The Sandwich

John Montagu was a British politician. He was the first lord of the Admiralty. He
was born in London on 13 November 1718.
Montagu was a very conversant gambler. He used to play the cards. One day He
did not go home or to the restaurant to have lunch. He stayed on the gaming table for 24 hours.
At 4:00 p. m he asked his servants to bring him slices of meat between two slices of bread. On
that day in 1765 John Montagu invented the sandwich. He did not quit the table. He liked
playing cards and eating at the same time.
James Cook the British explorer named the Sandwich Islands (later Hawaii) after
John Montagu the Earl of Sandwich in 1778. John Montagu died at the age of 74years old.
