The Farmer`s Lover

#122

At Bafenyi`s Uncle`s…

Bafenyi`s uncle quietly listened as he spoke until

he was done…he could feel the pain in his voice
and for a moment he wasn’t sure how to respond,
the young man had a point.

Bafenyi: (sighed) …and I feel like the whole family

failed me, no one is doing anything to help me
keep my family together. I don’t know if its
because my father is late kana jang…the only
time im getting calls is if someone needs money
or my connections to get them or their children
jobs, its never about the problems im going
through or simple how are you doing.
Uncle: ke a utwa motogolo, you have a point, the
problem with us people who have no money we
always assume that people who have money cant
be stressed, we assume you are happy because
lack of money is what depresses us, which is
ignorant…and family dynamics have changed but
I think the way young people handle things
nowadays is different, your wife has filed for
divorce and she doesn't want to attend a meeting.
We didn’t do enough yes but we tried to get a
family meeting so we talk to both of you, but she
said she was still in school.
Bafenyi: but you haven't put enough pressure on
her parents so they make sure she comes for the
meeting.
Uncle: what you need to understand is that, when
a woman has made up her mind, not even a group
of adults can change her mind, especially the
types of women you guys marry who have money
and businesses, they don’t listen because you
being angry makes no difference in her life. When
is the final day?
Bafenyi: we are going to court tomorrow, she will
arrive today so if you talk to her family then we
can talk her out of it before the court tomorrow.
Uncle: cant you accept her decision? Because I
don’t see her agreeing
Bafenyi: I made one mistake!
Uncle: and she cant handle it, she has said she
cant forgive you. Don’t force love, you had
Blessing and she died, you had her and made one
mistake so get another one, life moves on. There
are so many women and I don’t doubt that you
will struggle, you are a Marumo. That alone is a
privilege, you can even go to your rich uncles for
advice, maybe I take things simple because I live
an average lifestyle. Kuku ke kuku motogolo…

Bafenyi looked down and laughed…

Uncle: don’t be too desperate for a woman whom

you have begged and done everything you can to
show you are sorry. Accept her decision, respect
her and move on!

Bafenyi nodded looking down as his uncle talked

to him…

At the farm…

Jessica parked in front of the storage room, the

caretaker and two other workers opened the
tailgate and took out the pig feeds, Jessica
stepped out of the car breathing heavily with her
big bump, she took off her shoes and sighed in
relief looking at her now swollen legs. She walked
towards the tree and sat on the ground watching
as they offloaded. She took out her phone and
dialed Ethan.

Ethan: Hi
Jessica: Hi, I`m at the farm but I just remembered
that I have a checkup this afternoon, I was
thinking we should go together, I will also be
going for the ultrasound to get the gender of the
baby.
Ethan: Um, I will see if I will make it. I have a lot to
do at the office.
Jessica: Oh ok
Ethan: Do you know if a DNA test can be done
while you are still pregnant? Or must we wait for
the baby to be born to know if its mine for sure

She paused for a second and sighed running her

finger over the sand…

Jessica: its easier to wait for the baby to be born

because when you are pregnant it’s a long-
complicated process if its possible because I`m
not really sure.
Ethan: Ok. Let me do something here, will talk to
you later
Jessica: so you want a DNA test?
Ethan: I mean, you were sleeping with Bafenyi
Jessica: It happened once and we used
protection. It's yours
Ethan: I don’t know that.
Jessica: OK
Ethan: Drive safely, see you later
Jessica: Bye

She hung up and sighed, the guys finished

offloading and she walked to the car where she
got in and chatted with them for a while before
driving back to Maun.

At the mall..

Hours later she walked in the baby shop and

picked a few things with neutral colors then she
paid and headed to the parking lot where she put
everything in the back. She got in the car and
drove out as her helper called.

Jessica: hello
Her: when did you say is your due date? I was
talking to my boyfriend telling him I will be a stay
in the first 2 months of your delivery go go baya
botsetsi. I wanted to know if im moving in on your
9th month or after you deliver
Jessica: after I have delivered. don’t risk losing
your relationship for money mma.
Her: he is fine with it, he knows we need the
money, we just wanted to know exactly when
Jessica: oh ok
Her: your food is ready.
Jessica: thank you, im coming
Her: bye

She hung up and started the car as Bafenyi pulled

over next to her, she looked down pulling her seat
belt like she didn’t see him.

Meanwhile Bafenyi stepped out and his eyes

landed on her big bump, a cold chill ran down his
spine…he had never been so grateful for the use
of a condom, this looked roughly 6 months and
surely if he hadn't wrapped it up he would be in
another DNA limbo or fighting STI`s. From the
look on her face things didn’t seem ok, or maybe
he was just over thinking, people do change when
they are pregnant.

Bafenyi: Hi
Jessica: (reversing) Hi

She turned the car and drove off as he walked in

the shop. Minutes later she slowed at the traffic
lights, while waiting here she found herself
wondering about Ethy, she had not seen him in
over 6 months, part of her wanted to give Mumsy,
maybe this time one of them would pick, but then
no, she had called enough.

Minutes later she parked the car next to the house

and sighed exhausted, she took out her phone and
dialed Mumsy, but there was still no answer. She
tapped on her bank app and processed the 2.5K
monthly payment then She reluctantly stared at
Thuto`s number for a full minute before finally
calling him.

Thuto: hello
Jessica: Hi, I sent Ethan`s contribution. I wasn’t
sure where to send screenshot because Mumsy
never opens my messages.
Thuto: Ok. Shap
Jessica: I was wondering if I can have Ethan this
weekend, I will return him on Sunday.
Thuto: We are going somewhere as a family.
Jessica: when can I see him?
Thuto: I will call you back
Jessica: you wont, that’s what you always say if
you pick my calls, from here you wont be picking
my calls. Can I please see Ethan, its been 6
months and I am pregnant, it’s a complicated
pregnancy and I don’t want to stress. I just want
to tell him he is going to be a big brother.
Thuto: Ethan is already a big brother; he has more
siblings than he can count.
Jessica: should I go to court to see my son?
Thuto: Mxm!

He cut the call and she leaned back, she got out of
the car and carried a few things inside, she walked
in the children`s room and smiled looking at
Ethan`s bed…she placed the bathe set in the baby
cot then she headed to her room where she sat on
the bed and took out the baby`s clothes. She
smiled at the clothes and hugged them then she
packed them into a bag and zipped it before
heading to the kitchen.

At the hospital…

In the afternoon Jessica drove into the hospital

parking lot and leaned back dialing a number of a
lawyer from a business card she was holding.

Voice: Nonsy and Attorneys, good day

Jessica: Hi, I would like to make an appointment
with a lawyer, I need a shared custody.
Voice: (typed in the background) Do you have a
file with us?
Jessica: No, but I need help.
Voice: do you have a specific lawyer you need?
Jessica: any lawyer is ok. I just want to share my
son equally with the father. Im also on parole so I
do-
Voice: ok maam, lets save the private information
for consultation. (chuckled) ke ago
kgabetsa…(Jessica chuckled) Is 3pm ok toda?
Jessica: (smiled) yes, thank you
Voice: may I have your names?

She gave out her information and hung up then

she dialed Ethan, his car drove past her, and she
hung up then she stepped out and closed the
door.

Ethan got out and locked the car then they met at
the door and walked in.

Ethan: Hi
Jessica: Hi…

The front desk was assisting another patient, so

they took a seat…

Ethan: There is something I have to tell you…

She turned her head and looked at him, Ethan`s

throat dried as he looked in her eyes, he had been
planning to say this for months now and there
was never really a good time, but being in the
hospital felt so much better in case anything
happens.

Jessica: whats going on?

Ethan: I'm getting married.

Jessica leaned back and put her foot over the

other as she gently rubbed her bump…

Jessica: (calmly) Congratulations

Ethan: “congratulations?”
Jessica: what did you expect? You want me to
throw tantrums, run after you and rape you? I
don’t do that anymore…I have been dumped way
too many times I sensed this the minute you
started cooking for your helper. I knew you were
up to something; I just gave you the benefit of the
doubt. Gape I knew it was not going to work
between us because you never had the courage to
have sex with me after finding out about Bafenyi.
(the other patient finished, and she stood up) lets
go…

He watched her walking to the front desk and talk

to the lady then he stood up and followed her to
the doctor`s office...
