Quote that the group agrees with:

"Democracy is a device that

insures we shall be governed no
better than we deserve."
- George Bernard Shaw
Who was George Ireland, 1856 – England, 1950
Bernard Shaw ?
Playwrighter and political activist

in 1925

religion
What does this quote mean?
It means basically,

You get the government you elect.

That's how a democracy works.

A government system in which the supreme power is fixed to the people and
exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation
usually involving periodically held free elections.
Why do we agree with this statement?

In a democratic state, the government

elected is most of the times a mirror of the
community.
Examples:
31% of the american population
1 support in the democrat party,
therefore, the last president
elected (Joe Biden) makes part
of the democratic party.

Close to 50% of the brazilian

2 population didn't finish high
school. Coincidentally, close to
20% of the deputies that take
part of the brazilian legislation
also didn't complete high
school.
Conclusion
We shouldn't always blame
politicians for everything that goes
wrong. But put the blame on us.
People who elected certain politicians
to govern us.

It is miserable enough that we

immediately stop electing politicians
for religion, class and selfish reasons.
Instead, we must stop seeing them
as a know it all.
Our connection to

"Democracy is a device that

insures we shall be governed
no better than we deserve."
- George Bernard Shaw
is:

Wall-E
How is this connection possible?
Basically, humanity is no more allowed to
survive on earth, due to the poor conditions
of air and earth.
Let's observe the quote carefully
"Democracy is a device that insures we shall be governed no better
than we deserve."

Change, for the context:

Democracy -> our choices;

Governed -> live.

"Our choices insures that we shall live no better than we deserve."

Why?
The people that live in Walle-E's
universe are just "paying" for even those who didn't want to
their own errors, such as do not
take care of the enviroment.

Despite the fact that someone

or other took care of the
environment, the majority
(democracy) decided that this
issue was not important, and
everyone was forced to leave
the earth.
So...
This all means that:

"Democracy (their choices) was

certainly a device that ensured that
they all were governed (lived) no
better than what they deserved."
Quote that the group disagrees with:

"Democracy is the road to

socialism."
- Karl Marx
Who was May 1818 - Trier, Germany
Karl Marx?
Economist, historian, sociologist
and socialist revolutionary.

Published the Communist

Manifest in 1848

Important critic of the

Capitalism System

Nominated the Scientfic

Socialism
What does this quote mean?
It means basically,

Democracy is the first step to a socialist system.

But that is not necessarily true

First, what is socialism?
Socialism describes any political or economic theory that says the
community, rather than individuals, should own and manage property
and natural resources.

In a socialist system, all

means of production,
distribution, and exchange
should be owned or regulated
by the community as a whole.
Why do we disagree with the statement?
In a socialist system, people do not have the power to vote
and actively participate in the administration of the country.
That being true, the quote is
necessarily wrong

How? Let me explain:

The quote "Democracy is the road to socialism." applies

that Democracy should exist in order to socialism
happen. But for the high hierarchy group who controls
the Democracy, it would not be beneficial to change the
system to a non-democratic one.
So,
Socialism being not full democratic, the people who
control the democracy would not find beneficial or
profitable to change. Therefore socialism won't
necessarily happen
Our connection to

"Democracy is the road to

socialism."
- Karl Marx
is:

"The death of
Lenin"
This was also a theme of this year's Smun

But why is this connection relevant?

Let's do history!
Lenin dies in 1924
He was one of the most most important
communists that ever existed;

But who takes over the government

afterwards?
Joseph Stalin, exactly
But how?
Stalin's rise to power came after Lenin's death, with the Georgian
leader imposing a government based on terror and marked by
the death of millions of people, whether by summary executions
or in forced labor camps.

Futhermore, even Lenin did not want Stalin in

power, after his death.
A system for choosing and
Nevertheless, let's replacing the government
remember what through free and fair elections;

democracy is:
Active participation of the people,
as citizens, in politics and civic life;

Protection of the human rights of

all citizens;

A rule of law in which the laws

and procedures apply equally to
all citizens.
What we have learned
So if Marx said that
democracy is the road to
socialism,

but the greatest socialist

leader was not able to
follow a democracy...

Who will?
Thank you.
