EXPERIMENT 3:

Aim: Connect Computers using given topology with wired media

Apparatus: Switch/hub, RJ-45 connector, Twisted Pair cable, LAN tester, crimping tools.

Introduction: A star topology is a topology for a Local Area Network (LAN) in which all
nodes are individually connected to a central connection point, like a hub or a switch. A star
takes more cable than e.g. a bus, but the benefit is that if a cable fails, only one node will be
brought down.

Architecture:

Advantages:

1. Centralized management of the network, through the use of the central computer, hub,
or switch.
2. Easy to add another computer to the network.
3. If one computer on the network fails, the rest of the network continues to function
normally.
4. High performance as no data collisions can occur.

Disadvantages:

1. Requires more cable length than a linear topology.

2. More expensive than linear bus topologies because of the cost of the hubs, etc.
3. May have a higher cost to implement, especially when using a switch or router as the
central network device.
4. The central network device determines the performance and number of nodes the
network can handle.
5. If the central computer, hub, or switch fails, the entire network goes down and all
computers are disconnected from the network.
Procedure:

1. Power up the switch. Connect all the computers to the switch with standard network cable
(CAT-5).

2. Insert a one end of cable into NIC port of computer and another end into NIC port of
switch.
3. Put all the computers in the same workgroup.

4. Give all the computers IP address in the same subnet mask.

5. Use the following guidelines:

 Right click “Local Area Connection”.

 This connection uses the following items select “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” and
clicks the “properties” button.
 Put a tick next to “use the following IP address and type in the IP and subnet mask.
6. Type ping command on command prompt of every computer to verify connections.

Result: In this way we connected Computers using given topology with wired media

Conclusion: It is easy to connect Computers using given topology with wired media
