What is Dynamo Effect?

The dynamo effect refers to a set of theories to explain
how a magnetic field is generated in a celestial body such as
the Earth. The dynamo theory in physics suggests a method by
which a celestial body, such the Earth or a star, produces a
magnetic field. A revolving, convecting, and electrically
conducting fluid can sustain a magnetic field across
astronomical time scales according to the dynamo hypothesis.
The magnetic fields of Mercury, the Jovian planets, and the
Earth are all assumed to have originated from a dynamo.
It is the self-generation of a magnetic field by a
conducting body moving in an initially weak or zero magnetic field. The idea is that a current
producing a magnetic field is itself produced by the magnetic field that it generates, in the same way
that a dynamo produces current. This is sometimes called a self-exciting dynamo in this context. Many
physicists have tackled this question, but the first sound theoretical results were not obtained until the
fifties and sixties by researchers such as Eugène Parker and, mainly, Stanislav Braginsky.

Reaction:
Dynamo effect is interesting because it talks about the Earth’s main magnetic field. I also learned
that in this dynamo mechanism, fluid motion in Earth’s outer core moves conducting material (liquid
iron) across an already existing weak magnetic field and generates an electric current. And lastly, I also
learned that together, the two fields are stronger than the original and lie essentially along the axis of
Earth’s rotation.
