Topic - Comparison of land area alloted for
various purposes in Odisha and Maharashtra
Odisha is a state located on the east coast of our country covering an area of about 1.5 lakh square kilometre, which constitutes 4.7 % of the total
geographical area of India. It is mainly known for it’s vast variations in land and it’s involvement in agriculture. Whereas, Maharashtra, situated in the
western peninsular region of the country has a geographical area of 3,07,713 sq km, which is 9.36% of the total geographical area of the country. is one
the most developed states of India and has been known for it’s tourist places and vast development in agriculture over the years. These two states will be
compared on the basis of their land allotment in agriculture, forests, industries and hills.
Agriculture -
Odisha is an agrarian state with Agriculture and Animal Husbandry sector contributing to 21.11% of the Net State Domestic Product
(NSDP) in 2007- 08. The state has cultivated an area of about 61.80 lakh hectares out of which 29.14 lakh hectare is high land, 17.55 lakh hectare medium land
and 15.11 lakh hectare low land.

Maharashtra is a leading state in agriculture. It has a total geographical area of about 3 crore hectares with land
cultivated of about 2 crore hectares, which is around 70 % of the total land area.

Forest -
Almost one-third of Odisha is covered by forests which make up about 37.34% of the total land area of the state. These
forests cover most of southern and western Odisha. The forest cover of Odisha extends over an area of 58,136.869 square
kilometres out of which reserve forests make up an area of 26,329.12 square kilometres, demarcated protected forests
make up 11,687.079 square kilometres and vast protected forests make up 3,638.78 square kilometres. Other types of
forests make up 16,261.34 square kilometres while unorganised forests make up 20.55 square kilometres of the total forest
cover. The Reserved Forests area including proposed reserves, protected and unorganised including private forests is
58.90%, 40.75% and 0.35% respectively of the recorded forest area.

Maharashtra, the third largest State in the country is ranked second among the States in terms of the recorded forest area.
Western Ghats of the State have very rich biodiversity. Recorded Forest Area (RFA) in the State is 61,579 sq km of which
49,546 sq Km is reserved Forests, 6,733 sq km is protected Forest and 5,300 sq km is unclassed Forests. In Maharashtra,
during the period 1st January 2015 to 5th February 2019, a total of 3797.16 hectares of forestland was diverted for non-
forestry purposes under the Forest Conservation Act, 1980 (MoEF & CC, 2019). As per the information received from the
SFD, a total area of 1,47,814 ha has been notified as reserved forests during 2014 to 2019.
Industries -
Odisha’s industries are based mainly on the natural resources available in the state. It carries more than 35% of
country’s natural resources. The state has significant reserves of iron ore, bauxite, nickel, coal, etc. Jharsuguda is
one of the most industry occupied states in Odisha. Odisha government has identified about 2 lakh acres of
contiguous land that will facilitate industries to set up their projects without any land acquisition hurdles.

Manufacturing, mass media, international trade, petroleum, tourism, fashion, apparel, and aerospace are the
major industries in Maharashtra. According to current economic indicators, it is one of the wealthiest states in
India. The total area under industrial use is approximately 4 lakh acres.

Hills -
Odisha has various hills and mountain ranges. Some part of the eastern ghats, along with their highest peak,
Mahendragiri, are also located in Odisha. Mountains cover an area of about 52,000 square kilometre in Odisha.

Maharashtra also has vast variations in it’s hills and mountain ranges. A major amount of the western ghats are
located in Maharashtra. Hills cover an area of 61,000 square kilometre (approx.).
