Information is everywhere, these days it is very easy to find it. There are a lot of news channels, millions of
websites, journals, books, magazine articles you can use for your research.

The key to succeeding in this information era is to harness the power of information through effective and
thorough research.
What is research?
When you do a research you learn more about a subject by exploring existing knowledge such as books,
magazine articles, websites, newspapers, journals which are all examples of secondary sources.
Secondary sources are secondary because someone other than you has made the observations, done the
experiments, conducted the interviews or surveys.
What Secondary Sources are Right for You?
As a student in the digital age, it is essential that you must learn how to research or locate information using a
wide variety of sources. You should assess what sources you are going to need in doing your research.
Here are secondary sources you can use in researching:
1. Newspaper – it is a source of several kinds of current information. It’s a printed media that is usually
distributed weekly in the form of folded compilation of papers. It contains written information about
current events that are printed in blank ink with white or gray background.
Parts of a Newspaper
 News page – if you scan through the pages of a newspaper, you will notice that current news
occupy the first few pages. The most vital news appear on the front page and contain large and
bold headline.
 Editorial page – this section expresses opinion of the editor and the publisher on certain issues or
events. This section contains articles called editorials.
 Sports page – this section contains news on events about sports from inside and outside of the
country.
 Entertainment or lifestyle page – this section covers interviews of popular people, interesting
people and people who make a difference in their communities. It is also about television
programs, news about movies, stage plays, cartoons, comics, daily horoscope, health, beauty, and
other activities for entertainment.
 Classified Ads – this section gives information about new jobs, business updates, and house for
sale and events for different occasions. Contains advertisements that fall under the categories like
“Help”, “Wanted”, “For Lease / For Sale”, and “Wanted To Buy”.
 Obituary page - lists people who recently died and the time and place of their burials.

2. Website – a collection of publicly accessible interlinked webpages that share a single domain name e.g.,
.edu, .gov, .org, .com, .info, .ph. Websites come in wide variety including educational sites, news sites,
blogs, social media/networking sites, portals, review websites, etc. Each website has a search engine that
allows you to search the topic you need.
3. Videos – there are many videos that can also be used as interesting source of information. There are
videotapes, filmstrips, and documentary films. YouTube, TED-Ed, and Khan Academy are examples of
online video sharing sites.
4. Images – images convey informational visual form. It can be
effective in a way of presenting abstract concepts or groups of data.
Some images that can help you are illustrations, maps, graphs,
charts, diagrams, and posters.
5. Podcast – it is a form of audio broadcasting made available on the
Internet for downloading to a computer or a mobile device. Most
podcast are themed around one particular topic such as movies,
music, books and sports.
6. Print-based materials – all publication printed on paper.

Examples of Print-Based Materials


 Textbook – is a standard source of information for formal
study of a subject or an instrument for teaching and learning

which presents the subject matter depending on the design or focus of the curriculum. Textbook
are collections of study and reading material relate to a specific discipline or course.
 Dictionary – it contains alphabetically ordered words with explanations of their meaning often
with information about spelling, syllabication, pronunciation, part of speech, and origin of
words.
 Thesaurus – comprises synonyms and antonyms of words.
 Encyclopedia – covers knowledge or branches of knowledge on a comprehensive but
summarized fashion. It is useful for providing facts and giving a broad survey of a topic. It is
written by specialist and also arranged in alphabetical order.
 Atlas – a book of maps and geographical information about cities and countries in the world. It
also includes facts about population, industries, climates, exports and imports, industry,
agriculture and natural resources.
 Almanac – is a yearly publication that gives up-to-date information
bout many subject. It contains social, political, and commercial statistics, sports record, recent
laws, history, weather, the arts and literature.
