ASSIGNMENT
What are the Major Components of the Internet
Servers IP (internet protocol) Address- In Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), a unique 32-bit
number that identifies each host or other hardware system on a network. The IP address is a set of numbers separated by
dots, such as “192.0.2.1” which specifies the actual location of a machine on an intranet or the Internet.
Browsers- Alternatively referred to as a web browser or Internet browser, a browser is a software program to present and
explore content on the World Wide Web. These pieces of content, including pictures, videos, and web pages, are
connected using hyperlinks and classified with URIs (Uniform Resource Identifiers). This page is an example of a web page
that can be viewed using a browser.
DNS (domain name server)- A DNS is a computer server that contains a database of many IP addresses and their associated
domain names. It serves to translate a requested domain name into an IP address, so that the computer knows which IP
address to connect to for the requested contents. The Internet is a network of connected computers, and they
communicate with each other through IP addresses. A DNS plays an important role in helping us to conveniently use the
Internet and it is one of the most essential foundations of the Internet as we know it today.
ISP (internet server provider)- The term Internet service provider (ISP) refers to a company that provides access to the
Internet to both personal and business customers. ISPs make it possible for their customers to surf the web, shop online,
conduct business, and connect with family and friends—all for a fee. ISPs may also provide other services including email
services, domain registration, web hosting, and browser packages. An ISP may also be referred to as an information service
provider, a storage service provider, an Internet service provider (INSP), or any combination of these three based on the
services the company offers.
When do use (.com), (.org), (.edu)? how is this process identified by the internet, and to whom are these
organizations go to to have their DNS registered?
Top-Level Domains (TLDs) In 1985, The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) released six top-level domain names.
These top-level domains (TLD) became known as domain name extensions and represent the highest level in the Domain
Name System hierarchy. They include:
.com: shorthand for commercial, .com was the first top-level domain in common use. While .com was initially created for
use by commercial organizations, restrictions on this were not stringent. By the mid-1990s, .com had become the most
popular and commonly used type of top-level domain for businesses, websites, and email.
.edu: shorthand for education, .edu was made for education institutions. Although it was intended for universities
everywhere, the TLD .edu became associated with only educational centers in America. Schools from other countries will
use .edu in conjunction with their country-level domain, which we will discuss in the next section below. .org: shorthand for
organization,
.org was created for nonprofits. As we’ve seen with these other top-level domains, such intentions were often not upheld
or enforced over time. These days .org is used as a top-level domain by nonprofits, for-profit businesses, schools, and
communities. Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) manages the domain names system. It is a
non-profit organization that creates and implements the policies for domain names. ICANN gives permission to companies
called Domain Name Registrars for selling domain names. These domain registrars are allowed to make changes to domain
names registry on your behalf. Domain name registrars can sell domain names, manage its records, renewals, and transfers
to other registrars. As a domain name owner, you are responsible for telling the registrar where to send requests. You are
also responsible for renewing your domain registration
Interview 5 store owners around your community, and create your initial interview as to the
following:
*list the name of the stores, and the date of organization, address and contact no.
*who among them uses the internet to market their products?
* how did their business bounce back during the pandemic?
*create 5 additional questions for them related to internet use.
