Our History

HVS Engineering Pte Ltd was incorporated on Year 2005 for the sole purpose of developing, manufacturing and marke ng of a
novel cleaning inven on conceived by its founders of 3 Engineers. It obtained the status of SEEDS Enterprise (administered by EDB
-Economic Development Board) in Oct 2005. Currently, HVS is known as A SPRING SEEDS Investee Company of Spring Singapore.

HVS Engineering Pte Ltd is a pioneer company working on Automa c Online Tube Cleansing System with spiky balls of varying
densi es to ensure ALL tubes are being cleansed. The cleaning principle behind the patented HVS ATC System is to create Dynamic
Zig-Zag Mechanical Cleaning Process through specially designed off-centered spiky balls to clean grooves of heat exchanger tubes
by capitalizing on the force of moving water though the tubes.

In 2013, HVS Engineering Pte Ltd has developed a chemical-free water treatment system with A-Star IMRE and has been accorded
by Singapore Green Building Council with SGBC 4 cks in 2019 under the category Cooling Tower Water Treatment—Physical De-
vices (HVS-ECA System – Chemical-Free Water Treatment)

In 2016, HVS Engineering Pte Ltd has embarked on the development of a rapid Total Bacteria Quan fica on Protocol with A-Star
IMRE. Extensive lab-based op miza on and site valida on on the bacterial load in cooling tower waters has been conducted over
the past years. Currently, HVS is using this rapid detec on protocol as a tool to monitor the trend of the bacterial load over me
and be used as early warning signal should there be a sudden upsurge of bacteria infesta on.

Our Solu on
HVS Engineering provides cost-effec ve enrgy and water-savig solu ons for heat exchanger system. We offer an improved auto-
mated method of cleaning and maintaining fluid-cooled tubes and shell heat exchanger systems which u lizes design-specific resili-
ent brush balls circula ng within part of the heat exchange system to clean foulings at the ini al stage of forma on. It is able to
con nuously circulate the brush balls through the tubes as compared to the intermi ent cleaning sequence of the old system. This
is to ensure fouling would not have any chance to occur.

These specially designed brush balls can also reach and clean the grooves of the tube which are inaccessible to larger sponge balls.
HVS Brush Balls’ unique property results in more effec ve cleaning and is reflected in the savings of at least 10 to 18% in electricity
bills.
In addi onal, HVS is able to offer a total package for chemical-free water treatment system for both the open loop (condenser
cooling tower water) and the closed loop (chilled water system) - to manage the water quality working in conjunc on with accred-
ited laboratories and using HVS proprietory rapid total bacterial detec on and quan fica on system to monitor the bacterial trend
over me.

Our Niche
HVS succeeded in making a breakthrough which resulted in a paradigm shi in the cleaning process using our unique revolu onary

THE PROBLEM IN HEAT EXCHANGE SYSTEM

From field experience, despite implementa on of comprehensive maintenance program incorpora ng the best
chemical and biocide treatment, best filtra on system, and the most well-maintained opera ng condi ons, foul-
ing and scaling will s ll occur over the inner surface of heat exchange tubes.

The standard chemical cleaning techniques so commonly and widely used are not exact science but a specialised
art and should be undertaken only under the guidance of a Water Treatment Specialist. Even then, the Water
Treatment Specialist will never be able to guarantee a foul-free, corrosion-free and maintenance-free heat ex-
change system and its related equipment.

The problem we’re facing right now is that we’re always playing catch-up with the systems’ chemistry. We can
never get the chemistry right and keep it right –all the me! The water quality and condi on, and its cons tuents
are always in a state of flux. The constant change in pH level, the concentra on of total dissolve solids, the ran-
dom introduc on of airborne and waterborne microorganisms that are responsible for MIC, the introduc on of
suspended solids from external source, the suspended par culates as a result of dislodgement of corrosion prod-
ucts will invariably pose a formidable challenge to maintain the heat exchange tubes free from fouling and scal-
ing.

Biological fouling (due to biofilm & slime), precipita on fouling (due to crystalliza on), par culate fouling (due to
sedimenta on of suspended solids) and corrosion fouling (due to concentra on cell and oxida on cell type and
galvanic corrosion) in heat exchanger tubes are constant problem maintenance, industrial and process engineers
are faced with for decades…even RIGHT NOW!

Heat exchange tubes must be kept clean at all mes to prevent compromising on the heat exchange performance
and to prevent corrosive ac vi es.

It is on this very basis of overcoming and resolving such extensive fouling problems that have inspired the devel-
opment of an on-line automa c cleaning system - the HydroAc ve VeloBall Automa c Cleaning System (HVS ATC
Systems) for heat exchange tubes.

In addressing such extensive fouling problems, HydroAc ve VeloBall Interna onal has successfully developed a
fully computerized automa c con nuous on-line tube cleaning and monitoring system for fluid-cooled heat ex-
changer and condenser systems. Through extensive research and development and sound engineering design,
the HydroAc ve VeloBall Automa c Cleaning System can yield significant reduc on in energy usage by central-
ized air-condi oning and heat exchange systems, based on defined energy milestones.

The revolu onary HydroAc ve VeloBall Automa c Cleaning System not only eliminates air-condi oning equip-
ment down me, but also op mizes energy consump on of air-condi oning equipment by automa cally keeping
the heat exchanger tubes consistently free from fouling and scale deposits. Extensive tes ng revealed that chill-
ers in central air-condi oning sta ons equipped with the HydroAc ve VeloBall Automa c Cleaning System oper-
ates at more efficient levels and can con nuously operate trouble-free.

FOULINGS IN HEAT EXCHANGER IS INEVITABLE

The rela vely thin and thermally conduc ve walls – both characteris cs selected primarily for heat transfer effi-
ciency – of the tube bundles within the Tube-and-Shell Heat Exchanger are cri cal components to be kept free
from fouling as these tubes are the center of the heat removal system. The thin tube wall is also most vulnerable
to puncture failure due to corrosion a acks. Hence by maintaining the tube wall to be foul-free will prevent bio-
corrosion and under-deposit corrosion.

The accumula on of fouling materials over the inner diameter of such tubes will lead to a degrada on of heat
transfer and will affect the reliability and efficiency of the overall system performance of the heat exchanger. The
secondary effect of foulings is the corrosion process that follows.

The extent of foulings at different stages of forma on, and the different types of foulings are illustrated as fol-
lows:

Choking of condenser tubes will reduce the heat transfer efficiency and increase the head pressure of the pump
leading to higher energy cost.
The plugging up of the heat exchange tubes are due to a combina on of biological fouling leading to MIC corro-
sion and the accumula on of corrosion products like iron oxides and micro-organisms’ slime.
Any types of fouling would eventually lead to the ini a on of corrosion process. Once corrosion begins, the met-
al surface will form corrosion products i.e., iron oxide flakes and oxide par cles, adding suspended solids to the
condenser circula ng water stream.
The suspended corrosion products could cause further abrasive damage to the tube surface due to the force of
moving water.

BIOFILM FOULINGS & MIC COST INDUSTRIES BILLIONS ANNUALLY

Bio-foulings and Microbiological Induced Corrosion (MIC) are common problems found in many commercial
and industrial proper es simply due to the fact that microbiological communi es are such common inhabit-
ants in our environment. Bio-foulings and MIC are most commonly found in open condenser water and pro-
cess cooling loops because of favourable environment condi ons normally encountered. An open loop con-
denser water system offers abundant nutrients, oxygen and sunlight that promote the growth of microorgan-
isms that can o en lead to MIC contamina on.

For open systems, the main entry point of factors influencing MIC is via the cooling tower whereby microor-
ganism, nutrients, dirt, suspended solids, leaves, pollens, debris, etc gain access into the heart of the heat ex-
changer.

MIC-based corrosion is extremely aggressive and difficult to eliminate. MIC can a ack any piping system given
the proper condi ons to flourish.

The extent of bio-foulings are illustrated as follows:

The build-up of fouling materials at inlets of the condenser tubes, if not constantly and consistently removed,
will progressively increase head pressure and eventually lead to plugged tubes.

The increase head pressure and the plugging up of the heat exchanger tubes will lead to higher energy con-
sump on and higher maintenance costs.

Biological fouling costs industry billions. Biofilm consists of microbial cells (primarily algae or bacterial) and
they produce a gooey by-products known as ‘slime’ as shown here.

The volume of the slime produced can exceed the mass of the bacterial cells by a factor of 100 or more which
can impede flow and dras cally reduce the heat transfer efficiency and increase the head pressure of the
pump leading to higher energy cost. Such extreme slime produc on can choke and plug up the tubes – as
shown in this case. The con nuous accumula on of fouling materials over the internal surface of the conden-
ser tubes will degrade the heat transfer ability, promote MIC and under-deposit corrosions, and eventually
cause flow rate problems. Such interior deposits provide a achment points for microbes and nutrients, and
encourage the growth and spread of microbiological communi es leading to severe corrosion problems.

HVS ATC SYSTEM: THE WORKING PRINCIPLE

Driven by the inherent cooling water flow through the heat exchanger, the mechanical movements of appropri-
ately propor oned, sized and weighted HVS Brush Balls® bounce and rotate with high velocity, constantly scrub-
bing and removing the dirt and scales in the heat exchanger tubes.

The foulants in the tubes are then brushed and flushed out by these balls as they dynamically scrub and work
their way along the tubes. Due to the removal being a physical and mechanical process and HVS Brush Balls be-
ing smaller than the internal diameter of tubes, it is not subject to any pressure loss across heat exchanger, the
variability of fluid chemistry and flow velocity. Hence, this method of cleaning is robust and highly reliable which
can cater for par culate, chemical deposi on, biological foulings all at once.

HVS Automatic Brush Ball Tube Cleaning

1.0 mm thick of slime fouling will cause 30% more energy to

be consumed as compared to clean tubes. The slime acts as
insulation – reducing heat transfer efficiency

HVS ATC SYSTEM: THE BENEFITS

HVS ATC System prevents dirt accumula on on heat transfer tube surface. Once the HVS Brush Balls enter the
tubes, they move along under the mo ve force of water without the need for addi onal energy input or pump-
ing force. HVS ATC System is designed to maintain con nuous circula on of HVS Brush Balls to ensure that the
internal surfaces of tubes are constantly and consistently cleansed. The benefits of HVS ATC Systems have been
extensively documented and verified to save energy in the magnitude of 5%-30%. HVS ATC System provides an
effec ve “green” method of elimina ng microfouling and macrofouling problem, thus elimina ng significant en-
ergy and water wastage, reducing environmental impact & decreasing greenhouse gas emissions.

HVS ATC System is suitably design to retrofit on exis ng equipment and immediately can improve efficiency and
extend their opera onal life span. HVS ATC Systems have been proven to mi gate macrofouling manifested in
seawater-based industrial heat exchangers use in Oil & Gas sector, Petrochemical Plants and Marine & Shipping
industry.
