The first systemic steps towards understanding psychological factors in


mental disorders came through contribution of Sigmund Freud (1856 -- 1939 )

Topographic Model of the Mind

Freud divided the mind in 3 regions –


The Conscious
The Preconscious
The Unconscious

The Conscious --
The part of the mind in which perceptions coming from the outside world or
from within the body or mind are brought into awareness.

The Preconscious --
Easily accessible.
Deeper to Conscious.
Outside awareness.
Memories, Thoughts , Ideas.

The Unconscious --
Not easily accessible.
Deepest layer.
Buried deep.
Accessible only through Dreams, Slips, Analysis.

Structure of Personality

Id. -- Instincts
Ego -- Reality
Super ego -- Morality.

Id --
 Pleasure Principle
 Biological, Satisfactory of instinctual urges & desire.
 Not in touch with reality.
 Primitive mind.
 No morality, Selfish, Amoral.
 Personality of inborn child.
 Id --. Instinctual drive
 Constructive drive ( Sex drive ) libido, basic energy of life
 Destructive drive ( death instinct)
 Aggression,Destruction.

Ego --
 Reality principle.
 Part of id modified by external world.
 Rational, works by reason & norms, satisfied by gratification.
 " Ego is horse and Id is rider "
 Moderator, decision maker,
 Mostly conscious.
 Negotiate between Id and Superego.

Superego --
 Morality principle.
 Conscience, Morality.
 Starts at age 5
 Moralistic component of personality.
 Judgement maker.
 Agent of law like Police.
 Law enforcer.
 Agent of society.
 Present in Preconscious, conscious and unconscious mind.

Freud ----- Anxiety. ---- Psychic pain

Reality Anxiety -- Danger and Threat of External World.

Neurotic Anxiety --. Id s impulse threating to break Ego control.

Moral Anxiety -- Anxiety arising from conflict with Superego.
