When rounding to the nearest 10 you need to look at the last digit;
the units’ digit, and use the rules of rounding:

1, 2, 3, 4 round down to the nearest 0

5, 6, 7, 8, 9 round up to the next number, the nearest 0.

1 22 rounds down to
20
2 134 round down to 130
3 503 rounds down to 500
4 1196 rounds up to 1200
5 33,998 rounds up to 34,000
Remember: that 5x ÷ 2 means
5 times the value of x, and then divide the answer by 2

The completed table should look like this:

x 2 10 20 12 6 8
5x ÷ 2 5 25 50 30 15 20

a) When x = 10 5x = 50 5x ÷ 2 =
6 25
7 b) When 5x ÷ 2 = 50 5x = 50 x 2 x= 100 ÷ 5 = 20
8 c) When x = 12 5x = 60 5x ÷ 2 = 30

9 d) When x = 6 5x = 30 5x ÷ 2 = 15
10 e) When 5x ÷ 2 = 20 5x = 40 x = 40 ÷ 5 = 8
11 Half a circle should be drawn as:

12 On Wednesday, 8 goals were scored

On Thursday, 3 goals were scored 5 goals
The difference is 8 – 3 =

13 Total of goals scored Monday to Friday = 23 goals

23 goals + 7 goals scored over the weekend = 30 goals
14 6 goals were scored on Monday out of 30 goals throughout the
whole week: 6
30
Divide top and bottom by 6 = 1 20%
5
1 = 2 =
5 10

15 30 goals were scored in the first week and we know that the
average goals scored in 2 weeks was 25 goals

So 30 + = 25 20 goals
2 scored
Multiply by 2: 30 + = 50 So = 20 in 2nd week

16 Long multiplication – use the method you prefer or find easiest

Mentally, you could do

22 x 60 = 1320 1408
22 x 4 = 88
22 x 64 = 1408

17 Multiplying by 1.1 is difficult. It is easier to multiply

by 11 and then divide by 10
14.3
13 x 11 = 143 then ÷ by 10 =

18 Easier to change 0.5 to ½ and ½ x ½ = ¼ = 0.25

19 Change to improper fractions then multiply numerators and

denominators 4 and 1
21
(1 and 2/3) x (2 and 3/7) = 5/3 x 17/7 = 85/21

20 Again, change to improper fractions

(3 and 2/5 ) – (2 and 4/10) = 17/5 – 24/10

Then change fifths into tenths:

=1
17/5 = 34/10

The sum now becomes:

34 - 24 = 10
10 10 10

21 The cube has all sides as 5cm:

Area of one face = 5 x 5 = 25 cm2
6 faces in total = 6 x 25 = 150 cm2
22 The cuboid has 6 rectangular faces in total. Be careful, as there are
3 different lengths and therefore the faces are different sizes. There
are 2 faces of each size.
Rectangle 1 = (6 x 3) = 18 cm2
There are 2 faces = 2 x 18 = 36 cm2
Rectangle 2 = (3 x 2) = 6 cm2 72 cm2
There are 2 faces = 2 x 6 = 12 cm2
Rectangle 3 = (6 x 2) = 12 cm2
There are 2 faces = 2 x 12 = 24cm2
Total surface area =

23 Here we have a triangular prism that has two equilateral triangular

faces and three rectangular faces.

Area of triangle face = (5 x 6 ) ÷ 2 = 15 cm2

There are two triangles = 15 x 2 = 30 cm2
228 cm2
Area of rectangle = 11 x 6 = 66 cm2
There are 3 rectangles = 66 x 3 = 198 cm2
Total surface area = 198cm2 + 30cm2 =

24 Find 10% and then 5% and add the answers together:

10% of £65 = £6.50

5% of £65 = ½ of 10% = ½ of £6.50 = £3.25 £9.75
15% = £6.50 + £3.25 =

25 Reduce means ‘to make smaller’ so therefore we need to subtract.

10% of £80 = £8
20% of £80 = 2 x 10% = 2 x £8 = £16 £64
£80 - £16 =

For all sharing in ratio questions follow these steps:

26 Share £48 in 8:4

• Add up number of parts: 8 + 4 = 12 parts

• Divide money by number of parts = £48 ÷ 12 = £4 per part
• In 8 parts we have 8 x £4= £32 £32 : 16
• In 4 parts we have 4 x £4 = £16
• Ensure your results add up to the total money: £32 + £16 = £48

27 Number of parts = 8 + 12 = 20 parts

£60 ÷ 20 = £3 per part

8 parts x £3 per part = £24
12 parts x £3 per part = £36 £24 : 36
£24 + £36 = £60 so answer must be correct!

28 Number of parts = 9 + 4 = 13 parts

£39 ÷ 13 = £3 per part

9 parts x £3 per part = £27 £27 : 12
4 parts x £3 per part = £12

£27 + £12 = £39 so answer must be correct!

29 43 = 4 x 4 x 4 = 64
30 302 = 30 x 30 = 900

31 Work out the answer mentally if you can

18 x 6 = 6 x 10 = 60 p + 6 x 8 = 48 p £1.08
32 We need 1/3 of £1.20
so £1.20 ÷ 3 =
40p
33 1 kg = 1000g so if it is £1 for 1000g it is 10p per 100g
400g = 10p x 4 = 40p
34 1 m = 30p so 0.5m = 15p
2m = 60p so 2.5m = 60p + 15p = 75p
35 Find the total of all your answers and subtract from £20:

Apples = £1.08
Oranges = £0.40
Bananas = £0.40 £17.37
Rope = £0.75
£2.63

£20 – £2.63 =

Remember that 17.5% means £17.50 per £100.

The completed table should look like this:

Item Cost before VAT Cost after VAT

Camera £100 £117.50
DVD £50 £58.75
Bed £200 £234
CD £20 £23.50

This is how the answers were calculated if you did not

get the right answers

36 £100 + £17.50 = £117.50

37 £50 +(½ of £17.50) = £50 + £8.75 = £58.75

38 £200 + (2 x £17.50) = £200 + £35 = £235

39 £20 + (£17.50 ÷ 5) = £20 + £3.50 = £23.50
40 This means 3 to the power of ‘something’ is 9. You should know
that 3 squared is 9, so 32 = 9 b=2
41 Work out the right hand side (RHS) of the equation first:

150 – 25 = 125 b=3

5 to the power of ‘something’ is 125. (53 = 125)
42 Remember how to solve simple algebra equations:

4b + 4 = 40 b=9
• (- 4 from both sides) 4b = 36
• (÷ both sides by 4)

43 b x b x b is the same as b3 so b3 = 64
b=4
If you know your cube numbers, 4 x 4 x 4 = 64 so

44 We need to ‘undo’ ÷ by 5 so we x by 5 and we will obtain:

b2 ÷ 5 = 20
b2 = 100
b = 10
Hopefully, you know that 10 x 10 = 100

45 To solve, first remove the smallest number, (-2) by +2 to both sides:

8b – 2 = 6b + 14 (+2)
8b = 6b + 16

Now remove the smallest amount of b (6b) from both sides b=8
by (- 6b)

2b = 16 Now ÷ both sides by 2:

46 50 Before you can order the lengths, convert them into the same units:
0.5km (x 1000) = 500m (x 100) = 50,000cm
300cm = 300cm
6005mm (÷ 10) = 600.5cm
600m (x100) = 60,000cm
5 miles = 8km = 8000m = 800000cm
(you need to learn that 5miles = 8km)

In order smallest to largest:

(Same units) 300cm, 600.5cm, 50,000cm, 60,000cm, 800,000cm

(Original values) 300cm, 6005mm, 0.5km, 600m, 5 miles
