Type of qualification tests required in groove

10.16 (tubular)
Substitution of RT for guided bend tests: Clause
6.23.3 (non-tubular) and Clause 10.21.2 (tubular).

Tack welders
For non-tubular, Clause 6.17.2 and Clause 6.24.
For tubular, Clause 10.17.

Test specimens

Non-tubular
o Welder, Clause 6.21.1, length of test coupon L =
180 mm (recommended 200 mm).
o Welding operator, Clause 6.21.2, length of test
coupon L = 380 mm (recommended 400 mm).

Tubular
o Welder and Welding operator, Clause 10.17,
also Clause 10.21.2, length of test coupon L = 150
mm.

Essential variables

Clause 6.20 and Table 6.12.

Qualification form
Suggest form: AWS D1.1 Annex M or get free

Period of effectiveness
Within six months, Clause 6.2.3
Retest, Clause 6.25.1

Common questions

o Welding operator: min. 380 mm in length for all
positions, discard 75 mm both site for RT test.
Tubular
o Test coupon, OD >= 100 mm: min. one-half of
pipe, see 9.22.2
o Test coupon, OD < 100 mm: 100% RT, see
9.22.2

Guided bend test method


Preparation of test specimen,
o See Figure 4.8, 4.9, 4.10 or 4.14 (non-tubular)
o See Figure 9.28 (Tubular)
T < 10 mm, 2 specimens of face- and root- bend
test.
T > = 10 mm, 2 specimens of side bend test.

RT procedure
Clause 4.22.3.1 (non-tubular)
Clause 9.22.2 (Tubular)
o RT Test Procedure and Technique. Welded test
pipe or tubing 4 in [100 mm] in diameter or
larger shall be examined for a minimum of one-
half of the weld perimeter selected to include a
sample of all positions welded.

For example,

A test pipe or tube welded in the 5G, 6G, or 6GR


position shall be radiographed from the top
centerline to the bottom centerline on either
side.
Welded test pipe or tubing less than 4 in [100
mm] in diameter shall require 100% RT.

Macroetch test
T-Y-K connection, Clause 9.20.1.

Acceptance Criteria

Guided bend test, Clause 4.9.3.3


RT acceptance criteria, Clause 6.12.2, except
6.12.2.2 shall not apply
Fillet weld break, Clause 4.22.4.1

Clause 4.2.2.2 Qualification Responsibility.


Each manufacturer or Contractor shall be responsible
for the qualification of welders, welding operators and
tack welders, whether the qualification is conducted by
the manufacturer, Contractor, or an independent
testing agency.
