Introduction

Background to the Study

The proliferation of fast-food chains in Duncan Village facilitates food access but undermines

healthy eating habits, particularly among children. This study focuses on childhood obesity's

impact, considering diet and physical activity levels. Mitigation measures are explored to sustain

overall population health.

Problem Statement

To investigate the impact of childhood obesity on the residents of Duncan Village, San Fernando

attributed to dietary customs and levels of physical activity during the periods 2022-2023.

Statement of Problem

While childhood obesity is widespread in Trinidad and Tobago, this study zeroes in on Duncan

Village. Variables include obesity as the dependent variable and dietary practices and physical

activity as independent variables. The study aims to merge childhood obesity with diet and

activity in this population.


Purpose of the Study

This study, initiated by our group, stems from personal connections to individuals susceptible to

poor dietary and activity habits. Our primary aim is to stress the importance of balanced diets,

aiming to raise awareness among youth regarding nutritional choices for both present and future

well-being.

Research Questions

1. What are some of the factors that inevitably led to the incline of obesity rates

contemporarily?

2. Have personal choices of individuals led to health compromises or has it exacerbated the

situation?

3. What are some of the measures taken by individuals and governing bodies to mitigate the

rate of obesity?

Educational Value of the Research

Residents of Duncan Village stand to gain insight into dietary decisions and potential solutions.

Moreover, the Ministry of Health could use the findings to regulate fast-food outlets and promote

diet awareness, benefiting community health and awareness regarding the importance of

maintaining a healthy diet.


Definition of Technical Terms

Non-Communicable Diseases – “Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), also known as chronic

diseases, are not passed from person to person”. (World Health Organisation, 2023)

Balanced Diet- “A diet that provides all the essential nutrients in sufficient quantity and in the

correct proportions to promote good health”. (Oxford, 2023)
