How to analyse a research article

(approx. 200-250 words)

Remember to include your: NAME, SURNAME, STUDENT ID and YOUR MEDICAL


SPECIALTY

Tips:

Use an academic style: formal, accurate, precise. Not informal (contractions are not allowed);
Do not express your personal opinions or beliefs;
You can use words from the article (to some extent), but do not exaggerate. It is better to paraphrase
them.

INTRODUCTION
(It is a short paragraph)
How can you start? By way of example: “This article talks about”, “This article focuses on”, “This
article deals with”, “The main topic/concern/argument of this article is/are”…

BODY (at least 2 paragraphs)


(It consists of 2-3 longer paragraphs)
It usually contains the main argument(s)

• Explain the research project or findings;


• Report the main argument(s): “The team/The researchers/The authors believe, argue, claim,
state… that…”;
• Other (where appropriate).

CONCLUSION

It is a short paragraph. It is not a personal conclusion.

Tell something about the research goals and developments in the future or the impact on human
beings, and so on…

Remember to use linking words: “therefore”, “on the one hand”, “on the other hand”, “as a
consequence”, “as a result”, “first”, “second”, “accordingly” and so on…
