Two factors contributing to the success of the Cuban Sugar Industry.

 Investments

One of the most important factors in the success of the Cuban sugar industry was the
investment by the United States. During World War I, high sugar prices and the
increase of sugar consumption in the US between 1903 and 1925 further stimulated
investment in Cuba to improve the infrastructure needed for production. The United
States then invested more than 60% of its global agricultural industry mainly in Cuba.
This investment allowed investors to acquire large areas of land, create more powerful
and modern mills, expand private railroads for cane transportation, and mechanise the
Cuban sugar industry.

 Advanced Technology

Modern technology brought great efficiency to the Cuban sugar industry, it tripled
yields in refining, reduced the costs of production and enabled rapid expansion of the
industry. The Cuban sugar industry was characterised by massive mills which covered
thousands of acres of land. Between the period of 1900 and 1915, 27 colossal ingenios
were established, which were capable of producing enormous quantities of sugar in a
day. Gigantic estates were developed to feed these centrales and a network of private
railroads to move cane quickly from field to factory and sugar from factory to port.
