Abstract

Plastic is everywhere, a common and effective solution to storing of food products, to storing
detergents, and even acidic components such as those used in car batteries. The list goes on and on for
the importance of plastic in our society however, not everything we take from plastic especially plastic
bottles has been of advantage to our ecosystem, with the plastic components proving hard to get rid
off , The weight of plastic bottles trash has grown over the year. This leaves an unchecked hazard to our
ecosystem, especially the oceans. Plastic pollution of plastic bottles has grown more and more difficult
to control and this is due to the increase in the production of plastic bottles over the years, and its over-
dependence has grown more and more. Plastic is a hard component to get rid off since it is persistent in
degrading and hence we see lots of plastic bottles lying around. Some float in rivers and the ocean
surface, others along the coastlines, and others in marine life, especially turtles, which get there though
ingestion when this organism confuses them for prey or food. There are some methods developed to
help reduce plastic bottles but have not fully fixed the problem at hand. In our Kenyan coastline, every
week students from schools volunteer to collect some of the washed up plastics along the coastline.
Some are recycled but due to lack of enough infrastructure for recycling industries, most are thrown in
landfills. This is to show that plastic bottles still pose a problem to modern society and measures need to
be taken before we end up killing all marine life and destroying coastlines. This project's main focus is to
present a mathematical model of the collection of plastic bottles and possible solutions to be taken on
the future to help control and reduce the weight of plastic bottle waste in the ocean, using the Indian
Ocean as a case study.
