
worlds, learn new things, and relax after a long day. It aligns with my definition of leisure as it
brings me joy and contributes to my personal development. Hiking, on the other hand, provides
me with a sense of adventure, physical exercise, and a connection to nature. It allows me to
unwind, recharge, and appreciate the beauty of the outdoors, fulfilling my need for relaxation
and personal growth. Linking these examples to the concept of recreation and leisure in
contemporary society, it is evident that individuals have a diverse range of leisure activities to
choose from. The rise of digital technology has expanded the options for leisure, with activities
such as online gaming, social media engagement, and virtual experiences becoming
increasingly popular. While these activities offer convenience and entertainment, they also raise
questions about the impact of screen time on mental health, social interactions, and overall
well-being. Moreover, the concept of leisure in contemporary society is influenced by societal
14 Pharoun

trends, cultural norms, and economic factors. For instance, the gig economy has blurred the
boundaries between work and leisure, leading to a rise in side hustles, freelance work, and the
monetization of hobbies. This shift highlights the need to strike a balance between productivity
and leisure, as excessive work can lead to burnout and decreased quality of life. In conclusion,
the study of leisure is essential in understanding how individuals prioritize their time, engage in
activities that bring them joy and fulfillment, and navigate the complexities of modern life. We as
Individuals can align our activities with our well-being goals by defining leisure based on
personal preferences and values and lead a more balanced and fulfilling life. Through critical
reflection and self-awareness, individuals can optimize their leisure time, cultivate meaningful
experiences, and enhance their overall quality of life in contemporary society.

Part 2: To help students understand the roles that leisure plays in their lives.
Q1. 1A)
In the past five years, one significant life-altering event that has had a profound impact on my
life was the decision to switch my undergraduate major from Recreation and Leisure Studies to
Communication and Cultural Media Studies. This transition marked a pivotal moment in my
academic journey and personal growth, reshaping not only my career aspirations but also
influencing how I spend my leisure time and patterns. The decision to change my major
stemmed from a deep introspection about my interests, passions, and long-term goals. While
pursuing Recreation and Leisure Studies, I realized that my true passion lies in understanding
the dynamics of communication, media, and culture. This realization prompted me to take a bold
step toward aligning my academic pursuits with my intrinsic motivations and career aspirations.
Transitioning to Communication and Cultural Media Studies opened up a whole new world of
opportunities and perspectives for me. I delved into courses that explored the power of media in
shaping societal norms, the influence of communication on cultural identities, and the role of
digital platforms in modern-day interactions. This shift not only broadened my intellectual
horizons but also honed my critical thinking skills and analytical abilities. From the perspective of
leisure time and patterns, this academic transition had a transformative impact on how I choose
to spend my free time. As I immersed myself in the realm of communication and media studies, I
found myself gravitating towards activities that complimented my newfound academic interests.
Here are some ways in which this event changed my leisure time and patterns:
1. Media Consumption: With a newfound appreciation for the nuances of media and
communication, I began consuming a wider variety of media content. I found myself exploring
diverse genres of films, documentaries, podcasts, and articles that deepened my understanding
of the subject matter I was studying.
2. Critical Analysis: Engaging with complex theories and concepts in communication and
cultural media studies sharpened my ability to critically analyze media messages and
representations. This newfound skill influenced how I approached leisure activities such as
watching movies or reading news articles, as I started to deconstruct underlying themes and
messages more consciously.
3. Creative Expression: Studying communication and media studies sparked my creativity and
inspired me to explore avenues of creative expression. I found myself engaging in activities
such as writing blogs, creating multimedia projects, and experimenting with visual storytelling as
a way to channel my newfound knowledge and insights.
15 Pharoun

4. Networking and Engagement: The shift to a communication-focused major also encouraged

me to actively engage with like-minded individuals and professionals in the field. I started
attending media-related events, joining relevant clubs and organizations, and networking with
industry professionals. These interactions not only enriched my academic experience but also
influenced how I chose to socialize and network in my leisure time.
5. Digital Literacy: As I delved deeper into communication and media studies, I became more
attuned to the digital landscape and the evolving trends in online communication. This newfound
digital literacy influenced how I engaged with social media platforms, consumed online content,
and participated in digital communities, shaping my leisure time activities in the digital realm.
Overall, the decision to switch my major to Communication and Cultural Media Studies was a
transformative experience that not only altered my academic trajectory but also influenced how I
approach leisure time and patterns. By aligning my academic pursuits with my passions and
interests, I have been able to cultivate a more enriching and fulfilling leisure lifestyle that
complements my academic journey.
Q1. 1B)
One unique activity that holds a special place in my family's traditions is our annual "Family
Recipe Day." This tradition, which we have been observing for over a decade, involves
gathering together as a family to cook and share cherished family recipes. This day is a time for
bonding, creating memories, and celebrating our cultural heritage through food. The origins of
Family Recipe Day trace back to my grandparents, who were passionate about cooking and
preserving our family's culinary traditions. They believed that food has the power to bring people
together and create lasting connections. As a result, they initiated this tradition as a way to pass
down recipes from generation to generation and ensure that our family's culinary legacy would
endure. On Family Recipe Day, which usually falls on a specific date each year, all family
members come together at my grandparents' house, where the kitchen buzzes with activity and
laughter. Each family member is assigned a recipe that holds significance to our family history.
These recipes range from traditional dishes that have been passed down for generations to
newer creations that have become family favorites over time. The day begins with a trip to the
local market to gather fresh ingredients, followed by a cooking session where family members
work together to prepare the dishes. The kitchen is filled with the aromas of spices, herbs, and
simmering sauces, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. As we cook, we share stories,
anecdotes, and memories associated with each recipe, strengthening our familial bonds and
creating a sense of togetherness. Once the dishes are ready, we gather around the dining table
to enjoy a feast of flavors and textures that represent our family's culinary heritage. The meal is
a celebration of our shared history, values, and traditions, served with love and care by each
family member. As we savor the dishes, we engage in lively conversations, laughter, and
moments of joy that create lasting memories. The value of Family Recipe Day in my life is
immeasurable. It not only allows me to connect with my family members on a deeper level but
also helps me appreciate the importance of preserving our cultural heritage. Through this
tradition, I have learned about the significance of food in shaping our identities, fostering
relationships, and creating a sense of belonging. I would categorize Family Recipe Day as a
leisure activity, albeit one with a deeper meaning and purpose. While it involves cooking and
eating, which are essential activities for sustenance, the primary focus is on bonding, sharing,
and celebrating our family's traditions. It provides a break from the routine of daily life and allows
16 Pharoun

us to relax, have fun, and create meaningful experiences together. In conclusion, Family Recipe
Day is a cherished tradition that has become an integral part of my family's identity. It embodies
the values of togetherness, heritage, and love, enriching our lives in ways that extend beyond
the kitchen.
Q2. 2A)
If my major essential activity of studying at university was suddenly taken away, I would find
myself with a significant amount of free time that would need to be filled constructively. In such a
scenario, I would explore various ways to make the most of this unexpected opportunity for
personal growth, skill development, and overall well-being. One of the first things I would do is
to reassess my goals and priorities. Without the academic commitments that previously
occupied a large portion of my time, I would have the chance to reflect on what truly matters to
me and what I aspire to achieve in both the short and long term. This period of introspection
could help me gain clarity on my values, interests, and ambitions, guiding me in deciding how
best to utilize my newfound free time. To fill the void left by the absence of university studies, I
would engage in activities that align with my passions and interests. For instance, I might
immerse myself in creative pursuits such as writing, painting, signing up for singing classes, or
playing a musical instrument. These activities would not only serve as outlets for self-expression
but also as avenues for honing my artistic skills and nurturing my creativity. Furthermore, I would
use this time to focus on personal development and self-improvement. This could involve taking
up new hobbies or learning new skills that I have always been curious about but never had the
time to pursue. For example, I might enroll in online courses or workshops to enhance my
knowledge in a particular field or acquire practical skills that could benefit me professionally or
personally. Physical well-being would also be a priority during this period of transition. With more
time on my hands, I would dedicate myself to maintaining a regular exercise routine and
exploring different forms of physical activity such as yoga, running, or strength training.
Engaging in regular exercise not only contributes to physical fitness but also has numerous
mental health benefits, such as reducing stress and improving mood. In addition to focusing on
personal growth and well-being, I would also seek opportunities to give back to the community
and make a positive impact on the world around me. Volunteering for local organizations,
participating in community service projects, or supporting charitable causes would be
meaningful ways to contribute to society and connect with others who share similar values.
Moreover, I would use this time to expand my horizons and broaden my perspectives through
reading, attending lectures, or engaging in discussions on topics of interest. Intellectual
stimulation is essential for continued growth and learning, and I would strive to stay curious and
open-minded by exposing myself to new ideas and viewpoints. In conclusion, if my major
essential activity of studying at university were suddenly taken away, I would view it as an
opportunity for personal reinvention and growth. By reassessing my goals, pursuing my
passions, focusing on self-improvement, prioritizing physical well-being, giving back to the
community, and expanding my horizons intellectually, I would strive to make the most of this
unexpected change in circumstances.
Q2. 2B)
If my major leisure activity, which is going to the gym to do my workout, was suddenly taken
away, it would undoubtedly leave a significant void in my routine. The gym has been an integral
part of my life, not just for physical fitness but also for mental well-being and stress relief. Losing
17 Pharoun

this outlet would require me to reassess how I spend my time and find alternative ways to stay
active and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Without the gym, I would need to explore different
avenues to fill that time and ensure that I continue to prioritize my physical health.
Here are some ways I could potentially fill the void left by the absence of my gym routine:
1. Outdoor Activities: I could turn to outdoor activities such as running, cycling, hiking, or even
outdoor yoga. These activities would not only help me stay active but also allow me to enjoy
nature and fresh air, which can be refreshing and rejuvenating.
2. At-Home Workouts: Setting up an at-home workout space and following online workout
videos or apps could be a convenient alternative to going to the gym. Bodyweight exercises,
yoga, or using simple equipment like resistance bands or dumbbells can still provide an effective
workout.
3. Sports or Group Classes: Joining local sports teams or group fitness classes could be a great
way to stay active while also socializing and meeting new people. This could add a social
aspect to my fitness routine, which I might miss from the gym environment.
4. Mindfulness Practices: In the absence of intense workouts, I could explore mindfulness
practices such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or tai chi to focus on mental well-being
and relaxation. These practices can complement physical exercise and contribute to overall
wellness.
5. Skill Development: Utilizing the extra time to learn a new skill or hobby could be a productive
way to fill the void left by the gym. Whether it's cooking, painting, playing a musical instrument,
or learning a new language, engaging in activities that stimulate the mind can be fulfilling.
6. Volunteering or Community Service: Getting involved in volunteering or community service
projects can be a rewarding way to give back to society and make a positive impact. It can also
provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment that might have been derived from gym sessions.
7. Self-Care Practices: Investing time in self-care activities like reading, journaling, taking
relaxing baths, or practicing self-care rituals can help maintain a sense of balance and
well-being in the absence of intense workouts.
8. Exploring Nature: Spending time in nature, whether it's going for walks in the park, picnicking
by the lake, or gardening, can be a therapeutic way to unwind and connect with the natural
world.
9. Creative Outlets: Engaging in creative pursuits like writing, drawing, crafting, or photography
can be a fulfilling way to express oneself and tap into creativity, which can be a great outlet for
stress relief.
10. Educational Pursuits: Enrolling in online courses or workshops to expand knowledge in
areas of interest or professional development can be a productive use of the extra time and
contribute to personal growth. In conclusion, while losing my gym routine would be a significant
change, it also presents an opportunity to explore new activities, hobbies, and routines that can
enrich my life in different ways. By being open to trying new things and adapting to this change,
I can continue to prioritize my physical and mental well-being while discovering new passions
and interests.
Q2. 2C)
When comparing and contrasting between Q2a and Q2b, which are my major leisure activities
of going to the gym to do my workout and studying at the university, several similarities and
differences can be identified.
18 Pharoun

The similarities of both activities require dedication, time management, and effort, yet they serve
different purposes and have distinct impacts on my life. However, I will delve into and explain in
detail the similarities and differences between these two activities, linking them back to the
concepts of recreation and leisure in contemporary society.
Similarities:
1. Personal Growth: Both going to the gym and studying at the university contribute to personal
growth and development. While working out helps me improve my physical health, studying
enhances my intellectual capabilities and knowledge base. Both activities require discipline and
perseverance to see progress and results.
2. Time Commitment: Both activities demand a significant time commitment. Whether it is
spending hours at the gym working out or studying for exams and assignments, they require
dedicated time slots in my daily schedule. Balancing these commitments can be challenging but
is essential for success in both areas.
3. Goal Setting: Setting goals is crucial in both going to the gym and studying at the university.
In the gym, I set fitness goals such as increasing muscle mass or improving endurance.
Similarly, in academics, I set goals related to grades, understanding complex concepts, or
completing projects. Achieving these goals provides a sense of accomplishment and motivates
me to continue striving for excellence.
4. Self-Discipline: Both activities require a high level of self-discipline. Whether it is resisting the
temptation to skip a workout or maintaining focus while studying, self-discipline plays a vital role
in achieving success in both areas. Developing self-discipline through these activities can have
positive effects on other aspects of my life as well.
Differences:
1. Physical vs. Mental Focus: One of the primary differences between going to the gym and
studying at the university is the focus on physical versus mental well-being. Going to the gym
and doing workouts primarily targets physical health, including strength, endurance, and overall
fitness. On the other hand, studying at the university focuses on mental stimulation, critical
thinking, and acquiring knowledge in various subjects.
2. Social Interaction: Going to the gym often involves social interactions with fellow gym-goers,
and trainers, or participating in group classes. It can be a social activity where individuals
connect over shared fitness goals. In contrast, studying at the university is more individualistic,
with a focus on personal academic achievements and intellectual growth. While group study
sessions exist, the primary focus is on individual learning and performance.
3. Immediate vs. Long-Term Benefits: The benefits of going to the gym, such as improved
physical fitness, increased energy levels, and stress relief, are often more immediate and
tangible. In contrast, the benefits of studying at the university, such as acquiring knowledge,
critical thinking skills, and career opportunities, are more long-term and may not be immediately
visible. Both activities require patience and persistence to reap the rewards.
4. Physical Environment: The physical environment of the gym and the university campus also
differs significantly. The gym is a space designed for physical activity, with equipment, weights,
and fitness classes available. In contrast, the university campus is a hub of academic learning,
with libraries, classrooms, and study spaces. The ambiance and atmosphere of these
environments influence the activities undertaken within them.
Link/Connection to Recreation and Leisure in Contemporary Society:
19 Pharoun

In the context of recreation and leisure in contemporary society, both going to the gym and
studying at the university can be viewed as leisure activities that individuals engage in to
enhance their well-being and personal development. According to Stebbins' serious leisure
perspective, both activities can be classified as serious leisure pursuits due to the commitment,
effort, and skill development involved in each. The concept of balance in leisure activities is also
relevant in this comparison. Balancing physical activities like going to the gym with mental
activities like studying at the university is essential for holistic well-being. Engaging in a variety
of leisure activities can help individuals maintain a healthy balance between the physical,
mental, and social aspects of their lives. Moreover, the distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic
motivation can be applied to these activities. While intrinsic motivation, such as personal
enjoyment or satisfaction, may drive individuals to go to the gym or study, extrinsic factors like
grades or physical appearance can also influence participation in these activities.
Understanding these motivational factors can help individuals derive greater fulfillment from
their leisure pursuits.
In conclusion, going to the gym and studying at the university serve different purposes and have
distinct impacts on my life, they share common elements such as personal growth, goal setting,
time commitment, and self-discipline. By engaging in these diverse leisure activities, I can
cultivate a well-rounded lifestyle that promotes physical, mental, and social well-being.
Balancing these activities effectively is key to maximizing the benefits of leisure in contemporary
society.
Q3. 3A)
The two leisure activities that have always piqued my interest but have remained elusive due to
various constraints are scuba diving and rock climbing. Despite my fascination with these
activities, a combination of intrapersonal, interpersonal, and structural constraints has hindered
my ability to pursue them. In this part of this question, I will delve into the specific constraints
within each category that have prevented me from engaging in scuba diving and rock climbing.
Scuba Diving:
Intrapersonal Constraints: One of the primary intrapersonal constraints that have deterred me
from trying scuba diving is my fear of deep water. The idea of descending into the depths of the
ocean triggers feelings of claustrophobia and anxiety within me. This fear has been a significant
barrier as it creates a mental block that prevents me from fully embracing the experience of
scuba diving. Additionally, concerns about potential health risks associated with diving, such as
decompression sickness, have also contributed to my hesitation in pursuing this activity.
Interpersonal Constraints: On an interpersonal level, the lack of friends or family members who
share my interest in scuba diving has been a significant constraint. The absence of a support
system or diving buddies has made it challenging to find companions to explore this activity
with. Without a network of like-minded individuals to engage in scuba diving with, the prospect
of embarking on this adventure alone feels daunting and isolating.
Structural Constraints: From a structural perspective, the high cost associated with scuba diving
certification courses, equipment, and dive trips has been a major impediment. As a student with
limited financial resources, the expenses involved in scuba diving present a significant barrier.
The need for specialized gear, training, and travel arrangements adds up quickly, making it
difficult to justify the financial investment required to pursue this leisure activity.
Rock Climbing:
20 Pharoun

Intrapersonal Constraints: Similar to scuba diving, a key intrapersonal constraint that has
hindered my exploration of rock climbing is a fear of heights. The thought of scaling vertical rock
faces triggers feelings of vertigo and unease, making it challenging for me to overcome this
psychological barrier. The fear of falling or losing control while climbing poses a significant
challenge to fully engaging in this activity.
Interpersonal Constraints: On an interpersonal level, the lack of friends or acquaintances who
are experienced rock climbers has been a limiting factor. Without a mentor or supportive group
to guide me through the learning process, the idea of venturing into the world of rock climbing
feels overwhelming and inaccessible. The absence of a community of climbers to share
knowledge and experiences with has made it difficult to take the first steps toward trying this
activity.
Structural Constraints: Structural constraints related to rock climbing include limited access to
suitable climbing locations and facilities in my local area. The absence of nearby climbing gyms
or outdoor rock formations suitable for beginners has made it challenging to find opportunities to
practice and develop my skills. Additionally, the cost of purchasing climbing gear and enrolling in
training programs adds another layer of financial constraint that has deterred me from pursuing
rock climbing as a leisure activity. In conclusion, the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and structural
constraints outlined above have collectively impeded my ability to explore scuba diving and rock
climbing, two leisure activities that have long captured my interest. Overcoming these
constraints will require a combination of self-reflection, seeking out supportive communities, and
addressing practical barriers such as cost and access to resources. By acknowledging and
addressing these constraints, I hope to one day overcome my fears and limitations to
experience the thrill and fulfillment that scuba diving and rock climbing have to offer.
Q3. 3B)
The leisure activity that has been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in my life is
hiking. Hiking, a recreational activity that involves walking long distances through natural
environments such as mountains, forests, and trails, has been a cherished pastime of mine for
years. However, due to the global health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this activity
has undergone notable changes that have affected both my individual experience and the hiking
community as a whole.

Description of Hiking:
Hiking is a form of physical exercise and outdoor recreation that offers numerous benefits for
both physical and mental well-being. It provides an opportunity to connect with nature, enjoy
scenic views, and escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. Hiking can be done solo or in
groups, making it a versatile activity suitable for individuals of all ages and fitness levels.
Whether it's a leisurely stroll through a local park or a challenging trek up a mountain peak,
hiking allows enthusiasts to explore the great outdoors and reap the rewards of being immersed
in nature.
Ways COVID-19 impacted are:
Hiking:
1. Individual Impact:
● Positive Impact: Increased Interest in Outdoor Activities: One positive impact of the
COVID-19 pandemic on hiking has been the surge in interest in outdoor activities. With
21 Pharoun

restrictions on indoor gatherings and limited recreational options, many individuals

turned to hiking as a safe and socially distant way to stay active and enjoy nature. This
increased interest led to more people discovering the joys of hiking and exploring local
trails, fostering a sense of community among outdoor enthusiasts.
● Negative Impact: Trail Closures and Restrictions: On the flip side, the COVID-19
pandemic also brought about negative impacts on hiking at an individual level. Many
hiking trails and parks were temporarily closed or had restrictions imposed to prevent
overcrowding and maintain social distancing. This meant that avid hikers like myself had
limited access to our favorite trails, leading to frustration and disappointment. The
closures and restrictions disrupted hiking routines and forced enthusiasts to seek
alternative outdoor activities or explore new, less crowded trails.
2. Community-Wide Impact:
● Positive Impact: Appreciation for Nature and Conservation: The COVID-19 pandemic
prompted a positive shift in the hiking community's perspective towards nature and
conservation. As more people turned to hiking and outdoor activities for solace during
lockdowns and restrictions, there was a heightened awareness of the importance of
preserving natural spaces. This newfound appreciation for nature sparked initiatives to
protect hiking trails, promote sustainable practices, and educate hikers on Leave No
Trace principles. The pandemic catalyzed fostering a greater sense of environmental
stewardship within the hiking community.
● Negative Impact: Decline in Group Hiking Events: Another significant negative impact of
COVID-19 on the hiking community was the decline in group hiking events and
organized outings. Social distancing guidelines and restrictions on group gatherings
meant that hiking clubs, meetups, and guided tours were put on hold or canceled. These
group activities not only provided opportunities for social interaction and camaraderie
among hikers but also facilitated skill-sharing, mentorship, and community-building. The
absence of group hiking events due to the pandemic led to a sense of isolation and
disconnectedness within the hiking community.
In conclusion, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the leisure activity of
hiking, affecting both individual hikers and the hiking community at large. While the pandemic
brought about challenges such as trail closures and restrictions, it also sparked a renewed
interest in outdoor activities and a heightened appreciation for nature and conservation. As we
navigate the ongoing effects of the pandemic, hikers need to adapt to the changing landscape of
outdoor recreation, prioritize safety and responsible hiking practices, and support initiatives that
promote the preservation of natural spaces for future generations to enjoy.
Q3. 3C)
Leisure activities play a crucial role in our lives, providing opportunities for personal growth,
relaxation, and self-expression. There is one such activity that has become an integral part of
my repertoire is photography. Initially, I had a limited understanding of photography, but through
the guidance and mentorship of a close friend, I was able to develop a deep appreciation for this
art form. In this essay, I will explore how the determinants of leisure, particularly the role of the
individual, have influenced my journey in photography and how this experience reflects broader
themes in contemporary society's approach to recreation and leisure.
22 Pharoun

Description of the Activity: Photography is a visual art form that involves capturing moments,
emotions, and stories through the lens of a camera. As a beginner, I was drawn to the idea of
photography but lacked the technical skills and creative vision to fully express myself through
this medium. It was during a casual conversation with a friend who was an avid photographer
that I became intrigued by the possibilities that photography offered. My friend shared their
passion for photography, showcasing their portfolio and explaining the technical aspects of
capturing compelling images.
Involvement in Photography: Inspired by my friend's enthusiasm, I decided to delve deeper into
the world of photography. I began by learning the basics of camera settings, composition, and
lighting techniques. My friend generously offered to mentor me, providing constructive feedback
on my work, sharing resources for further learning, and accompanying me on photo walks to
explore different subjects and settings. Through this mentorship, I gradually honed my skills and
developed my unique style as a photographer.
Determinants of Leisure: The determinants of leisure, as outlined in Lesson 3, highlight the
various factors that influence an individual's engagement in leisure activities. In the context of
my experience with photography, the role of the individual, particularly my friend who served as
a mentor, played a pivotal role in facilitating and expanding my knowledge of this activity. Their
guidance and support not only helped me acquire technical skills but also nurtured my passion
for photography, encouraging me to explore new creative avenues and push the boundaries of
my artistic expression.
Critical Thought Process: Reflecting on the questions posed, it is evident that the influence of a
mentor in learning a leisure activity can significantly impact an individual's engagement and
development in that pursuit. In the case of photography, my friend's mentorship not only
accelerated my learning process but also instilled in me a sense of confidence and motivation to
pursue photography as a meaningful leisure activity. By actively engaging with my mentor and
seeking feedback, I was able to expand my knowledge, refine my skills, and cultivate a deeper
appreciation for the art of photography.
Contemporary Relevance: In contemporary society, the role of mentorship and guidance in
leisure activities remains essential, especially in an age where information is readily accessible
through digital platforms. While online resources can provide valuable insights and tutorials, the
personal connection and guidance offered by a mentor or experienced individual can have a
profound impact on one's learning experience. This highlights the importance of human
interaction and mentorship in fostering a sense of community, shared learning, and skill
development in leisure pursuits.
In conclusion, the influence of a mentor in learning a leisure activity, such as photography, can
shape an individual's journey, fostering growth, creativity, and passion for the pursuit. Through
the lens of the determinants of leisure, particularly the role of the individual, my experience with
photography exemplifies the transformative power of mentorship in expanding knowledge and
enhancing engagement in leisure activities. By acknowledging the critical role of mentors in
leisure pursuits, we can cultivate a culture of shared learning, collaboration, and personal
development in contemporary society's approach to recreation and leisure.
