TASK 5.4: WRITTEN PHYSICAL EDUCATION TASK
TRADITIONAL AND NON-TRADITIONAL SPORT

TIME: 2 WEEKS TOTAL: 20

INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION:

1. This task consists of TWO activities:
• Activity 1: Write a report on soccer (traditional sport)
• Activity 2: Design your own non-traditional sport
2. You are required to do any ONE of the two activities.
3. Read your instructions carefully at your chosen activity, before you attempt to do the
activity.
4. If you are enrolled in a school, your educator may require you to also practically
present your task, although you will not be assessed on the practical.
5. You are allowed to write (neatly and legibly) or type (Arial 12) the task. You will be
expected to submit a neatly bound task.
6. Your task should include the following:
• A cover page with your name, surname, grade, student number and task
number.
• A table of contents.
• A neatly written / typed task with headings and subheadings.
• A bibliography (list of sources used) – remember that pictures, illustrations
and photographs are also sources and therefore also need to be referenced.

ACTIVITY 1: TRADITIONAL SPORT – WRITE A REPORT ON SOCCER

Soccer is the most popular sport in South Africa. It is estimated that more than 2 million
people participate in this sport, while many more follow it on a local and international level.

Soccer connects people. It is easy to learn how to play the game from an early age and
offers fun-filled exercise. It is an exciting, fast-paced game and a lot of fun.

Both boys and girls play soccer and there are men and women that participate in local and
international teams.

It is a game that can be enjoyed alone or played within a group. The biggest benefit is that
it is excellent exercise.

INSTRUCTIONS:
• Do proper research on soccer as a traditional sport.
• Write a report of about THREE pages in which you discuss the following aspects of
the game:

 How and where did soccer originate?

 Equipment needed.
 Explanation of the sport such as the number of players in a team, rules and
what a typical soccer field looks like.
 Skills needed.
 Health benefits of the sport.

• Include pictures and photographs to visually present the sport.

Your task will be assessed with the attached rubric for Activity 1.

ACTIVITY 2: NON-TRADITIONAL SPORT – DESIGN YOUR OWN NON-

TRADITIONAL SPORT

Usually, non-traditional sport doesn’t have a long history or strict rules like a traditional sport.
Anyone can participate in a non-traditional sport, although it is sometimes considered as
“extreme”. It differs from the habits and traditions of traditional sport. Non-traditional sport
also include a lot of benefits like fitness, socializing and psychological benefits.

INSTRUCTIONS:
• Design your own non-traditional sport by using some of the following skills and
equipment:

 Wheelbarrow race
 Skipping rope
 Piggyback rides
 Vehicle tyres
 Wall climbing
 Jump on one leg
 Sack race
 Hula hoops
 Tug of war
 Any other

• Write a report of about THREE pages in which you explain the following aspects of
your non-traditional sport:

 A name for your non-traditional sport.

 An explanation of your non-traditional sport, including rules and instructions.
 Equipment and skills needed.
 Health benefits of your non-traditional sport.

• Include pictures and photographs to visually present your non-traditional sport.
