In this image, it shows main character Edward standing in his front garden.

He is positioned in
the centre of the full shot, displaying the entire setting - his chilling mansion, symbolically cut
hedges, and bright flower beds contrasting the dark night sky. The lighting is positioned up high
from a variety of places, but it mainly projects from behind, casting brightness on the finely cut
hedges as well as Edward. The garden is home to a main feature, the hedges, which are
symbolic; for example the hand, which could represent many things such as Edwards lack of
normal human hands, or the hand of Peg reaching out to help him in the beginning of the movie.
The colours and setting also have some sort of meaning - Edward’s colourful garden doesn’t
match the aesthetic of his eerie mansion at all, however it might be seen as how his life was
while living in Lutz. While he was given the gift of a loving family and ‘welcoming’ friends (the
bright flowers), in reality he was always going to be the odd one out (the dark mansion in the
background). Edward’s upset and confused facial expression could be as a result of multiple
events, such as feeling alone, being the odd one out in a world of symmetry, or losing the girl he
loved (and probably unintentionally killing the other guy who also loved her in the process). This
theme of guilt, sadness, or confusion is also conveyed through the time of day - night. This is
because usually we associate dark, melancholy scenes with night time rather than broad
daylight as the colouring of the sky can help create a more emotional effect for some viewers.
